For the talents that John Luke has, his care is probably best when applied to earaches, stitches for minor things, aches and pains, etc. As conditions become more complicated, he seems less able to be effective and less willing to refer a patient. He’ll ask you to tell him your sexual orientation and it will be placed into your record. He’ll also ask you to state whether or not you own firearms and whether or not you have firearms in your residence. This will also be placed into your record. Your entire record is subject to subpoena(disclosure) in a whole host of legal circumstances including a divorce. Thus, you may want to be careful about what you say to him as it can be subject to disclosure to a former spouse, a current or former employer, government agencies, attorneys working for these parties, and judges. If you let him know that you already have, or are planning to self-refer(and pay for it yourself), he will probably take offense and verbally work hard to dissuade you from seeing another provider by telling you how qualified he is to treat whatever your issue is. If you follow through with the self-referral, he has a tendency to wash his hands of your care and become vindictive. He does this by refusing to provide care unless you return to him, make amends for seeing a provider without his blessing, and mending what he deems as your damaging the relationship with him. He will strenuously deny doing this but the fact that this happens is indicative of the truth. John Luke’s MAs tend to be disorganized. His written entries into your record tend to be incoherent more than occasionally. He tends to have the so-called God Complex that infects so many physicians. While he makes efforts to characterize your treatment as personal, the contents of your record as written by him will clearly demonstrate that you are merely another widget on his daily assembly line. His classic come-on shortly after the two of you are together is: «So, how can I help you today,(Sir or Madam)?» Be careful as nearly every word that henceforth comes out of your mouth he will type into your record. He’ll say things like, «(Your name), I really care about you.» The trouble with this is, when you read the written record of the encounter with you, there will be precious little to show for his declaring his caring. Instead, there will be plenty of righteous boiler plate text about you and what he really thinks(hint: It will not be consistent with his verbal statements made to you as he was typing into your record). This physician tends to be more than typically egotistical and self-confident. To the point of directly disagreeing with you and correcting you as if he is the ultimate arbiter and authority. When you say something that is correct, he generally ignores you and keeps the(fast) assembly line pace going so as to get you out of the examination room promptly. John Luke’s general approach to health is: Prescribe medications for as many conditions(real or perceived) as he can. Thoughtlessly follow conventional wisdom(aka cookie cutter medicine or cookbook medicine). Treat patients as intellectual dullards. The patient is not the customer — the payer(insurance company or government) is the customer. Because it is singularly this written record that will have total sway during peer review or litigation and those two things are what he worries and cares about the most. Dr. Luke really cares about the health and welfare of his patients. He always takes his time with me so that we can discuss any concerns I have about my physical or mental health. He reviews options, gives recommendations, listens to patient concerns and wishes, and works WITH his patients to set a game plan for improved health. He always follows up, he provides quick MyChart responses, speaks so his patient can understand without making his patient feel inferior. His comical sense of humor puts you immediately at ease and makes you feel comfortable in his presence. I’m so pleased to have opted for Dr. Luke as my Primary Care Physician. I trust him and feel safe with his expertise and the UC Davis system.
