Nothing more classic in Portsmouth than grabbing a late night burger at Gilley’s. It’s cheap, delicious, and the atmosphere forces you to talk to others instead of looking at your damn phone. The staff here is nice – just make sure you get your order crystal clear and that you’re taken care of.

Stop looking anywhere else and eat here. Just bring cash. Food was fantastic and so were the prices.

Gilley’s is a Seacoast tradition. After the expansion of the kitchen the burgers are a little less tasty than they once were(I blame the new grill without the decades of baked in flavor) but I still love them. And the hot dogs remain basic but stellar. I particularly love that they have malt vinegar available for the fries. If you’re from out of town be aware that Gilley’s has maybe 10 seats inside(counter stools), frequently has an extra long line, and is CASHONLY(nothing bigger than a $ 20). I particularly love hitting up Gilley’s for a hot dog and fries after last call at the bars(even though I have to wait in line with all the other drunks).

Cute place, only a few seating. Heard such great things about this place, but when I tried it, I wasn’t too pleased. The burger is mediocre, couldn’t finish it. And I wasn’t a fan of their fries, just tasted like burnt potatoes skins to me. The lady was extremely nice and 90 percent of the seats were taken, so it got crowded in the little place. I just took it to my hotel to eat. Enjoy!

it is a cool place to eat and feel like you are back in time. There is one guy working at night and he will make it however you want it. Locals were eating burgers. I liked that I could get my hot dog bun grilled as well as my hot dog. There is a parking garage nearby. It is near a bunch of posh restaurants.

We stopped at Gilley’s on our way driving through Portsmouth on our way home from Maine. It was early and we were the second customer of the day. We ordered two cheeseburgers and a side of fries… Totaling just under $ 10! There aren’t many seats as most have noted but it doesn’t take long to eat and enjoy your cheeseburgers! It’s not the sort of place to linger unless you are people watching. It’s a tasty little burger served in a unique spot tucked away on a small side street a few blocks from downtown. An iconic location open into the wee hours to satisfy a late night/early morning craving for a tasty hotdog or burger!

WORSTEXPERIENCE I’VEEVERHAD! The male cheuvenist running the place was so rude the great birthday memories of the night were overshadowed.

Best cheese burger I had in a while. I was looking for a fast food in Portsouth one Thursday evening when I saw Gilley’s. I didn’t have cash on me and this is cash only place and I am so glad I made the effort to go to ATM and get cash. I ordered one cheese burger with all ingredients(everything that he could add to it). It was so amazing that I ordered the second one. and price is great: two cheese burgers and one ginger ale came to less than $ 10. Highly recommended for casual post drinks food.

This Portsmouth staple has long been the go to for a quick and quality burger or sandwich from the business professionals who come by day to the staggering last call drunks at night. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s definite quality with a menu of burgers, dogs, sandwiches, fries and cans of sodas. The line is often out the door. Swing by for a great meal for under 5 bucks and experience Portsmouth’s guilty pleasure.

Awesome! Just coming in town from the ATL and me and the guys find this place(thanks google maps). Small and quaint and right on the money! We walked into the place with no one here and as soon as we finished placing our order, 10 people showed up, so I know that this place is legit. One very nice lady took our order and cooked everything lickity split, along with everyone else’s order and we were in and out within 20 minutes. I’ll be back anytime I’m up in the area of the country!

This establishment is legendary here in historic downtown Portsmouth. The food is the right kind of greasy and filling. Don’t be too put off by the atmosphere of a small trailer. I feel kind of gross eating here sober but there’s nothing you want more at 1AM after you’ve just finished your night at one of Portsmouth’s many downtown bars!

We always eat here and it’s so delicious but tonight we sat in line for 15 minutes and ordered our food then we got ignored and the 3 people behind us got their order and the cashier asked what we wanted AGAIN and we had to wait, he was then rude about our order but got it to us within another 15 minutes(VERYRUDETHISWHOLETIME)(he had glasses and tattoos) after everyone in line ordered. Great place, but they only cater to their regulars and that’s a terrible business strategy. Unfortunately we will never, EVER go here again, thanks to your horrible current customer service.

We happened upon Gilley’s about 9:30 at night because most of the other restaurants were closed. It is a fun little place and we were drawn in by their Man Vs. Food claim. I had a ham and egg sandwich and my husband had 2 burgers and a fry. The food isn’t spectacular, but it’s good and simple and inexpensive!

Gulley’s sits tucked almost like an afterthought behind a parking deck, but if you’re a fan of burgers and nostalgia, you shouldn’t overlook this place that’s been around since 1912. I think I was the first customer of the day when they opened at 11 a.m. I had a cheeseburger and a ginger ale, which set me back $ 4.70. The juicy thin uneven edged patty held mouth-watering flavor in the edges. I had this topped with crisp diced onions and pickle slices, ketchup and rectangles of white cheese. The burger was on a nice bun, not some standard Butternut or Sunbeam bun. Gilley’s is cash only, and there are eight vintage stools mounted to the floor for your seating pleasure. My order was prepared by an efficient gentleman behind the counter who was taking orders, preparing food and watching the Price is Right. I agree that this is a great American classic. Simple and delicious.

Late-night chili cheese fries? I’m in. This place is always a mainstay for me after a long night in the Portsmouth bar scene. The venue is tiny, but the guy who’s behind the counter is always a pleasure and usually pretty quick too. I typically stick with the chili-cheese fries, but taking a gander at the menu last time I was in I was intrigued by the poutine. Did I mention how cheap it was? Well, it is. You can leave without putting even the slightest dent in your wallet. Make sure you bring cash and be prepared for a gut-bomb, but if there were ever a hangover cure, this is it.

Don’t get me wrong this isn’t 5-star fine dining but being from Jersey it was an unexpected find. A true taste from home:) and we know diner food! The burger was reminiscent of growing up going to The Fireplace with Grandma or White Manna with my Dad. Add this to the list of «Great American Classics»!!! We were looking for breakfast but when we stumbled upon the cute train-car we shifted gears. My husband had a loaded Cheese Burger and chilly fries while I had a cheese burger and cheese-fries«Techno» not«Disco» for those who get it… Canadian’s look it up. For the road we grabbed two massive brownies-Soo glad we did!!! Man working the counter said it takes him 4 days to eat 1… LOL, guess next time we will stop back and show him how it’s done. Loved this joint! It was another treat they had MUG Root Beer :)

I think I went here at least once a week during both pregnancies. I could never get enough chili cheese dogs or fries. This place is after hours central when the bars close. Everyone hits this wonderfully delicious dive when the bars shut down for heavenly, greasy eats. Just what the belly needs after a few pints. They have the best chili cheese dogs and chili cheese fries in NH.

Greasy bad-for-you food heaven in a tiny cramped dining car — what is not to love? Cash only!
