One of earths natural wonders. the Oregon Dunes are one of my favorite places, just a cool mix of Sahara-esque dunes, coniferous forest, and Pacific Ocean that you find really no where else. If you can, walk the width of the dunes on one the designated trails to the ocean for its full effect, it’s worth the hike!

Okay, so this is not the way you should start off a Unilocal review, but have you ever seen the 60s Japanese movie«Woman In The Dunes»?(If not, and if you like black & white existentialist erotic horror films, stop reading now.) The story was set in this area of immense sand dunes, 20 or 30 feet high, and they were just so unreal that I couldn’t believe they were filmed on location somewhere. To think there are parts of the earth that resemble this? Well yes there are, and here’s a lovely example. There are a number of entryways into the Oregon Dunes, but this might be the most obvious one off of the 101. You park, you pay(Oregon Day Use — though if you have the Oregon Coast Passport you’re covered — though I don’t think you can buy one here), you look at some very large dunes. There are a couple of overlooks for the people who just need a few minutes, but you can actually get into the sand from here and really lose yourself on this alien landscape. The Dunes are also known for dune buggies and ATVs, and that’s a fun way to check this area out too, but none of them are allowed near this area giving you a quiet detachment from just about everything else in your life. There are only two caveats:(1) pay attention to your wandering ways so you can get back, and(2) prepare to have sand enter orifices of your body you didn’t even know existed. I’m still finding it between my toes some three weeks later. But it could be worse — I made it out easily, unlike the guy in «Woman In The Dunes.»

Oregon Dunes NRA is huge, stretching along Oregon Coast about 40 miles from North Bend to Florence. Don’t forget to bring drinking water, snacks, and sunblock.

One of the best places to escape reality on the west coast of North America. A park to capture your imagination and renew your sense of wonder. A sand and seascape that inspires art. The wind blows the sea grass and sculpts the sand into natural formations that feast the eyes and spirit. The surf sounds soothe the soul, the waves keep rolling and pounding like drums. You feel that you never want to leave. Best time to travel? When no one else is :-)
