Ultra Lux Salon & Lounge

I couldnt decide whether to post anything or not, but I was disappointed. For one the stylist barely spent any time with me even though the place was empty. An assistant and/​or the receiptionist washed and brushed my hair. I went in for only a trim to the ends and was charged the whole price. Whenever I’ve gone to a salon for a trim, I’ve usually been charged a smaller amount since there is less work. She just didn’t really listen to me and spent no time. Won’t go back.

Maine is wonderful. She got right down to business, listened to what I was hoping to achieve with my hair, and did exactly what I requested, which was cutting off around 3 – 4 inches of hair plus tips on how to style it just like a picture I showed as an example. She also advised me on how short to go, taking into consideration that my curly hair would make the cut shorter than what I initially asked for. In and out in 40-​ish minutes + a glass of wine while in the chair — AMAZING! Thank You!

I highly recommend Ultra Lux Salon. It’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Jen Mendoza has been cutting my hair for over a year. She has a great eye with a fun and creative spin on my haircut. It’s unique and just for me! I love her easy-​going and accepting personality.

I’ve been coming here for years and seen many different stylists. I’m not an «I’ll only see so-​and-​so» person… Call it luck, but I think it’s a testament to the awesome stylists this place attracts. Always happy to have a Bellini with my balayage.

I went here for the first time last week and despite being super anxious about trying out a new place, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. Yanni was amazing and I love my awesome cut ;)

Got my hair dyed and cut by Maine! She is definitely educated and knows your exact needs/​wants on point! I told her what cut and color I wanted, she gave me suggestions and we moved forward with her ideas. My hair came out exactly what I wanted to look like. I’m beyond happy with the results and I left the salon with smiles and confidence. Ready for the fall!!!

Ever since I moved to the South Bay, this is the only salon I have been visiting. And only with Mayne. She is an awesome stylist and a sweetheart too. The salon is located in a little strip mall on Aviation just a few blocks past Artesia. It has a very cool 50s theme and vibe. The salon is even open on Sundays, which is great because many places are not. Mayne has always done my cuts and layers extremely well and she does a great blowout too. I always get compliments on my hair. She has also done my root coloring and that has always been good too. Basically, I am really happy with this salon and with Mayne specifically. Although I am somewhat conservative with my hair style, the place does do a lot of funky cuts and colors that I have observed while visiting. They are very nice and professional and return calls quickly. I highly recommend Ultra Lux!

I’ve been going to Danny as my barber for years. I’ve had every haircut possible. He’s managed to take care of every one of them. I’ve gotten fades, tapers, I’ve had a Mohawk, comb over, and been bald where he shaved it for me with a straight razor. Long story long, he came to Ultra Lux about 1 ½ ago and I followed. This place is the best. The ambiance is amazing. At first you can’t stay still because you want to look around at every thing and the classic feel it has. Ask for Ashley for a head massage ((the best)) or Angie for information on Aveda. Owners are very friendly and make you feel comfortable. Not to mention the free drinks while getting a fresh cut.

This place is the best! Hadn’t been in a while but was in desperate need of some mommy TLC…$ 55 bucks and I’m completely transformed!!! Maine (pronounced My-​NAY) was wonderful, completely understood what I needed and executed it perfectly. Check out my before and after shot…

Let me start off by saying that I LOVE MAINE! I seriously don’t know why I didn’t come to her sooner! I spent the last year with really bad cuts (from other sub par salons). I didn’t actually realize how bad those cuts were until I came here and had Maine work on it! First, she did a keratin treatment which drastically reduced my super, crazy, frizzy hair and the amount of time it takes to style it. My hair is now incredibly manageable; something I NEVER thought I’d say about my hair. It’s truly amazing how much of a difference the treatment made! I will continue coming back for regular touch ups!
On my next visit, I showed Maine a couple of pictures of what I had in mind, but ultimately asked her to do whatever she thought would best suit my hair. She ended up giving me a textured bob cut, colored my hair a chocolatey brown and added a subtle ombré. The cut is PERFECT for my hair and the color/​ombré added so much dimension to my otherwise boring hair. I can’t believe I finally have hair I love!!! Maine actually told me she wanted me to love my hair and she certainly worked her magic because I absolutely love my hair! She knows her stuff and her work is nothing short of amazing. I will definitely keep coming back for regular visits!

