Stopped at the Southern Pit for lunch on our way thru town. The food was good, but not great. The prices are very low. I give it 5 stars bc the alternative for the price is fast food, and it beats the pants off that. If you’re passing through the area, stop for a tasty treat!

So sad they are closed for good. They had a great thing going but the owner was injured in a accident last year and it was too much to keep going for him. I wish him and the rest of the team all the best and many thanks for some wonderful meals.

You know a place is good when their drive-thru intercom is broken, and people are lined up to order at the drive through anyway. After seeing them get ready before lunch service, I decided to make a stop on my way back through Portsmouth on a work trip. I went for a combo of ribs and smoked wings, and I was impressed! The ribs had a great bite and came with a nice side of sauce for dipping, while the wings were coated in a tasty«spicy Carolina» mustard sauce. Oh, and note — whole wings here, joints, tips, and all, not just the«party cut» wings you might get at a bar. I also tried the slaw, which had a nice tang under the creamy texture, and the sweet potato fries, which were a nice compliment to the powerful smoky flavors.

There is one simple thing that bumps this review up from a 3 star to a 4 star. Brown Sugar Butter The boy and I were taking a walk and a sprinkling and dreary Saturday when we decided we were hungry. Lo and behold there was Southern Moon Pit Barbeque right in front of us. We were the only people in the place and the staff wasn’t what I would call exactly friendly, but that didn’t stop us from ordering a pound(yes, you read that right) of pulled pork and sweet potato fries. When we got our food, there were 2 things that we didn’t recognize on the plate. One we would come to find out was spicy cole slaw and the other was, you guessed it: Brown Sugar Butter I’m a big fan of butter anyway, but there is a simple genius in dipping sweet potato fries in this stuff. I’d never thought of it before but from now on I WILL want this served with my sweet potato fries! I almost forgot about the other food. This is where it was A-OK. Nothing stood out as great but it was good nourishing food with sauce that wasn’t too sickly sweet like some barbecue sauces I’ve had before so it didn’t cover up the taste of the meat. The spicy slaw was also really good especially considering I don’t like mayonnaise-based slaw so this one(which was mustard-based) was really nice and crunchy with a nice spicy kick!
