Ahhh Moseberth’s … Everyone’s favorite chicken place in Portsmouth. I’ve always heard people talk about it but I’ve never actually been until today. I went around 12:30pm while on my lunch break and excepted a long line but there was one person on line. I scoped out the menu and saw the 5 party wings, fries and hush puppies meal and I ordered that. I was given a ticket with a number on it and my number was called in like seconds I was like whoaa. It sucks that there isn’t a place to sit and dine in because I would have enjoyed that. So as far as the food goes the wings were very good, nice and crispy. The fries were Ok, Nothing special and the hush puppies were a bit tasteless to me. I was eating them trying to see what they taste like but my tastebuds couldn’t find it. This place reminds me of a Crown Fried Chicken or a Kennedy Fried chicken. I’ll come back for the wings tho.

I was so disappointed with this chicken. I saw a review of it on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives just over a week ago. Of course Guy Fieri raved about how good it was and so did some customers. My husband had a conference in Portsmouth this week and I asked that he stop and pick up chicken and potato salad. The chicken had no seasoning what so every. Maybe this was a bad batch but I can’t see how anyone could give this high reviews. It gets a one star for the potato salad which was okay. Will avoid restaurants that are reviewed on TV food shows from now on.

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. Love the chicken, bbq, hush puppies, etc. The people who work there are wonderful and the food has never left me disappointed. A staple of Portsmouth, VA!

I am always on the lookout for the best Fried Chicken ever. I have eaten chicken all over the United States and every new town that I visit I’m always on the hunt for the best chicken in that area. So after researching on the Internet for several hours I found that possibly the best chicken in Virginia might be located, Portsmouth Virginia. Since I was on vacation, my diet was pretty much shot, my mother and I decided to stop by Moseberth’s Chicken Place and see what all the hype was about. As we walk into the restaurant, or should I call it a dining bar(since there is no seating), I quickly inhaled the smell of fresh cooked fried chicken. Jumping right in line we quickly ordered a two-piece chicken basket with french fries and a large sweet tea for each of us. We took our number and waited for our food to be served. After a few minutes both orders were ready and off to the car, we went to enjoy what we hope to be some awesome chicken. In the car, we open the box and quickly the aroma of fresh fried chicken filled our lungs. I’m not sure how they do it but this chicken was so hot it must have been cooked in a volcano. Using the plastic forks provided, I quickly tore the meat off the bone to let it start cooling down so I could enjoy the chicken is quick as possible. While I waited for the chicken to cool, I dove into the coleslaw that’s what’s served in a small container. Holy cow the coleslaw had a bite of what I believe was horseradish along with vinegar. It was in a white creamy sauce with just enough carrots to make this an awesome discovery. After finishing the coleslaw was time for the main course. From the first bite of the chicken, I knew we have found the best chicken in the area. Both my mother and I began feasting on the perfectly battered extra crispy chicken. Without speaking a word we both glanced each other giving the head bob of acknowledgment and a smile which in most eating circles means this is a pretty damn good chicken. This is the type of joint that people drive by on a daily basis and never realize what they are missing. If you’re in the area and you like fried chicken don’t waste your time at the chain restaurants, go to Moseberth’s and experience what others imitate but they have mastered in their there 50+ years cooking chicken. Damn, it’s good.

When we arrived and noticed there was no parking we got a good feeling because that’s always a sign the food is going to be great. Its a very small lot but we managed to find a place to put the car. We ordered chicken for a family of 6 on a night we didn’t want to cook. We got chicken, hush puppies, slaw and rolls. The chicken was really good not greasy. The slaw was a hit. Hush puppies had good flavor but nothing to rave about but it didn’t matter since it was bonus. We will def be returning.

Love this place! Great BBQ, fried chicken, side items: succotash, greens, fries. Hush puppies are yummy too!

I don’t know how many times I’ve been here since my earliest memories in the 80’s and never tried the chicken. I realize how ridiculous that seems, but my parents brought us here for the BARBECUE. And I believe it is the most underrated item on the menu. It is still the only reason they go. The only reason I know to go. I don’t care that Moseberth’s found fame on The Food Network. Because if they didn’t try the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and the best hushpuppies in life, they missed out. And that makes me sad.

Tasty fried chicken and awesome hush puppies. It’s definitely a hole in the wall place but they have delicious food. The desserts are okay but I would recommend coming for the chicken. I get the white meat dinner and it’s huge. Great food for a great price.

One word for ya’ — MEH! My son is in the Marine Corps. He was wounded in Afghanistan and sent to the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. I am here while he is undergoing surgery and receiving treatment. Hubby called me all excited, saying that he had seen an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and it had a fried chicken place. «Go try it», he says. So when the kid was well enough to be up & around I loaded him and his wheelchair into the car and drove to this famous chicken establishment. The parking situation is dicey, but we managed to find a spot on the street. Dillon grabbed his crutches instead of the wheelchair and we hobbled in. Our order was taken promptly and we received our food quickly. No complaints. We ordered a leg snack, breast snack, collards, coconut cream pie and a couple of sodas. We hobbled back to the car, and drove back to the house where I am staying. The fries were greasy and as floppy as that huge hat my momma wears to the beach. The hushpuppies(which I normally love!!!) were so disappointing. They really tasted microwaved. The Collards were tender, but not very flavorful. However, the meal did end on a high note… on a big fluffy, coconutty, dreamy high note. So, if you want great coconut cream pie, go here. If you want the rest, I’d head somewhere else.

