CLOSED! The falafel was terrible! .Dry and tasteless. The dolmas were stiff and bland. Kafta was nothing special and I found ground bones in it. Hummus was pretty standard… No pop of flavor. Only think I somewhat liked was the tabbouleh. I’m a chef and I hate to see small eateries close, but I’m glad this place did. The owner was a cheap jerk. His portions compared to prices were pathetic, and he always seemed like serving you was a hassle. If you wanted, say, baba ghanoush instead of hummus on your combo plate, he made it seem like you were busting his chops… Then he’d way over-charge you an upgrade. He shouldn’t be in food service, nor dealing with the public. I’m saying all this because if I ever see him operating a restaurant again, I’ll run away as fast as I can. East Side Pockets, FTW!

The only acceptable item is the falafel wrap… and even then they’re stingy with the toppings, especially the humus. If you’re a ways off from East Side Pockets on College Hill, you can give it a try… but to be quite honest their meat items taste horrible(esp the Kofta). So just stick to the veggie options if you’re super hungry and can’t find anywhere else on Atwells to eat.

Consistent 4 stars, food is always good and delivery is prompt. Tried the Greek salad tonight, fresh, full of feta, comes with a pita, but surprised they don’t use kalamata olives. There were a couple of black ones on there, that’s different. Portion size was nice, lasted me 2 meals and the greek dressing was really good. Tried a chicken finger dinner with fries for my son, it was above average with a nice crispy breading and he loved the honey mustard. My husband stuck with his buffalo chicken wrap and enjoyed it. Still find it pricey, but it’s a nice change of pace when we are looking for delivery.

It was ok — not great. The falafel was very dry, the tzatziki was very runny, the chicken shawarma was decent. There are probably some other things on the menu that are worth the high rating, but I’ve had much better Greek take-out elsewhere.

Yeah, I don’t think this place will last long. :P INTRO I’ll give the positives first, to show you I’m not some random weirdo slandering every other new establishment. POSITIVES Nice looking menu, impressive variety and a tasty looking menu for sure. Clean looking place, yet no dirt, or snobby or funky attitudes. FOOD Good enough, but RI guys like me(and many others) have had better for lunch. SERVICE A bit of a wait considering there was no one else in line but myself. Not sure what the deal with that is, really. PRICE Despite anything I’ve said above that could be viewed as negative, the only overwhelming deal-breaker for me is both price and serving size… For a narrow(yet long) felafel wrap and a drink at King Kabob it was over ten bucks, automatically razing this establishment’s reputation down to a single star. Now. for a dry felafel wrap that long and skinny(and with average taste, mind you), you now expect me to pay over ten bucks again? Try giving me some fries or at least something to go with it! Think again, there King Kabob. Any intelligent Rhode Island resident understands that East Side Pockets is a time-tested establishment with awesome food and satisfying meals. Go there. It’s the best Middle Eastern gig in Rhode Island for the money, as well as the experience.

Really delicious food, though a bit expensive for what you get. the only reason this place didn’t get five stars was the nice, but odd, girl behind the counter. After receiving our food she stood right near the part of the counter where our table was, and we felt like we were being watched. She interacted kindly with our four year old but then proceeded to change the TV to a movie not appropriate for her. We were the only ones in there, so shutting it off or switching to a kids show might have been better customer service. But again, she wasn’t rude, and the food was great.

If I had a dollar for every time that I walked by this place and thought, «hey, I need to go here,» … then I would have, um, a lot of dollars. FINALLY tried King Kabobs and I will tell you, that it was very good. Really liked my chicken falafel pita with all the fixin’s. Falafel was perfect… chicken had a little crunch to it.(Another reviewer commented on the crunchy chicken. I thought it was good, I am pretty sure this is just how they prepare it.) My compadres ordered the lamb kabob dinner and chicken kabob dinner. Portions were big. Cons: A little pricey for lunch. Kinda had a funny smell inside. I don’t know why, but I found the menu confusing. And East Side Pockets over on Thayer still wins my heart. Tip: The Aryan yogurt drink they have is good… kinda like kefir, but it’s salty.

I don’t think I’ll go back here despite the convenient location. I got the lamb kabob wrap. The woman at the counter asked how I wanted my meat cooked so I said medium(normally I’m a medium rare girl but it was my first time here and I decided to be cautious). I was sort of pleasantly surprised because at most«fast food» places they won’t ask you how you want your meat cooked. Except, when I took a bite I realized that the lamb was rare, REALLY rare. I don’t know why she bothered asking. The toppings were mediocre and somewhat limited and the woman in charge kept yelling at the two younger kids working there who appeared to be new. Not a very pleasant experience.

