M & M Nursery

I know that M & M Nursery may seem disorganized in appearance but it’s one of the only (if not the only) nursery I’ve found that sells ALL ORGANIC merchandise. There is NOT ONE bottle of Monsanto’s deadly Roundup on a shelf (which is partly responsible for decimating our precious bee population in case you’re not aware). Every plant I’ve purchased has been happy or bounced back nicely with a little TLC. So many huge bees frequent there so I found that to be a good sign. The people who work there are nice & always happy to answer questions. They also carry the milkweed plant, which is the only plant that Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on. Since the plant has the word «weed» in it, milkweed’s disappeared from use & is hard to find. I appreciate M & M’s knowledge, caring, & amazing prices for everything I’ve gotten there. Please give them a try instead of a chain store!

Amazingly helpful staff, the man there gave me a tour of the entire nursery and really took his time explaining all of the different plants, their name’s, and how to care for them. This nursery not only has an amazing selection of plants and trees but also extremely knowledgeable staff who really care and are passionate about what they do. This is very hard to find nowadays. I am definitely going here from now on and would highly recommend this nursery to anyone who asks.
I wish I remembered the man’s name, but I am going back to this nursery soon so I will update this review to include his name after I do so. The man even said to bring in pictures of my yard and where I want to install plants and he could tell me which plants would work great there!

easy, convenient, and walking distance from my house… what’s not to like?
i try to come here frequently b/​c they change their selections according to the seasons. japanese maple trees in the early spring, fruit trees in the spring-​summer, veggie trees/​plants in the early summer, roses and perennials almost all year round.
helpful staff members make it easy to get my questions answered and decisions made about which plants to purchase for my yard. prices are very reasonable. garden accessories and tools are available for purchase inside the store, while all of their plants and trees are on display outside.

I visited M & M Nursery on my lunch break to get some information about a tree I’ve been charged to care for. Since I don’t know much about Sequoia trees I thought I’d pop in ask a few questions. The gentleman behind the desk (I didn’t get his name) was very friendly and helpful and answered all my questions. He gave me some basics on how to care for the tree and even suggested I bring the tree in if I experienced any problems. He never tried to sell me anything and shared his knowledge freely. I would definitely return to M & M in the future.

first impression: something is definitely wrong when you get out of your car, start walking around an establishment, and then immediately hear an older man (the owner?) receiving a truck with some plants in it SHOUT «how the f**k did that happen?» to the truck driver, super loud for all to hear…
this place needs help, and not just because of that —
after walking the entire lot, all i can say is that it REALLY seems like no one is taking care of the plants here — or for that matter, caring for the storefront either. so many of the plants were wilty, on the verge of seeding (they shouldn’t be — i was there early june) — probably from lack of water, and most of the place was unorganized and the plants were unlabeled and unpriced. there were hoses strewn all over the ground, not rolled up, and had i been older or in a wheelchair, i never could have navigated it.
i really wanted to like the underdog, m and m. since they are so close to wegman’s, who beams like the most brilliant star when compared to m and m, they really should take a second look at whats going on with their business and do some housecleaning in more ways than one.
we stopped at m and m first — couldn’t find anything or any help — and also heard some old man shout the f bomb at some delivery guy. bad, bad, bad. left a terrible taste in my mouth and we ended up spending our $$ at wegman’s, where customer service and pride in merchandise were clearly evident.

My new favorite. I drive up from Los Altos. Great selection and prices. Paul and Mark are very helpful and knowledgeable. Manfred’s a great guy. A nice family run, no frills place. They treat me well.

