Had an early dinner here last night with friends, after a concert at Bard College. The service was excellent and the restaurant itself has a cozy, casual atmosphere. The food was OK. Nothing out of the ordinary, but competently if not expertly prepared. None of us ordered the steaks; instead we had the fish, game and risotto. Perhaps the beef would have wowed us. I’d definitely return, as we all liked the atmosphere and the menu was well priced and varied. As a plus, Bard is less than 10 minutes away, so this place is a good pick to have a meal at before or after a visit to Bard.

2.5 stars. This was not a great experience, especially since we were visited from out of town. This restaurant looks upscale and definitely separates itself from the small cafes and diners that line the streets of Red Hook. We wanted to eat outside, since it was a pleasant day. We were greeted nicely and seated outside. The décor is awkward inside, with the bar in front and a boring ambiance inside. They definitely could have improved the décor. Service was pretty good, not that quick, but they were attentive. There was a large bee problem, since they had flowers lining the outdoor dining area. We asked to move inside and they seated us close to the window, so we could still try to enjoy the outdoors. It was late, maybe 2:00 when we sat down to eat. Their brunch menu is limited, but they do have a selection of sandwiches, egg dishes, steak, chicken, and salads. Prices are a bit high as well. Once we were inside, we were constantly told that our food was coming out in a minute or two. It was almost an hour wait for our food and there were two tables that came after us. The chef even came out of the kitchen for a while to talk to the bar guests. Excuse me, the lunch service isn’t over yet. We wanted to leave because the wait was completely unnecessary and we wanted to enjoy our day. After a couple of lies from the waitstaff saying our food would come out, the waiters finally brought our food over, and quoted«it was made with extra love.» Then why was our food lukewarm at best? My chicken and waffles was almost cold. Knowing that if I sent mine back, it would never come out of the kitchen again, I tried to enjoy it. It was mediocre at best. The chicken was delicious, seasoned well and fried nicely. The waffle was subpar, soggy, small, lacking any taste. The«grits» they put on it was very bitter, had a strong alcohol taste, and ruined the dish, since there was so much of it. We did have a nice burger, cooked well, served with fries and a tomato dip. It wasn’t anything exemplary. Their steak and eggs were the highlight of our meal, the steak was cooked perfectly, the eggs prepared nicely, the dish composed well. Although we had one amazing dish, the other components of our meal were unacceptable, especially for such an upscale restaurant.

I have been to the Flatiron several times and the menu, food, and service have always been outstanding. The menu is local, fresh, and focused, and they have great beer and wine selection as well. This past weekend, we had the crab salad special, filet Mignon, salmon, and lamb burger and everything was amazing. Highly recommended!

Great steak; among plenty of other things that I love about this restaurant. Jess and Craig are the ultimate hosts and the food and atmosphere make it a gem in our small Village — as well as a no excuse reason to come visit if you don’t live here! The prix fix menu is a great addition; enjoyed a beef stew that had me licking the bowl(figuratively) and fried chicken that was the best I’ve had since visiting Emril’s in New Orleans.

Went early on a Saturday night and it was packed by 7:00pm, and with good reason. The oysters were very good. Our drinks were first class, i.e. large and well made, and there was a nice selection of beers. A few regular beers and quite a few craft beers. There were burgers and filet mignon on our table and they were perfect. The portions were perfect, too. The sides were done right — French cut beans and potatoes. Dinner was @ $ 50 a person with tip. The food and drinks were great, the atmosphere was clean, nicely done and relaxed, and the service was appropriately attentive. I will be back there regularly.

Do not miss this place when you are in the hudson valley. All the cured meats, pates, and breads are made in house. The staff is friendly and professional, the food is incredible, and they definitely know how to make a martini.

This place is great. We like it so much that we make a point to stop by whenever we are our way from NYC to VT. The food is consistently amazing and the service superb. The rack of lamb is absolutely delicious as well as the strip and filet mignon. We got to meet some of the locals here and they all agree its one of the best in the area. B

Still really like this place. The bartender Chris is really nice and makes a great Cosmo. Would like to see s larger menu and they should offer variety of the prix fixe menu. It’s been the same for a long time

Had an early dinner there tonight. Service was excellent and answered questions about the cheeses and a number of other dishes. We had and shared: The shredded Brussels Sprouts salad, the 5 cheese plate and then each of us started and then brought home the hanger steak and the duck breast. Next time I’ll go more European and start with mains then the salad and finish with the cheese plate. A half carafe of the house red and we were very pleased with a delicious meal. Hoping to go back by after tomorrow’s Garlic Fest and have a dessert! Great place, Great Staff, Great Menu. Enjoy –Ron Carter

Overheard at our dinner table: «I don’t mind that they were sold out of a few things. A place like this deserves to be able to sell out its items.» Flatiron’s entrees are delicious at very reasonable prices, disguised by being in a really casual and friendly atmosphere. The beer/wine/drink menu was actually printed on 4 pages and butterfly-clipped together… I don’t care how it’s given to me, I just really liked the selection. The entrees were well prepared and accompanied by sauces which really accentuated the flavor. For my scallop tacos(something I had as yet never tried anyplace else), I was pleased to discover that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts, including the soft freshly-made flatbread shells, seasoned cabbage, and scallops which were tasty enough that they could have stood alone as an entrée. The duck breast was fantastic. The dinner menu is not large, but there is definitely something for everybody, including musical entertainment some nights. We did not have any desserts, but based on the descriptions(and to some extent the unusually higher than average prices), I assume they are all made on site and decadent. I must admit, I mostly make it to dinner in Red Hook on Sundays and Tuesdays because I’m a Curry House buffet addict. Now I have reason to dine in Red Hook any other night of the week.

