I’ve heard of pocket parks, but this is ridiculous. This park needs to be adopted! Ideally by someone who did a lot of mind-expanding drugs in their younger years so that full and unfettered appreciation may be conferred upon every bit of the available potential of this decidedly limited open space. First, the good: There’s free parking here, and you can sit on the rocks and watch the boats go by in the harbor. Now for the rest: This is a park like Pluto is a planet or as Long Beach is a destination. In other words, you really have to use your imagination. Moonstone Park is essentially a small rectangular plot of worn grass; don’t look too hard as not all dog owners have been as meticulous as others. On top of that, at present there is a construction trailer and a temporary building en residence while the new Harbor Patrol building gets built. This is also the entry point into the harbor waters for an outrigger canoe club, so there are small structures/storage for that as well. I suppose you could play frisbee here, although unlike at the beach, if your frisbee takes a detour into the water here, you are somewhat SOL — bring a spare as the offshore breeze has been known to pick up in the afternoons. How about a picnic? Maybe, as long as you are self-contained. There are no grills, no picnic tables, and one woebegone concrete table in the corner; that said, I wouldn’t really want to chance sitting on the grass for the most part. Unless and until they improve or someone adopts this afterthought of a patch of grass, you’re better off paying for parking and spending the day at the very well-executed and beautiful Veterans Park just down the street.

Where the hell is Moonstone Park? I have lived in Redondo for more than 13 years and never knew this park existed and now I know why. You know where the power plant is with the Wayland painting and there is that little street running between the Spectrum and the Blue Water Grill? Well you take that street and go to the gate and pay $ 8 for the day to park in the Marina area and straight back at the end on the left hand side is Moonstone Park. I came here today to go to a picnic with the Redondo Beach Fire Department was having for it’s CERT members . The park is really just a medium sized lawn with nothing else but it is located next to their harbor station and it along the harbor. They had a big BBQ grill with hamburgers and hotdogs and we brought the sides. Luckily they did not charge us for parking since we were with the FD but no one goes there and if you have a big group and want a lawn you don’t have to stake out an area if you come here. Just carpool or ride your bikes. [see posted photos of hot firemen playing soccer]
