Karen is a sweet, somewhat socially awkward instructor. She agreed to teach the Bradley method course to my wife and I in a private set of 3 nights of about 2.5 hours each. The majority of the time was spent telling anecdotal stories about her births. She has 8 or 9 kids and was pregnant at that time we took the class. Discussion of the actual Bradley method didn’t even begin until the second class and consisted of a short exercise where I laid on the floor while my wife read me a poem for relaxation. Often the instruction was very scattered and disorganized. She would mention she had some kind of instructional material and then futily hunt for it in the chaos that served as the classroom. The 3 positions she showed us for labor were not comfortable for me when I actually went into labor. I lasted 14 hours without an epidural, and 10 of those were after my water broke. We showed up at the hospital too early and I was only 1 cm dilated. Bradley method encourages getting to the hospital so late that an epidural is no longer an option but we failed to identify which stage of labor I was in. I’d recommend hypnobirthing instead. I’ve heard of better results.
