We were meeting with friends who seemed more like family and the Mother Hen who lives in Flushing suggested shabu-shabu. Of course, I immediately hit Unilocal and found shabu shabu restaurants with wonderful reviews especially by friends like Wing L so I was stoked to try the restaurants they recommended. BLH was chosen by Mother Hen because it was a block from where she lived. It turned out to be a great choice as they have a parking lot at the back and it saved me the stress of going to the municipal parking lot, parking there and then getting a $ 115 ticket because there are special designated spots and I happened to park in one that had no sign on it etc. Just remembering it makes me all angry again and robs me of my Christmas joy. Breathe… So we entered the restaurant from the parking lot and we were delighted to see a clean and well-decorated restaurant. We chose seafood and beef shabu shabu and Mother Hen was the one who mixed the sauces for us. We were also given a huge bowl with vegetables, noodles, egg and tofu. They brought two huge pots of broth, lit up the stove and voila, we were in shabu shabu paradise! There is something in shabu shabu that fosters community in the whole ceremony of dunking everything and spooning it out. The sirloin were cut in slivers and cooked as soon as you dunk it and the broth was flavorful but not salty. The seafood platter included crab, shrimps and scallops among others. We definitely had a wonderful meal and I can’t wait to be back especially this long winter. :-)
