Studio J – A Salon by Jay Felton

Jay was awesome! His studio was so comfortable and he obviously knew what he was doing. It is one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had. Make sure you go to the right address though: 100 Wind Chime Ct. (Google lists an old address)

For the 1^st time since I left Boston over a year ago and moved to NC, this is the first haircut I’ve loved! Jay was wonderful. He really knows his stuff. A real pro and a real nice guy too. So is Heath at the front desk! I’d been to many hair stylists since I moved here, and not one of them got the cut I wanted right — and it took some of the 3 cuts before it even looked decent. Jay got it right the very first time… he knows hair and knows how to fit it to your face. Wonderful. I tell everyone I know about Jay’s Salon… I feel very comfortable there and relaxed, knowing I won’t be leaving there dissatisfied. All I have is a happy face when I leave there. My hair comes out looking good every day after my cut for 5 weeks and that only happens with a perfect cut and style. I just love Jay!!!

Atmosphere is great — though the building is a little worse for wear (elevator wasn’t working, stairs dark and dusty), the salon itself is bright, open, and clean. I went on a weekday morning, so it was nice and peaceful inside.
My haircut itself was fantastic — I highly recommend Jay for curly hair. He was professional and friendly, careful and meticulous while working with my hair. He definitely knows what he’s doing when it comes to textured hair. (Another plus — I’m not really a talker during haircuts, so I was appreciative that he just let me be and relax during the process) I was really, really pleased with how my cut turned out.
Pricing was very fair and comparable to other salons in the area — I paid $ 55 pre-​tip for a haircut for long, thick, and curly hair. Definitely would recommend Jay and will be sure to return when back in the area.

Jay is absolutely incredible. I get compliments on my hair nearly every time I go out. For the first time in my life I love my curly hair!

I came here last fall from a Unilocal deal and had such a great experience. Jay had never met me before, but heard what I was looking for in highlights and a cut and nailed it. The color was spot on and the cut was great. I didn’t love the style in the salon but I usually don’t go for the floofy round brush salon look. Most importantly to me the color was amazing. It’s always kind of a gamble when you go to someone new and when its a success it feels like you hit the jack pot :)!
I totally loved speaking with Jay too! Such a wealth of information and experience. I felt really comfortable in his salon and would go back again in a heart beat, if I was still living in the area. Definitely recommend and wish I could make this place my salon go to every time!
P. S. I was prompted to review Studio J because I was on Unilocal reviewing another business. I think there was an active link because of the Unilocal deal that i got here. Anyway, I just posted and then saw Chase’s remark! Lol, I’m real :) I promise:). I had a really great experience here!

I received a phone call from the owner which was appreciated, he offered to try and fix it, but honestly at this point I am not comfortable going back to let Irene or Jay touch my hair — for his efforts in giving some customer service I went ahead and bumped my 1 star review to a three star — on that note maybe it would work for someone else.

Finally, a great cut and style at a fair price! I am so happy to have found Studio J. I have fine hair and had been vacillating from long to short and everything in between in search of a versatile and flattering look. Jay seemed to instinctively know exactly what I wanted and what would work best with my hair. He listened and didn’t go off in another direction and asked questions along the way to make sure we were on the same page. For years I would never plan anything after my hair appointment because I was never confident on what I would leave looking like. Even when I’ve had a decent cut elsewhere, I always had to «re-​style» before I could tell if it was good or bad. I left Studio J thinking I really should go somewhere because my hair looks great. Customer service and attention to detail is excellent. My only concern about making this recommendation is that he’ll get too busy for me ;) Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Great place! I’ve had my hair done by both Jay & Irene, and it turns out fantastic every time. We moved but I continue to get my hair done here. I’d recommend it :)

Irene has done magic with my hair — the highlights are just what I want and I receive many compliments on the cut and the color. She understands how my hair wants to be styled and I don’t have to fight each morning to get my hair under control. The cut frames my face and is easy for me to work with each morning. Thanks Irene!

I was looking for somewhere new, saw the Unilocal deal, and I’m glad I bought it! A hidden gem– great magazine selection, everyone is nice, and Jay did a great job on my highlights and trim. I recommend this salon, worth checking out!

Let me start by saying that i hate giving bad reviews. i dont like hurting people’s feelings but ultimatley I’m the one who has to live with a bad haircut. I asked for a trim and explained that I have been growing my hair and like it long. All of the sudden I was given layers, tons of layers. Jay did not talk to me and ask me if i wanted layers, he just did it. In fact, he didn’t really talk at all, except to his assistant, which i thought was weird. When I asked him why he was cutting my hair so short, he started talking to me about curly hair and how it needs special layers, and insisting that it wasn’t short. Bythen it was too late. Now my hair looks very short and poufy, not what i wanted to say the least. Please listen to your clients, thanks.

If you have curly hair you know how frustrating it can be to find the right salon. Jay fixed my messed-​up do without hesitation and the staff was very nice and friendly.
I also got a professional quality wax… all at an excellent value– $ 25 for the lip/​eyebrow wax and a full wash, cut, and style for $ 40. I made my next appointment on the spot, which I never do. :)

Jay absolutely nailed the look I was going for. I wanted some subtle blonde ombré-​style highlights and he did a great job. I got a lot of compliments when I went out that night and will definitely be back. The service was very fairly priced and Jay took his time to do a really awesome job. I’m extremely happy with my hair and will definitely be returning!

