Looks like a good airport to land at, especially for a county airport, but the FBO staff could probably use an attitude adjustment. The positives: Recently-paved parking lot Ramp in decent shape FBO facilities bright & modern Car(2 hrs) & hangars available The negatives: Huge pot-holes(the kind that’ll surely take out your steering linkages) in the gravel roadway to the FBO Girl at FBO with real attitude problem I visited Portage Flight Center to see if they rented airplanes — something not uncommon at small, county airports. In fact you can see imprints on their posted service board where aircraft rental prices used to be. So I asked(kindly) the woman in the office who pretty much ignored me as she surfed the pilot lounge computer when I walked into this near-deserted place, if that was the case. I also asked if she knew of any place nearby(i.e. a local pilot in the T-hangars, a nearby flying club, or maybe even the Middlefield airport just up the road). The answer I got to both questions was shrugging of the shoulders and something she mumbled imperceptibly before sticking her face back into her paperwork. Hello… Lady! Really? Did I bother you with my aviation-related question? Thanks for the no help. Anyhow I’m sure the airport is just fine for airplanes. However, pilots might find the cold, icey runway in winter a lot warmer than the FBO girl’s reception!
