Eastern Grill

Almost done reviewing all of the options at The Commons! Today I decided to try Eastern Grill which is one of the four Typhoon run spaces. Eastern Grill is essentially a Mongolian stir fry place, but they also serve Asian influenced sandwiches here.
I decided to give the sandwich side of the menu a try. Several cuisine types of cuisine are represented in the selections. There is even a banh mi option which is probably more on par with the type you would expect from Baguette Box. It is a little souped up to gauge you.
I got the tonkatsu sandwich with sea salt fries ($ 6.99) which looked like an appealing combo. However I was slightly put off by the display of sandwiches. I would have much preferred that these be made to order, especially the tonkatsu portion. Unfortunately, it appears that they just reheat the sandwich.
To no surprise, the tonkatsu part of the sandwich was disappointing. It was soggy, when it should be crisp. I think chicken katsu would have been a better option. Despite this, the rest of the sandwich was surprisingly good. The sandwich bread was excellent. Easily the best bread I have found in the complex.
As for the sea salt fries, they were of the shoestring sort and they were very good. You do not need to add much flavoring, it is well seasoned on its own. Ketchup actually dilutes it. The fries are also the best beating out the ones from Steamers and Quincy’s upstairs. Very odd to me that the meat portion being the weak link in the meal.
I would recommend Eastern Grill for a quick casual meal on campus at Microsoft. Fries are good, but I am steering clear of the tonkatsu sandwich and trying one of the other ones instead next time.
