I saw Barabara for about 7 months until early 2012. She is a calm mannered person and easy to talk to. My frustrations arose out of the direction of our sessions. I found that over time our sessions became much more about her issues and about her talking about other clients(other client’s names were never shared). It felt very unprofessional. I finally chose to stop seeing her after some remarks that did not sit well with me. On one occassion she told me about her friend in another state who runs a clinic to «help [homosexuals] get better». It felt like a VERY narrow minded and inappropriate comment from an individual in the mental health field, especially considering the context of the conversation was my significant support for the LGBTQQI community. On another occassion, upon telling her I would be running social skills groups for at risk teens in a local school, she told me that she’d worked with a similar population before. She said that I’d think it was«so funny» what their dreams are and what they think they can do with their lives. Again, it felt to me very unprofessional and disrespectful. I’m sure some wouldn’t be so bothered by these things, but they were enough for me to determine I did not want to continue to work with someone who felt that way about those things and so comfortable talking so regularly about other clients with me(again – no other client’s names were shared). As a professional in this field myself, perhaps I just expect differently from those I work with.
