I was up visiting my son and he wanted sushi so we stopped in. The service was decent and décor just okay. We liked the sushi — had the Peking Ravioli, Philly Roll, Orange Dragon Roll and the Godzilla Roll. The rolls were fairly large for the prices. I’d definitely come back to try more.

The short of it: I have only had their combos. When looking for that American-Chinese food experience by way of Orange Chicken or General Tso’s Chicken, then this is a good decision. It also happens to be a dollar cheaper than a competitor. I don’t get stomach aches from their food. I rarely get the sleepy brain fog(like I do when it has msg in it, therefore I suspect we are good here). They have a variety of rice options(white, spicy fried, sticky, or lo mein) as well as side options. The long of it: I’ve ordered a few times from them and I really like how fast my food is ready for pickup. Yep, «See you in 10 minutes» is definitely what I want to hear when I am headed home, famished. I’ve never had their traditional food here. I think it is decent though. I personally use this as my american-chinese food combo time! Orange or General Tso Chicken, with white rice — mainly because I like the balance it gives the intensity of the entrée, and crab ragoons — oh, wait a minute, I think they call these«cheese wontons»(fair, there’s no actual crab in it anyway). I rate their food well though, seriously, I haven’t had any weird food symptoms from their food. I don’t have any particular allergies, but my body system is fairly sensitive, so if there was msg in it I would really know. Oh, and I love that they always put chopsticks in the bag for me! Also, maybe it is just because I am away from home and my boyfriend left the country, but I love the white napkin they put in the bag instead of a brown commercial on. Maybe they are just saving a dollar, but I feel almost like someones mom put a lunch together for me!

Overpriced, spotty service, food was below average. There are better choices on Thayer.

It is a very pleasant place to sit in, decorated as a kind of a US diner with Chinese motives. They offer special lunch rates throughout the week, including on Sunday, but they are only slightly cheaper than the normal rates, which are quite reasonable themselves. The waitress was nice and helpful, but rounded up the bill instead of giving me the correct change and let me determine the tip. The food was very good, and there are many vegetarian and vegan options. The vegetable spring roll was so great, and I could not finish it. The portions are very generous and can be shared by two people. All in all, it is quite a recommended restaurant.

Since moving to the Providence area, I’ve ordered delivery from Shanghai a few times and thought it was about time I left a review! My first experience was ordering sushi, which unfortunately was not great. It was very bland to me and considering the price of some of the rolls, I would pass on the sushi. But the combination meals are where it’s at! My favorite is the General Tso’s with sticky rice and Crab Rangoon’s. So much food at such a good price! You can also get veggie Lo Mein or chicken fingers as some other side options which is nice. Also their spicy fried rice is absolutely delicious. Highly recommend giving it a try. I’ve only ever ordered delivery via Foodler but our food has consistently arrived hot & fresh. Shanghai is certainly my go-to place for delicious Chinese food.

This is going to be an oddly specific review, the 5 stars are really based on two appetizers alone, but they are so damn perfect I can’t help myself. The pan seared Peking ravioli(I think that’s what they call them, if you say pork dumplings they’ll know what you mean) are simply the best I’ve ever had. Many times when I order this dish at other establishments the wrap is thin and barely cooked, the inside is light beige and full of cabbage. This place is doughy and decadent, the meat is JUSTMEAT and is juicy and rich and everything you could ever want in an appetizer that you know is bad for you but tastes better than anything else in the world. They also have the best crab rangoons in providence. The sushi is good, but these beyond amazing classic American Chinese appetizers are what keep me coming back for more.

My review is solely based off of my delivery experience. Sushi is indefinitely one of my favorite types of food, so I’ve had my fair share of sushi from various places– from upscale sushi restaurants abroad to mediocre buffet sushi. I was craving sushi on a lazy day so I decided to try out Shanghai for delivery. I got one of their lunch specials, the Maki San Fran Sushi combo. This combo consisted of a California roll, tuna roll, and salmon scallion roll. The first thing I noticed upon opening the takeout box was that the tuna was a deep purple color which I was not accustomed to seeing. This made me nervous, as most tuna is a deep red. I’m not sure what this could have indicated. The tuna also had a gritty texture, most likely indicating it was not sliced correctly. The salmon scallion roll was lacking– barely any visible scallions and was pretty much just a salmon roll. The last roll, the California roll, was lazily wrapped and was not filled evenly throughout. I also must note that the layer of rice on the outside was not completely even, and the rice grains seemed to be broken, but this may be a result of mixing the rice with a vinegar as sushi usually calls for. This was my first experience with Shanghai. The pricing was pretty good– $ 19 for three rolls, but I won’t be ordering sushi from here again. There are other places where I could get better quality sushi rolls for the same price, give or take a dollar or two.

I used to come here years ago and loved it. I just went last night again and the waitress was rude to say the least. I can’t tell how many times I said thank you and tried to be polite and she was less than interested in reciprocating my kindness. I used to be a waitress so I understand what it’s like therefore I try and be an easy, polite customer but wow! She literally acted like she didn’t even like her job. All she cared about was socializing at the bar. It’s too bad that such a beautiful place’s atmosphere can be ruined by the bad attitude of your server.

Had lunch there on Sunday. There was only one server on and she seemed pretty busy. It was hard for her to properly service each table. I got the general tso’s tofu and it was pretty amazing! I would def go here again. They have tons of options for both meat eaters and non meat eaters. Yum!

This place is hit and miss. It has such a large menu and constant crowd that there are a number of dishes that vary in quality depending on how long they have been using the same cooking oil. I have found that there are a number of dishes that are safe, though. I recommend the pork fried rice, the shrimp curry, the general tso’s chicken, and any veggie dish. The staff is great.