I am very picky about my hair, When comes to highlight/​color, I always ask not be brassy or coppery. Studio J Salon was highly recommended to me by my boss. I have been getting my hair done with Jay (owner) since 2012; He always does a WONDERFUL job with my highlights, color and hair cut! He is VERY knowledgeable and takes a great care and time with my hair; I get lots of compliments on my hair!!! My hair looks good and feels great! love it!
I definitely recommend this salon to all my friends and to anybody who’s looking for high quality service!

I have finally found the hair salon I’ve been looking for! I’m a huge fan and will be a client for as long as Jay will have me! To all of you out there with curly hair who are so sick of stylists not having a clue what to do for you, stop searching and call this place.
I got highlights and a cut this past weekend and love how everything turned out. The color is amazing and is exactly what I wanted. Jay knew right from the beginning the type of look I was trying to describe and got it just right. It was like a «Say No More, I’ve Got This» vibe from him that put me at ease, like he’d been doing my hair for years! And as for the cut, he has a certain way of cutting these unique layers for curly hair that make it look wonderful! It has been incredibly easy to style.
Beyond the hair, all the small things that also make a huge difference were just as appealing! Heath handles everything at the front, and he was amazingly helpful in setting up the appointment, making sure things were fine the day of, and scheduling my next appointment. When you arrive, they’ll offer coffee, wine, whatever, and of course, great music is playing the whole time. The salon itself is also super cute and they have fabulous artwork throughout, making it totally adorable.
Just a note that due to no fault of their own on the particular day I was there, the hot water supply for the building was well, not hot at all! Jay, Heath, and Irene (the other stylist there) all took the time to actually heat cold water up just for my rinse and shampoo so I wouldn’t have to deal with cold water. Talk about going above and beyond! They didn’t have to, but they did. They’re all fabulous, and I can’t say enough wonderful things. I wish them so much success there!
I’ve already told friends and co-​workers this is the next salon for them, no question, and I can’t wait for my next appointment!

Fantastic stylist, great salon, and wonderful deals! I rarely get exactly what I want from a salon appointment, but Jay worked with me to get the color and style I wanted.
I was in town on business, and desperately needed to update my highlights. I wanted: an affordable solution to cover grown out blonde highlights from July, to go back to brunette but keep it warm for winter, and to get a color that would still look great months after it was done. Jay suggested: brunette lowlights on top of the blonde (as opposed to all-​over color, which saved me money!), a warm chestnut instead of redbrown, and a Redken demi-​perm color that would last. The results are fantastic: the brunette blends with my natural color and the re-​highlighted blonde became a warm red, giving me all over brunette coverage with some blonde highlight and red lowlights — and all from one appointment! Thank you Jay, I couldn’t be happier.
I also enjoyed my time with Jay — he is kind, friendly, and welcoming. He gave me a glass of red wine and talked with me about my job and the recent election. The salon was warm and inviting, the Redken products smell great. It was exactly the pampering I needed at the end of a long business trip.
I also got a free travel size mousse for liking their facebook page, and $ 20 off my color from their November promotion! I recommend taking advantage this wonderful deal!

I’m new in town, so when I saw a Unilocal coupon for a stylist near my office, I jumped on it. And I’m so glad I did! Loved Jay, love my cut and color. .. nice folks there, too. I felt like I had 100% of his attention, which is a rarity these days. He made some good suggestions, and I felt like he got what I wanted to do. I plan to recommend this place to everyone I can think of. .. as long as I can still get MY appointment! LOL

I really love this salon. Jay takes his time and does wonderful work. I never feel rushed out the door. My color is always lovely and my hair cut gets rave reviews from my friends. If you want an awesome and affordable hair cut then go to this salon!!!

The salon itself is warm, relaxing, and extremely inviting. The entire staff is friendly and accommodating. I initially found Jay through an internet coupon and he immediately became my new stylist. It’s impossible not to walk out of the salon feeling like you have friends who can’t wait to see you again.
I recently had a cut and at the salon done by Irene. She did an amazing job and all of my friends and coworkers keep complimenting me. During our initial consultation, Irene encouraged me to try something new with my hair. She was very careful not to take me out of my comfort zone and talked me through everything she was doing. I ended up happily agreeing to lose most of the length of my hair and found that it is exactly the change I didn’t know I was looking for. I voiced concern about being able to style it myself and Irene did a quick tutorial, showing me how to achieve several different looks. Before we finished, she made sure I was completely comfortable with my new hair and encouraged me to call if I had any problems — which I haven’t. I ended up purchasing products there, but I was in no way pressured to.
I returned yesterday to get a glaze put on my hair and am equally in love with the color as I am with my cut.

I’ve known Jay forever, and I’m sooooo glad he’s in the business of making women feel and look beautiful. He cuts, colors AND highlights my hair. I walk out feeling beautiful, and I’m able to recreate the look myself the next day (well almost). The style is easy to work with and the color is the best I’ve ever had. I don’t know how, but I’m able to make it 6+ weeks every time.
