Xtend Barre Portland

I started going to Xtend Barre in January 2014 and I am completely hooked! The exercises are the perfect balance of cardio, toning and lengthening. It helped me train for the Boston Marathon, and now it is helping me stay fit throughout my pregnancy (7 months and counting). Jessica and all the girls are genuine and inspiring. The community they have shaped is welcoming and uplifting. I feel balanced and confident when I walk out of the studio after a class.

I LOVE Xtend Barre Portland. I’ve been taking classes here for 9 months now and I’m so addicted that I now go 4 times a week! I regularly attend the standard barre class as well as stick, which is a really fun challenge. My regular classes are usually with Jessica, Lindsay, and Natalie – I adore them all! The classes are challenging but really fun! Having moved to Portland a year and a half ago, I didn’t really feel like this was home and I was desperately seeking a «community.» Xtend Barre PDX has become that for me. I walk in the door and am so excited to visit with all my new friends and it’s been so nice to feel at home in this city! I feel the best I’ve ever felt, I’m sleeping better, and I’ve been able to reduce my anxiety through regular exercise here! My partner and I are looking for houses right now and what’s the first thing we look for? Proximity to Xtend Barre on Division!

I love Xtend Barre! After too many cross fit injuries, I started here about a year ago. It’s been a great work out to support my needs. It got me in great shape for my wedding this summer, and now it’s supporting me in a pregnancy. I have no doubt that this work-​out will get me back in shape after I have the baby. All of the instructors are fun, attentive and motivating! They are well trained, and each class is different. The variety is great! Jessica and the staff have put a lot of energy into creating a community around the studio, and I’ve felt very welcome since day 1. Each time I go, I’m welcomed with a warm smile. I love this studio!

LOVE Xtend Barre PDX!!! Jessica is a fantastic owner/​instructor and all of the other instructors are fantastic as well. I love the variety of classes that are offered and how each instructor infuses the classes with their individual styles. Bending a dancer, I also love that it is so dance based. Amazing studio and I’m super grateful to be able to take class there.

I started at Xtend Barre Portland in early July, and I can honestly say that this workout has given me faster results than any other type of workout that I have done. These classes have everything you need to get your warm up, strength, cardio, stretching, a complete workout. Every class ends with me dripping in sweat and feeling like I have just had the best workout ever. I love all of the instructors, they each bring something different to the workout and have a great way of positively encouraging you through class. I pay for the unlimited class pass each month so I can workout as often as possible, and the classes that they offer work great with my schedule. They recently added a 4:30 class on Tue & Thur, which means I can work out two more times a week.
Who knew that you could go from feeling like a marshmallow to feeling strong and healthy in just 60 days! I am now more motivated to get even stronger as my clothes fit better and I can see lean muscle building on my body.
I am so happy that I found Xtend Barre, I only wish that I had discovered it sooner!

I signed up via ClassPass and was warmly welcomed when I walked in. Jessica, the instructor and owner, asked me about my experience/​comfort level and gave me a rundown of the style of class so I knew what to expect. Throughout class I got hands-​on feedback which was helpful and not overbearing. The mood during class was super positive and group-​oriented with peppy music and enough time for short water breaks. It was the perfect amount of cardio and sculpting/​strength exercises. You definitely sweat in this class! Afterwards, Jessica made sure to check in with me and see how my experience was. She was open to questions and very positive. Overall, if you like a little cardio added to classic barre this should be your studio!

Love this place! Just passing through on the way to visit family and had to get my workout in. Jessica is so welcoming and I would definitely recommend her barre class, although all of the instructors seem to be good. I like that they have a variety of classes. I stopped by on a Tuesday and they had a TRX, barre or running /​barre fusion class offered at different times. Good retail selection also. If you want to try it out they have a buy one get one free option.

Jessica was a nurturing, helpful and inspiring trainer. Even though she kicked my ass during every second of the workout, I CANNOT WAIT to come back for my next TRX training session with her.

I have had such a wonderful time taking classes here. Jessica and her instructors are well trained, compassionate and willing to help me modify classes. As someone with a chronic illness, continuing to exercise is very difficult but Tessa’s Pilates class has been wonderful and when I feel up to it, barre classes are great. Lots of variety and more dance than some other places in town.

I just did a class at xtend barre and it was great!
I have over 18 ish years of experience with ballet, yoga and Pilates and have been taking barre classes for over a year now.
This class was good-​adequately paced, good warm up, hard workout and lot of stretching.
I felt as though the moves even for someone who hadn’t had ballet experience were easy to understand and execute and got the job done.
I felt like my whole body was sufficiently worked out and I got really sweaty.
Good to note that this barre method is far more ballet based and does incorporate some jumping/​higher impact exercises !

