First Unitarian Church of Providence

I have been coming to this church for many years, and love the community that is found here. People are welcoming and friendly, the religious education program for youth and families is wonderful. Our family is a mix religiously, but we all feel welcome in this space, no matter what our spiritual practice and beliefs are. There is a way for everyone to feel a part of this beloved community, whether that means going to church on Sunday, helping to feed the homeless, or fighting for the rights of immigrants. There are so many opportunities to learn and reach out into the greater community here. I am proud to be a member of the First Unitarian Church of Providence.

My girlfriend and I visited this church and were impressed: The building was historic and interesting. The greeters were attentive, the sermon by the retiring minister, the Rev. James Ford, was interesting and engaging, and the music was wonderful, both the choir (a nice, full sound) and the pianist. Catherine and I were blown away by the pianist/​music director’s performance of Chopin’s Prelude in D major. I was touched by Rev. Ford’s invitation to visitors to let the offertory plate pass them by, that our presence that morning was our gift. Also, I can tell that they sponsor a lot of programs in the church, including a Thanksgiving dinner. There is a lot of heart at this church. We’ll definitely be back from time to time.

I have been an active member at First Unitarian Church of Providence for the past 10 years and am proud to call it my spiritual home. It is a welcoming and loving community that offers hope/​support/​love, opportunities to serve within and outside of the congregation, a strong religious education program, first-​rate music, and a place to raise my children where they feel known and loved.
I look forward to welcoming new members to our church family soon!

I’m not a member of this churches congregation, so to be fair my review is based on the use of the church for the medical school graduation ceremony for Brown University. First off, I do find it slightly strange that Brown would choose a church as the venue for such an event, but once you get past that initial shock you will realize that the space is actually quite beautiful.
I will echo the sentiments of others in suggesting that acoustically the church leaves something to be desired, but the beauty makes up for it.
Tip: If possible sit up front. If you’re in the back row, you won’t hear a thing!

I got married here, though I am not a member of this (or any) church. The ONLY complaint is that it was swelteringly hot inside in August, and the one fan they had stood by the door, no one bothered to turn on. In the grand scheme of weddings, that’s a minor detail. I wouldn’t do it any differently, and we had beautiful pictures of the ceremony and did some posed shots outside that were great also. Everyone I dealt with was friendly & professional, and the price was definitely reasonable for such a gorgeous church.

Decent venue for graduation ceremony but with a few flaws. Acoustics in the balcony make it difficult to understand speakers because the sounds reverberate too much. Bathrooms are only on main floor.
