The Fifth Line Studio

This place has been a life changer for me.
Janine and Sarah are fantastic instructors and have a wealth of knowledge about the human anatomy.
I have been taking pelaties and yoga for years, but never had such knowledgable instruction.
So glad to have them near me.

The studio is beautiful and well-​equipped. But I came a for a good workout and got a sleepy/​mellow class (twice) instead. The instructor was very pleasant and the group small enough to allow for some individual attention. But it was not a challenging class at all (at open level), the same pace and intensity that I can get for cheap at the local YMCAs. I bought a package of classes and ended up not using it up because going to the studio felt like a waste of my time. I know pilates as a wonderfully challenging workout, and this studio simply falls short of the other ones I’ve been to.

Janine Flasschoen owner of The 5^th Line Studio gets my vote as the best movement practitioner in New York.
Her private Gyrotonic sessions are like muscular medicine. The studio is peaceful and visually pleasing. For the depth of knowledge, individualized attention and gentle encouragement, I find the prices reasonable. She and her staff also offer semi-​privates, tower classes (for 3 students), pilates and yoga.

When I started at The Fifth Line, I was brand new to Pilates. I am learning fast and getting in shape because even in group classes (all of which are small by design), I’ve gotten a ton of personal attention and help. I feel so much stronger and much more centered!
I’ve had the opportunity to try a variety of different things (tower, mat, Gyrotonic), and have been encouraged all along the way. Janine and her amazing staff offer a great variety of scheduling options, and I’ve been able to continue fitting Pilates into my complicated and ever-​changing schedule.
I’m going to have great, long relationship with this studio!

I am so glad I decided to go to the Fifth Line to take pilates. Initially my boyfriend and I started duet sessions with the owner, Janine, because we live on the block, and there was a great special. We both go to the YMCA but we were looking for a way to get long and lean without using a medicine ball or elliptical machine.
Janine has completely changed the way I exercise, walk, and even sit. She is amazing! After now 13 (wow!) sessions with her I feel stronger and substantially more knowledgeable about my body. But even after the first session you’ll feel like you learned a ton — and you’ll want to keep coming back for more. I recommend taking a few private/​duet sessions and then trying the pilates or gyrotonic tower classes. The classes have max 3 – 4 people in them, so it’s almost like having a private session.
Many of the teachers have advanced degrees in art or dance and have been teaching for 10+ years. They all have a different style and energy but I’ve felt incredible after each class no matter who the instructor is. Janine has a great roster here.
In addition to the tower classes, they also offer pilates mat, vinyasa yoga, and a restorative Alexander Technique class. Oh — and if you want to really kick your ass — you’ll take a TRX class. Trust me.
