This little breakfast and lunch spot(as of this writing they do dinners on Fridays) is down the road from our weekend haunt. We pass by often saying we should try it. We did, and here’s the report: It’s a clean place with a few booths, four top tables and a bar with five or so stools lined up. The owner was on the breakfast grill and one server was working the room full of 14 or so guests. The menu was small; quite limited, especially for our vegetarian preferences but we managed to settle on a Cheese Omelet — pretty plain jane as far as omelets go with two eggs, a slice or two of either provolone or swiss… maybe both. No seasoning, just a folded over flat pad of egg. I loathe eggs, but my Chennington likes them… and I got a «MEH» from him. My blueberry pancakes were light, fluffy, and chock full of… what looked to be frozen blueberries. They’re in season at this very moment, widely available, and there’s no excuse to EVER use these… unless it’s the winter, spring or fall during which time you shouldn’t offer anything with blueberries anyway. Sure, Preston Hollow may not exactly be in the middle of somewhere, but it is in the midst of some of the greatest agricultural land in the state! Get with the program, people! Now for the major offender… the home fries. Take a look at the photo I snapped to get a good peek. They were dark, almost gray in color. No diced onions, nary a bell pepper, or even salt and black pepper. What was there though? …meaty bits. Those that were from previously cooked stuff done on that very same grill. Joining the bits? …bacon fat. Jeez Louise, our veggie taste buds hit the meaty motherloade! It wasn’t good. At all. Clearly leftover potatoes cut into random chunks, sloppily griddled with all of that… meat…and spooned lukewarm onto a small plate. Meat notwithstanding, and I DO understand that home fries were made this way in probably every diner in the country… Back in 1975. Again, get with it people. It’s 2015. Let’s start cooking like it. These were just bad. Is there a call for more progressive, modern renditions of the classics around these parts? Maybe not by all, but there must be some around here like us two from downstate that appreciate the effort, much like some in Middleburgh and Cobleskill. The good spots, and I always make sure to look for some: the warm hellos from the staff, the good service, the cleanliness of the dining room, and the owner having the stones to step up and make something of this once hurricane ravaged place. I do salute her for that! I’m sure West Winds has a following, and that’s ok. For them. I’m not a follower, though, so I’ll leave this Pied Piper to guide those folks out of town.

The food is okay. The service is good. The waiter said my wrap would come grilled but it came out cold, which is fine because a wrap is supposed to be cold, but he got the description wrong. Nice kid, though. Not a single fresh fruit or veg on the menu. Also, no biz cards, no hours listed and no take away menus. They’re open 6am-2pm, it would be nicer if they stayed open a little later and had better marketing like a simple FB page.
