Write Around Portland

Write Around Portland does amazing things.
I found them while looking for local champions of media literacy, and as champions go, these guys are tops.
They bring the joy of creative expression to populations who don’t always have the luxury of time or access to guidance, support and materials. They put on free writing workshops, providing journals, pens, transportation and childcare for members of a variety of groups, reaching out to veterans, recovering addicts, homeless populations, people in prison, and others facing social or physical barriers to larger communities.
They produce and sell seasonal anthologies showcasing the talents of the communities they service, and in doing so compile a revealing cross-​section of our city.
I’ve volunteered and attended one of their anthology readings (the place was packed to the gills), and coming from the perspective of a volunteer, I can attest not only to the admirable efficiency of the organization, but to the genuine service it provides both to our community and the individuals within it.