The best liver and gizzards in Hampton Roads. Highly recommend trying this place if you like chicken.

Another hole in the wall chicken joint that’s been around for as long as I can remember and I’m in my 30’s. I can remember coming here after leaving Tower Mall with my parents on a Saturday(YES, I took it way back) Parking lot can seriously only hold 5 cars on a good day. If you go, you will more than likely be parking across the street and hoofing it over to the restaurant. There is not a place to eat inside, this is carry out only baby. When you go in, please stand closer to the back to read the menu and figure out what you want before going to the counter to order. If you are hemming and hawing and not really sure what you’re doing these old ladies at the counter will try and give you a tongue lashing and most likely they will be successful in doing so. They have always done pretty good business but have gained some notoriety when they were featured on DD&D with Guy F. I like their chicken. Not love it. For me when it comes to Mom and Pop CHICKEN, I’d rather Golden Skillet, Feather & Finn or Pollards(in that order) I do absolutely love their hushpuppies, fries and their GIZZARDSSSSSSSSSS! I’m not going to say that this is a must see restaurant, but if you’re close, go on and fall up in there.

The gizzards cut my mouth because they were too hard as in not boiled before you fry them and I kept finding the yellow sac on some of them… really. I’ll stick to Golden Skillet.

No dine in, only take out but amazing fried chicken! Sides are limited to collards, cole slaw, baked beans and succotash. Really wish they would offer Mac and cheese or mashed potatoes. Regardless, worth the drive — parking is very quirky so be prepared.

I went to this place over a two year ago after seeing it on Diners’s, Drive-In’s and Dive’s. Nice piping hot chicken with a nice variety of sides. The hot sauce is vinegar base giving it some extra«twang» along with some heat. Prices are reasonable and you get a lot for your money. I think Ill pay them a visit this weekend!

I grew up in Hampton Roads so my parents took me there as a child and I continued to eat there as an adult. After moving away this is one of the places in Hampton Roads that I miss the most. It did not get a five from me only because the fries are a bit too soggy and greasy for my taste. If you like southern style crispy fried chicken, you will love this place. The best dressing and hush puppies I have ever had! There is no place to dine in so be prepared to get your food to go. The folks are friendly and you usually get your food quickly although there are some times like Friday and Saturdays when you could encounter a long line during peak lunch or dinner times. .Portions are healthy so you definitely get a lot for your money. When I get back to the area, I always try to stop in. There are only like 2 – 3 parking spots at the building so you will have to park in the parking lot across the street and walk. This is a busy street so please look every way before crossing the street.

Local gem. Great chicken and great BBQ sandwiches. I’ve been coming here for years. The sides are a bit small but you don’t go for the sides.

My guy told me that Moseberth’s is a Portsmouth staple. So we had to try it. We had chicken sandwich boxes. The boxes come with a fried chicken sandwich, fries, hushpuppies and coleslaw. The chicken was a little over cooked, but it was good. I liked the sweet pickle. The coleslaw was a little too sweet for my liking. But the HUSHPUPPIES. Friends, let me repeat, HADITNOTBEEN for the hushpuppies it would have been a meh for me. There is little to no parking by the building. Call ahead for your order. It gets you in and out much faster. I’ll have to try something else at Moseberth’s. I’m willing to give them another try based on their lovely hushpuppies.

First time visiting Morsberths. Great food at a great price. Myself and wife both got the breast dinner. Could have gotten by with just one… but heck… buy 2! What a steal. Highly recommended. Take out only… and that is just fine

I made my first of three or four pilgrimages of the year to Moseberth this past Saturday. I don’t know why I had this chicken on my mind, but I did for some reason. I guess I wanted good chicken without the flavor overload. It was the usual wait — about 12 minutes. That means you are getting something good, something fresh, and not something sitting under tanning lamps for hours. I ordered the Regular Dinner. It comes with a breast, a wing, a thigh, and a drumstick, two small sides of Potato Salad and Cole Slaw, an order of fries, and a few hush puppies to round out the order. The chicken at Moseberth is amazing, in my opinion. It’s crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. This chicken has much less seasoning than most others. It doesn’t seem to be marinated, one, and the dredge has just the right amount of simple seasonings –mostly just salt and pepper. In other words, I don’t feel that I need to drink a gallon of water both during and after my finger-likingness. The fries are always good and hot. The hush puppies are deadly, but once in a while I resist replacing them with the rolls. This was one of those days. They were hot and just G-O-O-D! The only negative are those sides. They come from what seems to be 128oz. milk cartons… Yes, premanufactured. I know they will never be as good as the homemade stuff. Reese’s make decent potato salad, but I’m not fond of their slaw. I’d prefer they both be made from scratch, honestly. As long as the chicken shines, I can forgive this. The hot sauce at Moseberth is amazing. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s premanufactured or ‘doctored’ up. It’s not really spicy, but has a vinegary kick second to none. It’s the kind of stuff you find on Carolina-style BBQ, off-red with a strong vinegary nose, but has little heat and zero pepper flakes. It’s good to the last drop. I watched box after box of chicken, BBQ combos, livers, and gizzards make their way out the front door. I love the chicken here, but I found myself wanting something different as well. Maybe next time, I’ll find the nerve to try something new here. This is one of Triple D’s local finds where I agree with yo’ boy, Guy. I haven’t had the same good luck with most of his local finds, but this one is a keeper.
