There is NO reason 1 plate arrived 20 minutes before the other 2 plates, in which we are still waiting for two more meals. This is my first and last time coming here. It smells like the bathroom in the entire place.

I got the bbq turkey legs. They are more like bake with bbq sauce. They were not big at all, I was still hungry afterwards. The sides I had was fried cabbage/peas(Great), and mac&cheese(dry&some of the noodles weren’t cooked all the way). My wife had the jerk tilapia. She said the tilapia was dry with no seasonings but she like the jerk sauce. for sides She had their sweet&buttery cornbread with cabbage.

I have had my best oxtail experience in this place. Seasoned to perfection with a nice lil spicy kick. I ordered a sex on the beach and it was perfect. I can’t wait to come back to Raleigh to have dinner at this place.

The food is good when it’s available. Our first choice was chicken and waffles but, the waffle machine was broken. The second choice was curry chicken but we were told it would be awhile before it would be ready and was recommended to choose something else. We finally got our order and the collards were awesome. The wings and turkey wings, mac and cheese were great too. Our waitress was pleasant but, she disappeared too long and I needed water. I finally got water. Lastly, the customer service was lacking from the owner who walked in while we were there and didn’t greet the customers who were patronizing his business. Most owners of restaurants meet and greet and say thank you for coming and I hope you enjoy your meal. Friendliness and customer service goes along way when you’re a business owner.

I do not like the way that Starbar is ran and set up. It is small and there is no where to sit. The drinks that they served were watered down and the food was mediocre at best. I would never go here ever again and I don’t recommend it for anyone else.

Horrible spot. The music was way too lounge and nobody was dancing. Everyone was really stuck up and it was not an enjoyable experience. $ 8 for a drink that’s ridiculous! Beware don’t go!

WOW! I don’t even know where to begin. It’s a lounge/bar with relaxing music. The atmosphere is wonderful, the food was fantastic(I had Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, cornbread, and collards), and for all you get the prices aren’t bad at all! They have a very nice selection of liquor and our waitress was great! We will definitely be back… hopefully soon!

Visited this restaurant/night club strictly looking for some good soul food and that is exactly what we got! Had smothered pork chops, collard greens, mac n cheese, and potato salad with sweet tea and side of sweet cornbread. The food was seasoned to southern perfection. This is one of those meals where you know you are gonna have to do lots of extra cardio to work off but it is every bit worth it. Don’t let the night club surroundings scare you away because this place serves up some real deal southern cuisine. They even have Kool Aid on the menu! Nuff said.

Loud… Corny atmosphere. I called to order take out. The music/noise in the background was so loud that the person taking the order could not hear me. Nope. I’ll never deal with Star Bar.

Food is just like mama would make. Totally melt in your mouth and have you coming back for more. I’m glad they are a bit of a drive for me otherwise I would be in trouble. The only complaint is the OBNOXIOUSLYLOUDMUSIC. I understand this is a nightclub but during day hours when people are dinning it would be nice to hear and carry on a conversation. Totally 5 star food but the music is that LOUDANDANNOYING that I am only giving it 2 stars!

Food is straight but music is too loud to have a conversation. Mgmt sd she cant do anything about it and that everyone else comes here because they like it… obviously she doesnt care about all of her customers, just some.

I wrote a review right after my visit here. I’m not sure what happened. I had a friend that visited from MD and we decided to stop here for dinner. He ordered some type of shrimp and slaw dish that was in a jerk sauce. It was really good. I ordered a fish dinner. Not a good choice! The fish smelled bad. Like it was… Err… BAD! I mentioned this to the waitress. She laughed and said others had complained the fish tasted spoiled. I just gave her the silent blank stare(with crickets in the background for effect, of course). What in the world? Why would the chef or cook or what he was use fish that people clearly had complaints regarding the freshness. Unreal. I will not be returning. If the staff will serve fish that is clearly not fresh, I have to stay away due to their lack of common sense. What else are they doing that is disgusting?