This place is great!
I went knowing what I needed, but wasn’t sure what to look for, and Mark was very helpful. I wanted a blooming plant that didn’t require much sunlight, and was lower maintenance. He glad showed me the many different options available, and was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of care needed. We looked at many gorgeous plants. The lot is HUGE, and it’s nice to just take a walk and snap some pictures while you wait for your plant to be potted. I didn’t feel at all rushed, and in the end I left with a gorgeous pink azalea in a neutral blue pot, fully trimmed and potted by Mark.
What a wonderful overall experience. Highly recommended! :)

I like to support local businesses when possible. Being relatively new to RWC, I did most of my garden shopping at Wegman’s Nursery in the past. I decided to check out M+M to see what they’ve got to offer. It seems most of their product is trees. The non-​tree items (flowers, vegetables, herbs) were scattered throughout the nursery with no clear logic in placement. The nursery looked cluttered and dirty. Many plants were dying and dry. The staff pretty much ignored me until it was time to pay. I did purchase a few veggies but they don’t look very healthy. I’ll be shopping at Wegman’s from now on.

We were looking for a nice oak tree that we planned on enjoying for decades to come and we found a beautiful live oak at M&M. We had it well taken care of and it grew by leaps and bounds. After a couple of years or so we had an arborist come to check it out. He mentioned how well it was cared for, but it was unfortunate that it had a bad crotch. We told him where we purchased it from and he thought that it should have been obvious to the nursery. After contacting the same guy we purchased it from, we were turned down for any kind of resolution. He charged us $ 400 for that tree and numerous arborists say that he must have known since that part of the tree was well established. We feel that this was something that he knew he could off load and not lose his profit if he could find the right customer. Like a cheesy car salesman. Your much better off going to Wegmans Nursery where they will stand behind their product and won’t rob you.
We feel that he still owes us a 8 — 10 foot tall tree of our choice, but he won’t even entertain the thought of a discount and we won;t settle for less than a replacement.

I found this place by accident when I was looking for Wegman’s. They’re only a block apart but Wegman’s is way better.
M&M’s display didn’t seem to follow any sort of system. If you’re looking for something specific, you have to look throuh the whole nursery to see if they have it. There are also very few price tags.
The staff didn’t seem interested in me. There was one young woman dead heading roses who seemed surprised when I greeted her. There was also a guy watering who didn’t seem the least interested in me. Inside I could see two older people reading magazines behind the counter.
The only member of staff who wanted anything to do with me was the cat. It insisted it hadn’t been petted in years. :-) Unfortunately she didn’t know the price of the fuchsia I liked, so I left empty-​handed. I saw a number of other people who did the same while I was there.
This nursery could be a lot more profitable if they got their act together. Asking if people need help, organising and labeling merchandise are helpful things to do if you want to sell plants.

I love this place. The guy who’s always working behind the counter is extremely knowledgable about plants. Today I went in to get some daisies and we got to talking about the disappearance of the bees this year. I was lamenting about how my cherry tree — which was full of tons of beautiful blossoms this year, has only about 3 cherries on it now!
He explained to me that some trees need a «pollinizer» — and they need to be planted next to a different type of tree in order to be pollinized (I did not know that). He let me read a little booklet he had behind the counter, about pollinization and which trees need what, in order to do well and produce fruit. He said that many large nurseries, and stores like Costco (which is where I got the tree from) do not bother to tell people things like this.
It seems like every time I see this guy I end up having some conversation with him about trees or fertilizer. You really get the feeling that he’s passionate about plants, and that’s the kind of person I want to buy from! This nursery doesn’t even carry plants that won’t do well in this area. They are a small nursery but I just love them, they put a lot of care into their business. They have a HUGE, beautiful selection of trees in the back, too. You can spot this place when you’re heading west on woodside — just look for the beautiful red rose bush on the black wire fence. They usually have a few roses and the like, pulled out on the driveway.

UPDATE: I am so sad!!! Matthew (I believe that was his name) is no longer there. He passed away in early February, and his brother is now working at the counter. What a tragic loss. I came in today to ask some more questions about pollinating your own flowers. I knew Matthew would know. But his brother seemed very knowledgeable about plants as well.
Please continue to support M & M Nursery. There is a photo of Matthew on the wall by the cash register. Hopefully his spirit is still looking after the place. I wasn’t going to buy anything but then saw the most gorgeous pansies ever, outside, and they were just calling to me… I like to think it was Matthew’s spirit still making the sun shine on his nursery :)