Ribeye was tender, very tasty and expertly cooked– good char outside and med-rare, as requested, on the inside– good quality meat and great flavor. Oysters and clams were fresh and delicious. My dinner companion had the pork chop special and was very happy with it. Service was attentive and quick, with a smile. Can’t say anything bad about the place, will certainly go back.

My partner and I are still talking about this place a month later. We came here not expecting too much… in fact we didn’t even stop the car to go here since it’s called flatiron and I don’t eat meat, and headed into Rhinebeck instead. But seeing how crowded Rhinebeck was, we went back to Red Hook. I kind of want to apologize for only giving this place 4 stars. It’s because I’ve only been here once and it’s not really 5 star dining in the best way– it’s casual, easy going and relaxed. It cares about its beer menu and has fries. That kind of place. Let me begin with beer– Berlinerweisse! First time I’ve seen this in the US. They gave me my syrup on the side so I could enjoy it on the tarter side. Mmmmm. I got a brussel sprout salad that had so much going on taste-wise. It was a lot of food. I enjoyed but was jealous of the boy who was making happy noises while consuming his chowder. Ordered food. I ordered these crepes on a whim and he got the steak. When we got our food, I won. I actually won with a veggie dish at a steak place. The crepes were in-friggen-sane with this reduced, intensely umami romanesco tomato sauce, tiny tomatoes bursting with fresh tomatoes, mushroom and cheese. The steak was apparently done perfectly, but he chose the wrong sauce. Now, dessert. It gets its own paragraph. We got FOMO watching these souffles parade by– one table ordered one and then immediately ordered 2 more. We knew this had to happen despite being stuffed. Glad we did. We talked every night we were in Milan about going back just for the soufflé. The person who mentioned the funny smell is right. What IS it?

How could anyone on here write what they did about this place? You fools, this food is incredible. I’ve come here every time I am in Red hook and always get their incredible and always changing cheese platter and the hangar steak. I have tried other things that my friends have ordered so I’ve had a lot of the menu and still excited to keep coming back and try it again. The staff is awesome also so I’m not sure what that one person’s comment was about.

I hadn’t been here in over a year, but suggested to some friends who just moved nearby that we head there for dinner on a Saturday night recently. The dinner was very good. Not excellent, not ‘just’ good. I’m conflicted in saying this, because so many of the elements of the restaurant are great, but the somewhat lackluster service leaves me less than jazzed about the place. As for the good elements; the winelist and btg selections are great. I heard that the proprietress used to work for Frederick Wildman, a great small wine importer in NYC. GREAT selections at fair prices. The menu is very good, too. Roasted oyster appetizer was very tasty, and my 6 oz. flatiron steak was cooked perfectly. Fries were great, the homemade ketchup a little watery. One more little gripe – my Brussels sprout salad, while fresh, was a little overwhelmed by a shower of grated cheese. For raw greens salads, I’ll stick with the kale salad up the street at Mercato. Back on the positive side, I really like the range of sauces available(included) with the steaks. All in all, a very good meal. I think, though, that this will be the place we come for grilled hunks of beef… which we don’t do very often anymore. Still, this will be our steak house.

My husband and I love Flatiron! We visit there every season change, because the menu changes. We recently visited and I had the Seared Scallops with roasted cauliflower, golden raisins, nuts, just talking about it make my mouth water. My husband is a plain jane and always gets the Steak Frittes. Which is equally as wonderful. The steak is always tender, and the housemade steak sauce is fantastic. The only other one my husband will use against A-1. The service is always fabulous, the atmosphere is always warm and cozy, welcoming. Flatiron will be a staple in our going out adventures for a long time to come! If you want fabulous food, great service visit Flatiron. You won’t be disappointed!

Overall, great food. I ordered steak tartare as an appetizer-it was very flavorful and very different from anything I’ve ever tried at a restaurant. For an entrée I ordered the scallops with fregola and beets. I had never tried this type of pasta before, and it was definitely tasty. I’m a all about trying new things and sometimes this doesn’t turn out so well, but this time it was definitely a hit. On the other hand, it took awhile for the waiter to get us our drinks, our food and our bill. They started to get busy when we walked in, but I feel like we shouldn’t have had to wait 35 minutes to get our check. Also, he wasn’t sure what any of the drinks we were asking for were, and this was a bit unsettling. The food was great, but I was less than impressed by the service.
