The parking lot is the most confusing part of this place. Every time you think you’ve found an exit, you’ve hit a one-way roadway that you are not allowed to enter. I’ve been stuck here driving in the parking lot. Supplies running low, hope receding in the distance of yet another one-way entrance.

This place has been in the area longer than I have. I’ve watched it grow from a small mall to the north end of «big box hell.» I’ve seen a lot of stores come and go, and I’ve seen the floor go from level to moguls. The only thing that has remained a constant is Marshall’s, and now for many years, Dragon’s Den at the opposite end. While the stores inside change frequently, there’s always been at least a handful of stores — often unique — that keep the Poughkeepsie Plaza Mall something worth visiting.

Sure the interior maybe dated, but it adds character to the Plaza itself. There really isn’t much to look inside in this plaza with a few expectional stores like Marshalls, Famous Footwear, the dollar Store, Joanne’s fabrics, and Dragon’s Den. There use to be a Hallmark and another store that sold books and other items, but both have gone out of business in the last three to four years. This is more of place where you go when you need something not just to look around. I don’t think most people consider the other stores outside of the Plaza associated with it be connected to the plaza like some people do. All and all not a bad place to walk around for a bit and then head elsewhere.

In the world of malls and shopping plazas, this one is ho-hum at best. Anchored at either end by large® stores, the remaining tiny shops in the mall area always seem to be changing. There is little consistency here, thus making it an unattractive option for shopping. Also, the building is pretty dated with awkwardly long hallways, old fixtures/furnishings and odd clientele. But that always makes for good people-watching! I’d recommend checking out the Galleria or South Hills Mall before the Plaza :/

Their website(yes they have one) proudly displays the plaza motto«Not just a place to go, it’s a destination». Wow. This is the mall your mom dragged you to.. . when she wanted to torture you! With exciting stores like«Jo-Ann Fabrics» «Sew N’ Vac» and who can resist«EmbroidMe» you can see why it’s such a «Destination»! Full of moms and barely conscious children. If Hollywood ever needs to set a film in the early 80’s, this is the place. No need to hire extras, local shoppers will do.(I still see people wearing t-shirts from«Bob’s» stores around town, how long ago did they go out of business?!”) There is a nice Marshall’s at one end and«The Dragon’s Den» to care for all your fantasy figurine needs. Great people watching at this mini mall meets time travel. The next time you need to pick up some new vacuum bags, put on your big hair, parachute pants and head down to the Plaza!