When it comes to chinese takeout and delivery on the East Side, Shanghai is SOLID. It’s overly greasy at times but totally hits the spot for that lo mien or fried rice craving. Their General Tso Tofu is my usual go-to — usually I don’t like when tofu is a little raw-textured if you know what I mean but somehow Shanghai gets away with it. I wish their sauce was spicier though. And that it came with those really hot small peppers. It’s a little too sweet. But no matter. Some places don’t have much in the way of vegetarian options so I can’t really complain. What else, what else. I’ve tried their thai mussels and those are pretty awesome. When I dine in, I usually sit at the bar and the service is great too. The bar is located very very close to the kitchen so the food always comes out fast and piping hot. The delivery has always been on time and the delivery dudes have always been super courteous. It’s a little pricey for chinese food but I’d rather pay more for something that tastes remotely like NYC chinese food than pay less for orange rice with frozen carrots and peas in it that tastes like Alpo dog food, which is most of the Chinese food I’ve tried in the area that is not Shanghai or Kings Garden in Cranston. And, anyway, they’re on Thayer Street so you’re paying for both the location and the convenience at that point. You’re not going to feel good about yourself after eating it but in my opinion that’s sort of the point. Yeah it could be a little less greasy but it hits the spot and will satiate the craving.

The atmosphere is fantastic. Love the lanterns that hang from the ceilings as they really add a nice cultural, Asian touch. A red curtain that separates the take-out portion from the dining area also adds to the cultural feel at Shanghai. Rarely do you find a restaurant that’s on a second floor. It seems so simple, but I love having a slightly higher view of Thayer Street. It’s a cool sight while intimate seating near the windows makes for a cute dinner date. Dim lighting adds another romantic element contributing to this establishment’s charm. Food note: Be aware you can only order one type of sushi for dinner rather than having a variety of pieces on your plate. We wanted a mix of some salmon and spicy tuna. The waiter claimed we couldn’t do that, this option is only available for lunch. So we ended up ordering two separate dishes, 9 pieces of salmon and 9 of the spicy tuna. Wish we could have split the plate as we originally requested. There was a generous amount of General Tso’s chicken, but again another problem. It didn’t come with rice or broccoli, that had to be ordered on the side. All in all, the atmosphere is cozy and food is delicious — try this place out.

We love Chinese food and this restaurant is excellent. It’s small so you may have to wait but it’s worth it. Every time we come here, the food is great and service is fast. I highly recommend it.

I thought I’d update my review. I’ve been coming to Shanghai for 5 years now. The food quality is amazing. I’ve recently strayed from the usual sushi for some appetizers that caught my eye. We tried the chicken lettuce wraps and the spicy shrimp lettuce wraps. They are both amazing. They come with a spicy sauce. The Spicy Scallop roll is still the best thing hands down. We actually got two last time we went because we love it so much. The second best thing would be the Oceans 11 Roll. It’s a fried shrimp tempura roll. Tonight we tried their margarita, in a bowl! It was really delicious and it’s always fun to drink out of a bowl with a fun colored straw. We will continue to come back here for the great food, drinks, and friendly service!

You regret it as you’re thinking about it, as you’re ordering it, and especially as you’re eating it. It doesn’t taste anything like mom’s cooking, it’s definitely not good for you, and it’s of questionable cleanliness, but sometimes it’s exactly what you need. Haven’t eaten in at the restaurant in years, but take-out has definitely happened, especially when I lived closer. If you have a craving for chicken wings around Thayer, this — oddly enough — is your place. Their hot and sour soup isn’t bad and fills you with warmth and the Shanghai spicy lo mein is a greasy, guilty pleasure. Take it for what it is.

No matter what I order, every time I order from Shanghai the food tastes strange. It’s either too salty or too greasy and it never fails to make me sick within 1 – 2 hours. The last item item I bought was a lettuce wrap with shrimp … and it tasted like a salt lick. I personally will not be back & I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else.

This place is simply the best… The service is impeccable, the ambience is fabulous. The food is so delicious no matter what it is you order. Whether you order sushi or a Pu Pu platter or anything in between I must say everything on their menu is scrumptious! The scorpion bowls are to die for… So so so good!!! There’s not one negative thing I can think to say about this place. The prices are a tad bit high but let me tell you it is so worth it‼‼‼‼

This restaurant makes the best Chinese food in U. S as far as I know! but the atmosphere is more like a bar so the light isn’t quite bright unless you sit by the window. Me and my friends ordered Chicken, Shrimp and Steak for $ 55.68 The dishes are big and worth price.

I cannot, comment on the food here as I have actually never ordered food. It is usually a very busy place, so how terrible can it be? I’ve been here exclusively for drinks, particularly the scorpion bowl. It’s tasty, always and potent… Exactly why we drink them. They also have a rather large drink menu with some flare. While the lanterns hanging from the ceiling are nice, the service is not. In fact, the service is bad. The waitresses and bartender would rather stand around complaining to one another than helping customers. Bad enough to get 2 stars bad.

I cannot give a good review to a restaurant that refuses to acknowledge my dietary needs. I’m not super picky, but I am allergic to gluten. Because I’ve been treated well inside the restaurant in the past, I tried ordering lunch from them on three separate occasions. On all three occasions, they brought me salad covered in panko(bread crumbs) and didn’t provide the gluten free soy sauce packets that I asked for(which they definitely have since I got them in store). Despite speaking on the phone with them, they still don’t get it right. My most recent time, it took almost two hours for a lunch delivery as well. I also got sick from their food twice, but assumed it had to be otherwise, because surely a great restaurant like Shanghai wouldn’t serve bad sushi, right??? Right??? They have lovely décor, but I’ll just bring my business to a more conscientious restaurant.