Wow! This place is amazing! Everyone is so nice, and the workouts are both challenging and fun! Love this place!

I have been taking classes at Xtend Barre for just over a year, and I enjoy it so much that I recently cancelled my other gym membership in light of taking more frequent classes there. It is a relatively small studio, which I like because it offers me the opportunity to get to know the other clients as well as the staff. The studio offers a variety of classes beyond the basic Barre class, such as TRX, (a class performed by gripping webbing suspended from the ceiling!) Stick, (which is a class utilizing a dynamic rope with a stick in place of a barre,) Pilates, and private lessons. As if that wasn’t enough variety, each instructor offers a slightly different style while maintaining the Xtend Barre repertoire to ensure safety. I have seen two major areas of my life that have benefitted from these classes: physical and emotional.
Physical benefits: Xtend Barre might sound at first like just another barre workout, but it differs in a few ways from a more traditional barre routine. Xtend has a cardio element that helps the calories drop off even as we sweat to upbeat music and tone our muscles. In the one year that I have been taking classes, I have dropped 3% BMI, which for someone genetically predisposed to diabetes, is extremely good news. I walk taller, have more confidence, and am strong enough to help with home remodeling projects that my husband is always starting.
Emotional Benefits: It is common to deal with bouts of depression, but joining a studio with women of all ages, all walks of life, all beliefs, all backgrounds, all futures, and everything in between has helped me gain a healthier perspective on life than I had before. Xtend Barre Portland feels like a safe space to me; a space where I can try new things, a space where I can live fully in the moment for the hour I am in class with no worries, no plans, no pressure, and no responsibilities weighing me down. This is a place where I am safe to be me, safe to work out my stressors, safe to rejoice, safe to be vulnerable. I have seen women of all walks of life, and that spectrum helps me see that regardless of how things turn out, regardless of my dreams ever come true, I can still have power, hope, courage, strength, wisdom, and friendships. I don’t know of another place that can truly offer those things all while pushing us to be the healthiest version of ourselves we can be.
All in all, I think that a lot of life is what you put in to it. Xtend Barre Portland has helped me to find more inside of me to give to living life to the fullest.

Jessica (the owner/​an instructor) will do anything she can to help you achieve your fitness goals. She is more than accommodating with her class package prices and specials that occur along the way. All the instructors are well taught and teach even better! I am so glad I am able to attend each and every class I can at Xtend Barre Portland.

I thought I’d go ahead and emphasize how amazing Jessica, the owner, is. I have had so many ups and downs since I started Xtend Barre, and Jessica has been nothing but accomodating. Today in fact it was one of THOSE days. I made plans to get back on the boat and start up Xtend, and instead left my gym bag at home! I tried to cancel within the 4 hour window and was 5 minutes late. Jessica forgave me and didn’t charge me for the class. This is the kind of service you just don’t see anymore. Everyone needs a break sometimes and Jessica never makes me feel bad about it!

I have always struggled with working out. Finding something that works, keeps me motivated and I can stick with has been a struggle my whole life.
Enter: Xtend Barre Portland.
I tried it on a whim, decided I wanted to make a change and I’d heard about barre and so many people raving about it. So I tried it. And I have been so in love with the workouts (because this studio has a comprehensive series of workouts someone never bored), the people, the sense of community and the feeling I get every time I come to class. I am a frequent Xtender (3 – 5 time a week) and I am amazed at the difference I see and feel every single day. Jessica is the fabulous owner and teaches incredible classes. From xtend barre to xtend barre stick to TRX literally ALL of my fitness needs are met. I feel amazing, I see progress, I have fun and I never plan on joining another studio. Why mess with perfection?

Traveling through the area and was in Portland for a week. Love the variety of classes they offer here. I have been to many barre studios in the area and none offer the TRX, Pilates stick, Pilates flow and Circuit 7. Love the new Circuit 7 class… very different from barre, but totally makes my heart rate go up and I sweat a ton! So, while I love barre, I love the variety too. Definitely will be back to this studio next time I am in town.
Jessica the owner is super nice and I was glad to meet her. She has such a love for her clients and I could see it even though I am not a regular there.
As expected, you need to wear grip socks. They have some for sale, but if you are a regular to barre you should have some already. Bring water to drink because you will sweat. They do have you fill out some new client paperwork, so it is good idea to arrive early so you aren’t rushed.

