Have you(or your children) ever wanted to sing or play piano? If so, you need to meet Bill and Jeanne Weiser(they are relatives, not a married couple), who are two of Reno’s greatest gifts(and secrets)! Bill is a vocal coach, and Jeanne teaches piano. They are both BRILLIANT, though I have only taken lessons from Bill. If there’s ever a point in time I can afford piano lessons, I will definitely take them from Jeanne! Their studio is tucked away on E. Mill St, near the intersection of Mill and Edison. It’s difficult to read the addresses on the suites they are located in, but it’s in the same complex as Joe Bob’s(there is a turquoise awning that is easier to identify than the address itself). Bill has been teaching students to sing in Northern Nevada for over two decades. He taught choir at Sparks High School and the now-defunct performing arts charter high school(I forget the name, as it was after my time), as well as at Maytan Music. What he teaches is nothing short of genius. Too often, vocal teachers spend too much time on breathing and music theory. While breathing is the foundation of singing, much like the plié is the foundation of ballet, it is the exploration of our individual, unique voices that makes students want to return. Don’t get me wrong, he spends time teaching you how to breathe, but his goal is to get you painting with your voice, not spending all your time and money buried in theory. This creative approach gives you wins in each lesson and makes you want to come back to continue working on/exploring the joy of singing. He is incredibly intuitive and his techniques evoke immediate understanding and response. He can communicate well with singers of all ages and experience levels. In my first month of lessons, he untapped two whole steps in my high range, and three more whole steps in my low range. For those who don’t read music, this is a big deal! This was accomplished in a few 30 minute sessions, which is pretty incredible. He has a book on amazon(Breathe Color Into Your Voice) that comes with a warmup cd if you want to learn a little about his methods before investing in lessons. Bill and Jeanne both give you a lot of bang for your buck(s)! Jeanne charges $ 25/half hour and Bill charges $ 35/half hour. Most lessons of this high caliber will cost twice as much. They do not price-gouge, nor are they trying to get rich. They both have a genuine love of music and they have a gift for sharing this with students of any age. They are wonderful with children! Share the gift of music with yourself and those you love. It makes your heart happy.
