Sun’s café is the last place you’d expect to find amazing sushi. I met up with a buddy here as it was the halfway point, driving through vineyards and losing cell service I was confused. I came up on a humble home turned restaurant which gave it a cozy feel. I ordered three rolls of sushi (I can’t remember the names) and they were made to perfection. Living in Virginia Beach you’d think the quality of fish would trump this «mom and pop» restaurant, but it absolutely did not. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and quality of food received at Sun’s.

Don’t judge a book by its cover folks! If you want fantastic sushi this rivals the best of them and I consider myself somewhat of a sushi snob. My friend and I had the Unagi roll, Hawaiian Volcano, Shogun roll, and Wasabi roll and each bite was scrumptious! If you are passing through you must try.

We were wine tasting on the way back from Newport News and found this gem for lunch! Please don’t be put off by the exterior or interior… This is the epitome of hole in the wall with excellent food! We tried a sushi roll as well as a couple items from their extensive home cookin menu. Definitely worth a detour off 64 or along good wine tasting route.

I’ll admit walking up to Sun’s Café, I thought it was looking a little run down and it definitely had an old country store look going. But don’t let that detour you from taking part. I can only speak for what I had but the breakfast was very good! I had three pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns, with orange juice that all cost me a little less than the same at IHOP. It looked just like a meal at IHOP and tested just as good! Nice place, great breakfast!

This is our second visit there. Once about 5 years ago when they first opened and thought we would try again. Had the country fried steak special with instance mashed potatoes and Velveeta Mac and cheese. Wife had the hamburger steak which consist of a store bought ¼ burger cooked. Same potatoes and cheese. We both had a salad which was pitiful is all I can say. Did include a packet of blue cheese dressing. Institutional is a good way to but my meal. Like you had in the school cafeteria when you were young on plastic plates. Maybe in another 5 years. And I live 2 miles from there.

Just had sushi at Suns Café. It was excellent! We were a little skeptical about whether sushi in New Kent would be good, but man did she deliver!!! Check it out!
