By far you will get a much better cup of coffee from Von Solln than the local competition in downtown Portsmouth. The coffee was rich and flavourful, and the staff very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was quiet enough for conversation(but not so quiet that you feel like everyone is listening to you!), and the seats comfy enough to make you want to stay a while. I was delighted and will be returning for more.

Bullet point review: –Smelled wonderful outside; they had just finished baking, it smelled like French toast –When my friend spilled her drink, they did not hesitate to make her a new one! –Very nice staff –Seemed patient too when a bunch of college kids wooing over stuff being German; even laughing at a guy speaking German, and thereafter not buying anything –Pistachio bread was very good, you can tell it was baked there –Hazelnut White Mocha latte was good, but relied too much on sweetness –Not the best coffee in town(Caffe Kilim) but serviceable –The little girl drawing on the entrance way is a memorable distinction –Music is relaxing and low in the background –A seat I had was sooooo comfortable –Lots of seating, but not much of the comfy seat I was sucked into –Marble tables are nice, place seems fairly clean –Simple aesthetic with pictures of Germany(I’m assuming) on the wall –Very colorful signs

Got an apple pastry here today and it was moldy. Not only is that disgusting, but it tells me that their products aren’t made fresh. How long does it need to sit on a shelf to grow mold? GROSS.

I’m hooked… Amazing! The real deal… if your looking for a real bakery. Fresh with quality ingredients. The strudel served on top of warm Bavarian cream was wicked good :). Coconut coffee was the best. Surprising that many people waste their money down the street at a sub-par café when you can get the best here!

Definitely one of the best coffee shops in the downtown area; the best when they had their liquor license for speciality coffee drinks. I always prefer this café over BnG because it’s so low key and accessible. The pastries are fresh and never disappoint.

Stopped in for a medium roast iced coffee on a hot afternoon. Excellent. The baked goods looked great, too.

Love this place more and more with each visit. Got an iced americano. Made to pefection. Double shot of espresso. The owner(presumed) was giving careful directions to staff on how to properly make — a little bit of water because the ice would melt some with the espresso. Great flavor. Pastries are awesome too!

All the items in the bakery are moist and delicious! I especially love the chocolate chip cookies and blueberry muffins. I always make sure to stop by here to pick up treats when I’m in the area. Highly recommend.

I was really excited about this place but my cappuccino was totally watery, need to try again and hope its better. Awesome location and good atmosphere.

Excellent little café. Not the most exotic choices, but perfect for a quiet afternoon — especially if Breaking New Grounds has no seating. Vonsolln has seating, faster Internet, better prices.

Where can you buy coffee from the roaster himself? Right here at VonSolln… Great brews of coffee and very friendly service. I come by every time I am in town.

For coffee fanatics! This place and people are great! Leo gets to know your order and name right away! Authentic coffee with great selection of flavors and sandwiches! Off the beaten path of downtown which makes it a great hole in the wall!

Visited here with family members last Monday and wasn’t all that impressed. The dude making the coffee was pleasant and a hard worker(he was the only person working at the time) but the coffee was less than expected. I ordered an American and brewed coffee was used instead of Espresso and when I questioned this practice, my coffee was remade. My Americano was very watery and unpleasant and I didn’t take more than a few sips from it. Others in my party ordered various pastries which I felt were grossly overpriced. There are pleanty of others places to try next time.

The Good: Great coffee, small-batch German beans roasted right there in shop! Great European atmosphere — open with comfy, high-top bench seating along the walls as well as lower tables looking out the big windows to downtown Portsmouth(in the summer, there’s a couple tables right outside on the sidewalk too!) Delicious almond croissant! Not like our buttery American ones, more dark & deiicately crisp on the outside yet light and lovely on the inside — with a marzipan filling, powdered sugar and almond bits on top! The Bad: Nothing! The Food: Delicious almond croissant! I’d go back for another, and would love to try more pastries! The Service: Great! Overall: If you’re walking around downtown Portsmouth, this is an awesome place to stop and relax European-style with a cup of locally-roasted coffee and a homemade sweet treat!

This cute shop is within easy walking distance of both downtown and Strawberry Banke. The décor includes photos of Munich. There are greeting signs in German. Some of the menu items are also listed in German. They have a small sitting area, but on the day we visited had made the wise choice to lift up their window and it was as though we were outdoors. Lovely! The latte that I had was served in a large China mug and was well made with a good deal of spoonable foam. Yummy. I did not ask for whole milk, but I believe it was made with that anyway. We also tried the Shoka Sahne Torte(chocolate chip cheesecake). It appeared to have no crust. This was sooooo tasty that my mom, who never eats sweets, almost ate half of this. Which was good, because the piece was huge and meant to be shared. I hope. The server was friendly. This was a good experience, and I’m glad we snuck out the Strawberry Banke gate for a quick boost before touring some more houses.

I was in a time crunch looking for breakfast take-out in downtown Portsmouth and this place turned out to be a better fit than the other two nearby that I looked into. The latte I had was very good. The breakfast sandwiches from here were just so-so, but I guess you don’t go to German coffee and pastry shops for breakfast sandwiches. The streusels are tasty, but the difference in taste between the lemon and apple streusels seems to be pretty subtle. Maybe they gave me two apples and not one apple, one lemon? I’m not sure, but either way, they hit the spot. I was in and out quick enough that I don’t have much to say about the staff. If I were in Portsmouth again, I would want to sit and relax here with a couple of pastries and some delicious strong coffee drinks.

I really wanted to like Kaffee VanSolin given the great reviews here but it wasn’t up to expectations. Service was great on a very early Sunday morning(and looked like the regulars were already in their regular tables). I got a french toast muffin and the dark kick coffee, both to go. The muffin was good — not great — I think the muffin bottom was a bit too dense for my liking. The top, true to french toast form, was crunchy/chewy(that is, more so than a typical muffin top), and overall the flavor was if you transformed cinnamon/french toast crunch — the 90s cereal — into a muffin, rather than actual french toast. As for the coffee… it was burnt, and I wish I had realized that before I was leaving. At first I tried to give the coffee the benefit of the doubt, hoping that was the«kick»…but nope. Definitely burnt.

Close your eyes and imagine your ideal cozy coffee shop — open them and you’re inside Kaffee VonSolln. The atmosphere is comfortable and engaging, but relaxing and friendly. Great place to read, study, chat, or chill. The coffee itself is top-notch as well. All the beans are roasted on site and they offer a variety of delicious blends. Definitely check this place out next time you’re in Portsmouth… you’ll be glad you did. I also highly recommend the German Iced Coffee… you’re in for a delightful surprise!