I have been a customer of this salon for a little bit over a year, but I had been here before that on a few occassions. My former colleague recommended this place to me when my normal stylist was busy some 6 years ago. I always remembered it, and when my stylist went MIA, I moved over here.
This review is for the general atmosphere and Maine’s services. First, I like the salon. It has a different feel than most and it works for them. Everyone has always been nice to me. I’ve never had to wait for an appt (that I didn’t beg to be squeezed in for) and I’ve never been ignored. So 5 stars there.
As for Maine, she’s awesome! I am in the salon about every 8 – 10 weeks for either roots or highlights/​cut. Maine was never anything less than stellar with all. I went in yesterday to completely darken my hair with a little bit of red highlights framing my face. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she talked through color with me. We discussed the all over color pretty extensively because we had a slight difference of opinion. She made a good case and she’s the expert so I went with her choice.
After several hours, I saw the results. The color was EXACTLY like the picture and my hair looked so good! I have a whole new appreciation for Maine’s skill with color and her attention to detail. I read a terrible review from someone regarding Maine, and I was truly shocked. In an attempt to tell another side of it, I wanted to comment. With me, Maine is not very talkative. I don’t know if that’ s because I’m not or if that is the way she is in general. I can’t say that I care because I’m not very talkative by nature so it suits me. Perhaps she is just mirroring the customer which is Customer Service 101. My last comment is that she’s always been attentive and nice. Again, 5 stars.
I hate to see a good stylist blasted because of a very one-​dimensional experience. Ultra Lux is the type of salon that takes no prisoners. They wont’ let you F with them and be all nice to you afterwards. I think that makes them badass which is, coincidentally, the feeling you get when you step in there.

I did it! That’s right, I found a dope hair artist on my first try… and SHE KNOWS CURLY HAIR! I am new to the area and this was my first haircut since moving here. I was in dire need of a haircut for my curly mop. I did a ton of research before finding Jen Mendoza. My diligence totally paid off. Between Unilocal reviews and visiting the website, I found that Jen had good reviews, and another kind of superficial thing that I look for: she actually has curly hair. Some people may think it’s silly, but I appreciate that she has curly hair because she can 100% understand what I am talking about, and she can give me great tips.
Jen was really patient with me as I explained what I wanted, and how I normally wear my hair. I mostly wear my hair curly, and I want volume. I love my big curly hair, and it is important to me that my stylist understand what I mean when I say I want big, curly, hair. Jen understands because she has big, curly, hair! She cut my hair dry, then washed it, and did a second round of cutting, then some finishing touches after styling it. I left the salon feeling so pretty, and my hair is super shiny and soft. I love the way it looks curly and straight… thanks Jen!
Jen can cut straight hair and curly hair, and she does color as well. Do come and see her if you are looking for a hairdresser that will listen to you, and make great, practical, recommendations. One sweet bonus is that I can come back between haircuts to have my bangs trimmed, gratis. I will totally come back to see Jen. Ultra Lux is a cool salon, they play great music, the vibe is dope, and they are competitively priced.

I haven’t looked forward to getting my hair cut and colored until I started going to this spot and seeing Jenn. I’m one of those people who don’t really know what possibilities are out there for my hair style. I love my hair and am surprised at how great it comes out every time I leave their salon.
Ambiance is on point with cute vintage/​antique salon decorations and good choice of music. Staff are friendly. Walk ins are welcomed but making an appointment is really easy/​convenient!

I have been going to Ultralux since 2005. After my last visit, I’m done.
I usually see Sara Marie, but she seems to always be booked these days, so I thought I’d use Trisha who was available (and who I have used in the past and liked her work). Here we go… She had me waiting for 45 minutes after my appointment time, which was irritating but I understand that schedules don’t always go as planned. All I ever ask from service professionals is acknowledgement — nothing less, nothing more. I received zero acknowledgement. Okay, you made me late to my dinner, but life goes on. Also note that three people, I kid you not, asked if I wanted something to drink, at which I responded I would take some water — nothing came of that. Anyways, needless to say, I was irritated during my whole experience there, and to add, I left unhappy with my ombré color, which is unacceptable when I’ve shown you a photo, and there is nothing affordable about your prices.
Because the color wasn’t what I was looking for, I scheduled another appointment to have her change the color to what I had originally requested. Yet again I’m left waiting 30 minutes after my appointment time. She begins by stating that last time I complained about my color too (a year and half ago), and I never seem satisfied. Mind you, the last time she insisted that I come in again because she said the color would fade quickly, and she wanted to give me what I was paying for. I was in complete shock. Oh there’s more.
After she finished, she ran to the back so that the receptionist could charge me another $ 100 for the work she should have done the first time. I should have objected, but it was my birthday night, and I was already late, and whatever came out of my mouth would not have been pretty or classy at that time.
Needless to say, they lost my business, and the handful of regular clients from my circle who I recommended to use their services. My parents also own a business across the street from them where I won’t be providing any positive recommendations about their business.
The quality of their work has declined, while their prices and egos have gone up.
Unacceptable. Unprofessional. Never again.

I just want to say that my first time last Friday for hair and make up definitely will not be the last. I was a bit early for my hair appt but Jen took me in right away. It was graduation day for me and I wasn’t feeling good that morning but she offered some mimosas and it sure helped me feel better. Thanks again! I love my make up!!! Sara did my makeup and everybody loved it. Thanks for making me look pretty on my grad day ladies! I will be back soon!
