If I had the custom of purchasing freshly baked sweet bread regularly I would be in Gisselle’s every morning, day or night; whenever I could rest assured they would greet me with a smile and a bountiful selection of scrumptious baked goods from which to choose. Gisselle’s is the premier Mexican Bakery on Main Street, Poughkeepsie, family-owned and operated since 2002, it provides the large Oaxacan immigrant population of Poughkeepsie with the«most authentic and freshly made Mexican bread in the Hudson Valley.» I’ve been in the shop a couple times when customers, regulars I presume, came in and immediately picked up one of the large aluminum serving platters and a pair of tongs to then approach the 3 glass cabinets displaying the batches made fresh that day. It was surprising for a moment because so different than the typical bakeries and doughnut shops most popular in the US where someone behind a counter has to retrieve them for you. Arguably one of there most popular items is the Rosca de Reyes which is a hot seller for Three Kings Day. I got to enjoy my fair share of it this year– for breakfast with coffee and milk and for a sweet snack or dessert days after the holiday. In addition to their baked goods, Gisselle’s also sells an assortment of baking and food supplies ranging from hot chocolate bars to corn tortillas. One final note to encourage all those non Spanish speaking individuals to visit Gisselle’s: although they are a Mexican Bakery several of the bakers and employees speak English very well and will be able to answer any questions or assist you with your purchase. Highly recommend! Whether for a new sweeter version of your breakfast or for group celebrations! Best bakery in town!