I would recommend to the management staff to hire a consultant when hosting a big event such as the«Election Day Soirée». The service me and my friends received was poor due to the fact, there was limited seating actually for dining and no way to differentiate the patrons that were actually dining versus who was just sitting down to watch the Election results. There should have been someone in the management staff to direct and separate the two and there should have been room to accommodate both. We waited for two hours only to never been seated. The hostess in the front was useless. She never called our names to be seated, never followed-up with us. And to make matters worse, the live band and its singers would have drowned out any names from being called, so go figure! Was that on purpose? In any rate, I am a huge supporter of African American owned businesses however, there seems to be quite an absence of African American establishments that are run with a business mind. Anyone can«start» and«open» a business but one that is sustainable and successful, must be ran with a business sense. At the end of the day, it’s not just about making money. Sustaining customers, especially in this day and age where there are limited incomes/entertainment budgets, etc., should be a priority. With that being said, I would never patronize this establishment nor refer anyone. For soul food, I rather travel to Winston Salem and dine at the Nitty Gritty where the food is awesome and customer service is impeccable or continue to patronize the services of the restaurant establishments in Downtown Raleigh(Poole’s Diner, the Big E, Oro, The Busy Bee, etc.). Where you will never leave out hungry or unsatisfied!

Wandered into here recently in the mood for a little adventure and wanting to try something different. Must say that I came away very impressed! The atmosphere of this place is part restaurant /lounge /club /social /bar. To be honest, it comes off a bit as though the owner doesn’t know what kind of place they want it to be, but it still works within the space that they have and is able to provide a very enjoyable experience. The service was very friendly and attentive, which given that there was a live soul singer and band playing, was all the more impressive because it went way beyond my normal expectations from similar venues. Upon entrance, we were told there would be a 15 minute wait to sit down, but it ended up being less than 10. At first, we were going to be seated at a table for two right in front of a large speaker. I asked if we could move to a table a bit further away, and was kindly escorted to a four-person table, which given it was a Saturday night and they were somewhat busy, was a very nice gesture on their part. The live music was fantastic, if only a bit too loud. I don’t really think the speakers needed to be cranked up to 11 for such a small space, but on the plus side, it gives a guy an excuse to get closer to his date. The food was delicious. I had the Shrimp and Grits others have recommended on here, and can’t say I was disappointed. Truly some of the best shrimp and grits I have ever had… and I grew up in New Orleans and these tasted just like what I grew up with! My girlfriend had the Curry Shrimp, which was also very tasty and aromatic. It was a bit spicy for her taste, but she still really enjoyed it and finished her plate, so no real complaints there. The only real issues I had with this place is that I felt the mixed drinks were a bit overpriced(though well made and tasty), and that they were out of most of the beers on their very small beer list. Basically all they had were American macro-brews and Heineken. When you call yourself a soul-food /Caribbean restaurant, the least I would expect is some local beers and Red Stripe to be in stock. Again, this wasn’t a huge deal, but it did detract slightly from the overall experience. I also was approached at my table by a large man, who looked really out of place inside this restaurant based on his demeanor and dress, who I think was either trying to sell me something possibly illegal or asking for money. This is where having the music being cranked up to 11 came in handy, as I was able to act like I didn’t really understand what he was saying and after a prolonged trial of asking him to leave our table, he finally relented. Although I don’t really blame the restaurant on this, I have to mention it because it was pretty obvious to see that something odd was going on, and in most other places I would expect management to have escorted him out so that he would stop bothering customers(it wasn’t only us). I would definitely go back here again if I am in the Knightdale area. Especially if the music is going to be as enlightening to the ears as it was that night.

The absolute best shrimp and grits I have had in the triangle. PERIOD The urban champagne was so filled with sugar my son had to stop in the middle of the street and go into a virtual sugar coma. The cornbread was very good… but honestly I like all types of cornbread as long as it is moist. The prices are perfect for the product. Thanks for getting it RIGHT!!! I will be back …

Dear Raleigh Unilocalers: Be amazed that I went to a new locally owned business and reviewed it first! Having received an email with a menu with items such as fish and spaghetti, chicken and waffle, and shrimp, turkey wings, porkchops, chicken, and/or fish with grits. .. well I had to give it a try. The business has been open for about three weeks. I arrived for lunch around 11 a.m. — and I was THE lunch customer! I ordered the smothered chicken and grits — fried white meat chicken over grits with gravy. Any southerner knows you have to do grits rights, and this place nailed it! No little cup of grits — it covered the plate and were done perfectly. The chicken was tender and juicy. Wonderful presentation as well on a red squared plate. The sweet iced tea was made from some concentrate — you could tell it wasn’t brewed tea. The serving time was about 30 minutes. I would suggest that if they want to have a steady lunch business they may want to have a simplified lunch menu with fewer choices so folks can get in and out on their lunch hours. Lovely facility. Lots of red and black in the design. Second floor has VIP booths and another bar with an aquarium. The lounge I believe is open after 10 pm on weekends.