Before ever taking my first class of barre, I have to say I wasn’t sure if I was going to be a fan or not… but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and ended up falling in love with xtend barre.
I definitely felt like I was getting a good workout and can see my butt and legs getting stronger! The upbeat music and energy of the class really helps put you in a good working out mood!
The teachers are so friendly and really supportive, they always encourage everyone to push themselves but never make you feel like you can’t perform the moves! I also like the fact that they staff remembers you by name… really makes you feel like a valued client! I loved my experience here and feel like it will change my body (and booty!) for the better

I bought the Groupon here over the summer and was pretty excited to try out ballet barre. I went a handful of times (mostly to the barre classes, but also to a pilates class) and I think I could sum up the experience as a total «meh!»
The barre workouts were pretty good, but followed the same routine every time (lots of low-​weight or body weight exercises done in multiples of 8 reps; very boring if repeated exactly over several classes [hence the reason I stopped at five classes]); the instructors were chippy but did not offer much in the way of guidance (what to do to not get hurt while exercising which is totally the reason to go to a studio vs. doing the same workout on Youtube). However, they weren’t pushy about buying more classes (and the place gets 2 stars instead of 1 for that reason) — but the whole experience felt overdone — and certainly over-​priced ($ 12 for a pair of cotton socks with fabric paint).
As an avid exerciser and a beginner dancer, I much prefer the ballet classes at Portland Parks and Rec at Laurelhurst Park — good prices, excellent workout (ballet is hard!) and instead of doing the same routine over and over (like ballet barre), you can learn choreography and technique in those classes (which they really don’t cover in this studio). Or, the classes at Studio X are great — way better workouts — small class experience, but still much cheaper than this place. I ended up feeling like it wasn’t a waste of $ 60 for the Groupon, but that I definitely wouldn’t pay full price (or even for the monthly «deals» they announce via email). If they had a $ 10 option I might be back. Until then, much better workout experiences to be had elsewhere..

I love the Xtend Barre classes! As someone with absolutely NO rhythm or dance background, I was a little nervous to give it a go. I had also previously tried a Barre3 class and was incredibly disappointed after paying $ 20 for an hour long workout that did not get me sweating and left me not sore the next day. But– I was happy to find that Xtend Barre is much more cardio focused (i.e. sweaty!) than Barre3, which has a lot more static/​mat movement.
ANYWAY, with some friendly encouragement, I tried Xtend Barre with a few friends during their opening weekend. It was amazing! I bought one of their special grand opening packages & continued to take classes. I normally steer away from group exercise classes and prefer to do my own thing — but I really enjoy the Xtend Barre classes! The instructors are friendly & upbeat, the workout is HARD (but not in a CrossFit-​intimidating sort of way), and the class is so fun that it just flies by. I would highly recommend Xtend Barre Portland to anyone looking to get some cardio and toning exercise in!
Full disclosure: I haven’t taken one in awhile as I’m a student and a strict budget, but when I can afford it, I’ll be back (their prices are comparable to other barre studios).

I work in the fitness industry and like trying out new ways to move — this is one I would never recommend for anyone looking to avoid injury, gain strength, or move better — or heck even have fun.
The story: I was new to barre when I came here, and had never been to their studio. I paid $ 20 to try it out (they don’t have a free trial), and I brought a friend.
Upon entering I wasn’t even acknowledged. I let the person at the front desk know I was new — signed in – and that was the only instruction or welcome I got. She went back to her laptop. No one asked if I had injuries (I do) or if I had any questions.
I asked what I’d need for footwear and they said I would need to buy a $ 15 pair of socks — I declined saying I’d just use my ballet flats — and I’m glad I did, because I won’t be going back.
We weren’t introduced to the teacher, told where to stand, etc. So we moved mats next to a mirror and were promptly told that wasn’t the right place to stand (thanks for the heads up?).
Then class started and for an hour I watched as the class of women were taught movements that I knew would actively injure their joints (please if you try this place don’t do their push-​up variations). I didn’t do a large portion of the movements knowing it would be harmful for me, but most people wouldn’t know not to do them. (And the instructor never asked why I was doing something different).
The instructor also didn’t provide any options or alternative movements. I saw most of the people in the class have terrible form and the instructor never corrected it.
What really sealed the deal for me though, is at the end of the class, my friend had accidentally bought the newbie special of 3 classes for $ 40 online, and asked if she could be refunded $ 20 (she’d still pay for the class she took and the expensive socks that she didn’t actually need). They not only didn’t know how to refund her —but when the manager called her back, she said she wouldn’t refund her.
After a lengthy conversation, they refunded her $ 20, so she basically had to fight to only pay for what she used.
This is a night and day contrast to my experience at Barre3 just down the road (where I was warmly greeted, they had showers and towels, it’s clean, friendly, and my instructor knew my name — previous injuries– and actually taught movements that wouldn’t injure people).
Such a bummer, I had high hopes for this place because they’re so close to me.
I’ll walk the extra 5 blocks to Barre3 for a better workout, local business, and friendlier service any day.