I promised that I would be honest with my reviews so here it goes. This was my first time at King Kabobs. I went for lunch with a friend and have to say it was the worst chicken falafel wrap I have ever had! Maybe I just hit it on a bad day but the chicken was so dried out that it crunched(and no it was not the falafel, that was actually good) it was more like jerky! The bread(wrap) was stale and crumbled as I attempted to eat it. Very disappointing. Next time I will take the extra time and head to Thayer St when I have a craving for Greek/Mediterranean food. On a plus side it was very clean inside and the wait staff were friendly and pleasant(hence the two stars)

I don’t know if they were having a bad night… but my first experience with delivery from King Kabobs was lousy. Every once in a while a guy gets lazy and wants delivery. That guy is usually not me but after a particularly long and crappy day I ordered some pretty basic things and had high hopes for a tasty meal delivered right to my apartment. What I got was a fail in nearly every way. Falafel: extraordinarily dry. I needed a gulp of water just to get it down. I must admit the the tahini sauce was pretty good. And the Lamb Kabob. Puny, mostly dry chunklets of overcooked meat on a bed of a rice. The small side of salad and pita, along with some hummus was OK. I was borderline 1 star on this experience but going with two until I give them another chance. I’m not particularly looking forward to my next experience considering I can get to East Side Pockets and get really good take out… but like I said, delivery sure is nice some evenings.

In a word, awesome! Authentic lamb dishes and the entrees are big enough to share. They come hummus and a large pita wrap. The owners are really nice and have given my toddler a free treat every time we’ve been there. :)

Great Quick Healthier Delivery Option! a little bit on the pricey side for the Wraps but the entrees are priced right and plentiful. Try the mixed grill entrée and you will have two solid meals for thirteen change. Also the tabouleh is on point! They also deliver till 2 most nights.

I missed Mr. Pocket ever since I was greeted by a locked door in December 2010… I kept coming back but every time the door was locked and the place was dark. I gave up all hope. On my recent visit to Providence, I saw a new sign and bright lights inside. I went in and ordered my usual fare… Chicken+Beef Shawarma… and it was just as good if not better than Mr. Pocket used to make. The new owners were friendly and the place is clean. Since that first visit, I’ve ordered delivery and the order usually arrives in 25 minutes or less. They take delivery orders until 2:00AM… which you just can’t beat! Highly recommended!

All I can say is this is definitely not a replacement for Mr.Pocket. All of their«pockets» only come with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles as a standard. Anything else is considered extra like hummus, tabbouleh etc. which to me has always been included at any middle eastern/Syrian sandwich shop. They don’t offer any lunch specials like Mr. Pocket did($ 5 for a wrap and can of soda!) we ordered there all the time but I guess maybe that’s why they got replaced. They told me «everything on the menu is considered a special since it’s all made daily». Ummm??? Not to mention the pockets were very bland, flimsy and pricey for the little that is actually in the wrap :( Guess I’l lbe getting my kabob wrap elsewhere.

If you felt a pang of regret when Mr. Pocket closed, the twinge of dread for the cross-town trip to get to East Side Pockets to get your pita on, and the general dismay that there is a distinct lack of Middle Eastern flavor on the West End, dry those eyes. In the very spot that was Mr. Pocket now sits King Kabobs. King Kabobs boasts a much brighter and more distinctive outside and interior, welcoming and appetite inducing, with pictures of their food as well as Lebanese landmarks on the warm red and yellow walls. With the grill going and the door open, it was a bit warm temperature-wise, but they were doing a fine job of abating the heat with a 3-foot wide fan. Their menu consists of lots of tasty items from their grill, from buffalo chicken to more traditional choices like marinated lamb, steak tips, or shrimp, and kufta kabobs. Falafel, grape leaf, kibbeh ball, and lentil and rice dinners. There is even a «Beef Gyro Meat Dinner» served on a bed of rice with tzatziki. Salads like tabbouleh and fattoush, as well as salads made with anything from their grill section. Bakalava for dessert, as well as rice and Grapenut puddings! Their triple chocolate chip cookies were definitely homemade and looked delicious. We came for the pitas. Again, there were American choices like cheeseburger, tuna, steak and cheese, and buffalo chicken pockets amongst the more traditional offerings like falafel, lamb, and kufta. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed his Lamb Shish Kabob pocket, a steal at $ 7.25. I nabbed a Kufta Kabob pocket for $ 6.75. I told the cook, who was smiley and pleasant, to make them the way he would want them. The results were white pitas(there is also a choice of wheat), rolled up with hummus, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, and topped with my two kufta kabobs and my boyfriend’s lamb kabob, both of which were grilled while we waited. As their menu states, they are torpedo sized. A really, really good sandwich. The meat was tasty and well seasoned, and the flavors were really well balanced. Though I might sub out the hummus in favor of tzatziki next time if they’ll allow it. With the quality of service we received here, I doubt it will be an issue. The verdict: Definitely a new favorite for those(frequent) times when we just can’t bear the trip across town and down Thayer, the fight for parking, and the(however well-deserved) long lines at East Side Pocket. Tip: There is both a vegetarian wrap and a vegetarian dinner option on the menu. You know you are in the right place when you can add extra garlic for $.50! Edit: Forgot to add — King Kabobs delivers for free and is open until 2 a.m.
