Pretty basic selection in this small sandwich shop. Got a large pastrami sandwich to share with my girlfriend and we were both underwhelmed. Everything about it was pretty disappointing, from the bread, to the meat, and the mustard(which was just cheap tasting Kraft yellow mustard). Probably better to look elsewhere for a cheap, tasty lunch.

Subs delicious enough to keep us coming back. The sandwiches are huge, fresh, and filled to the brim with fixings. My only complaint would be that their bread is a bit doughy and soft, and as another reviewer stated, it will become soggy and fall apart pretty quickly. This doesn’t detract from the deliciousness, though. Their cold veggie is my favorite and my husband loves the cheese steak and Italian. Good news for the gluten-free — they now offer a gluten-free bun.

Delicious sandwiches! I had the chicken salad with tomatoes, lettuce and pickles. The sandwich was very big and filled with chicken salad. I like the soft bread they use. One diner with us enjoyed the steak and cheese and one had the roast beef with horseradish mustard– everyone was happy with their food. Only annoyance(but trust me it was truly annoying!!) was the cashier charged me twice for my order. She ran my card and returned it to me and then as we were waiting for our sandwiches she said she needed to run it again. I should have said no. I logged into my bank account and saw that both charges went through! As a result, I had to contact my bank, then the owner of Bennett’s to get a letter stating it was the vendor error and then back to my bank for the refund. Owner sent the letter via email as I requested about six hours after we called and he did apologize. It would have been classy to offer us a condolence sandwich or two for our trouble. I will pay cash next time.

I’ve gone to their Portsmouth location a few times and have always received both excellent service and food. Their ingredients are fresh, everything is made right where I can see them, and they definitely don’t skimp on the meat like other places do. Everyone has been especially friendly when we come in and I’ve never had a bad meal. We also ordered a company lunch from them once which everyone raved about, and then the next day the owner popped by to make sure we were happy with our order and to tell us they appreciated the business. They know how to run a company for sure.

I’m gluten free, so it’s been years since I’ve had a sub sandwich. I just ordered the Famous Italian on their(small) gluten free roll, and was amazed by how big the sandwich was! It was delicious, and I’ll definitely get 2 meals out of it. Thank you, Bennett’s, for allowing me to indulge in a fantastic sub for the first time in a long time!

Great spot for a quick lunch. I’m looking forward to try trying something different next time. The Italian sandwich was great.

I stopped in for a cheesesteak sub because they were so highly recommended. Believe me, I see why they are. I ordered my standard cheesesteak … Provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. The positive things … They give you more steak than you could possibly expect on a sandwich. The meat quality was also very good. So we are well on our way to a great sandwich. However … The negative things … The roll just didn’t hold up. It was too soft and lacked any flavor. There was no texture to it and it really detracted from the sandwich. Like I have always said, you cannot have a great sandwich without great bread. This was the biggest problem by far. I ordered hot peppers but never got them on my sandwich. But the real issue was that they just lacked punch. The last item was the manner in which the sub was made. While they try very hard to give you good value, over packing with lettuce and tomato on the bottom results in some bites having no steak at all. Otherwise you have to rearrange your sub yourself which can get messy. There is an art to sandwich making. This was explained to me first by Calvin, of Calvin’s World Famous Cheesesteaks in San Jose. Very few people really understand this but the manner in which the sandwich interacts with your mouth and nose is key. Taste, temperature, and spice can all be manipulated by the way a sandwich is crafted. Saying all of this, Bennett’s has the ability to be a 5 star sandwich shop in my opinion with some minor tweaks.

I think I went on an off day. Had the steak and cheese. The meat overcooked to a sad grey, exuding grease, the cheese barely present. Kid cooking on the grill, not appearing particularly well trained. Everybody extremely pleasant. Given the great reviews, I will have to try again

LOVETHISPLACE. I work nearby so I’ve become a bit of a regular. Their sandwiches taste great and are generously sized. Their staff is super friendly and efficient. I just wish they had more options for sandwiches. Also: maybe a dumb addition since I don’t know if they make these or not but their Whoopie Pies are top notch.

Bennett’s seems to me like a shop that’s more likely to succeed than the last few restaurants that have occupied this spot. Service is efficient and friendly, sandwiches are big, the selection is good, and the restaurant is clean. If I still worked in Portsmouth, I would probably come here regularly. Prices aren’t cheap but that’s downtown Portsmouth. But about the sandwiches — I got the 12″ pastrami & cheese(~$ 10) and although it was big, the ratio of bread to pastrami was unimpressive. I think I left about 1⁄3 of the roll behind but it still filled me up. That’s not a complaint but it isn’t really a complement either. I plan on coming back in the future and I’m looking forward to finding something I can really rave about.

Classic sandwich shop delivering bread baked fresh daily, crisp vegetables and top notch meats. My family and friends have visited this location on four occasions without disappointment. The service is fast and efficient, prices comparable to other top sandwich shops particular when one considers the size of the sandwiches. One large sandwich feeds two people!!! On my various visits I have enjoyed the cheesesteaks, fresh turkey and provolone and the Ham Italian. All were outstanding. When in Portsmouth for lunch Bennett’s is my go to spot.

Love this spot for a great lunch in Portsmouth! I’m a vegetarian and the cold veggie sandwich here is so fresh, crisp and delicious. Cannot beat the price for the size and quality of the ingredients. Not to mention the shop is super cute. I love the décor. Can’t wait to visit Portsmouth again… Mmmm!

Love this place!!! Service was so friendly and quick, much like the shop in Kennebunk! I had a cheesesteak and it was just like I had remembered from the other shop, the bread is amazing!!! I saw some other reviews that said the sandwiches are big and Yes they are BIG! What’s so bad about that?!! My husband had a lobster roll… they put so much meat on the lobster roll it’s amazing and so yummy! I heard the bread is baked daily and they do source some of their ingredients locally. Not sure how subway can survive in this town especially serving greenish/purple turkey and other various mystery meats.

I had an 8″ chicken cheese sub here. It was overflowing with chicken meat, peppers, onions, and cheese and tasted awesome.

Good sandwiches, I think this location is just as good as the Kennebunk Maine location. The cheeseburger sub is tasty. Normally I enjoy the bread very much, but my first time at this location the bread wasn’t as good as usual. Fast, easy and yummy. Worth the stop if you’re interested in a sammich!

A very nice sandwich shop that serves high quality sandwiches and lobster rolls. The price is on the high side and the lobsters rolls are quite small.

Stopped by Bennett’s on a sunny Portsmouth day, and from the looks of their menu had high hopes. The venue is well sized with many tables and a few outdoor seating options. Their menu is broken into cold and hot sandwiches with 4″, 8″, and 12″ sizes. I ordered the 12″ Italian sub with everything on it. Now, I’ll warn you ahead of time but the sandwich was huge! The length was what I expected but the sandwich probably weighed 5 lbs! Now this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if you order this size be prepared to take the 2nd half home. Now, the meats and cheese were tasty inside the sandwich, but unfortunately the bread was very soggy. This must have been from the sauces used and oil/vinegar, but made the sandwich very messy and hard to eat. I’ll give them another shot next time I’m in Portsmouth, but first impression didn’t blow me away.
