It’s like a huge expensive yard sale. Not my kinda second hand store.

They have some decent stuff at okay prices, but for a secondhand store I would expect for the prices to be a little bit better. Don’t go in here expecting to find clothing, you’ll need to go next-door to Plato’s Closet for that. A lot of the furniture seems to be the better of the deals here, as well as some of the wall hanging items. There are usually some power tools that go very cheap compared to their original retail price. The majority of the furniture however is generally a little bit of a ding and dent and feels a touch overpriced. Look for deals by checking the price tags on items. Anything that has been there for at least a month it’s a substantial price decrease, and after a second month it gets an even more substantial price cut.

My secret favorite part of going consignment clothes shopping is straying into the various housewares sections of the consignment stores. Goodwill, especially, can be a gold mine of crazy old electronics– but I digress. New Uses is all housewares and associated things, and quite a selection. They cram a lot of junk into that little store, and it varies enough to make browsing interesting. Sure, there’s a lot of crap– there’d have to be. The best stuff goes quickly because the prices are basically amazing. I almost bought two coffee tables I didn’t need and some wall art I barely liked because they seemed like such steals. Great senses than mine prevailed, but my appetite was whetted and it’s a regular consignment stop now. This place begs for repeat visits– maybe someday you’ll get ultralucky and stumble on that one find that sticks with you. New Uses!

I really wanted to like this place. New Uses is in the same corporate family as Plato’s Closet. Instead of buying and selling used clothes, New Uses buys and sells household items. And though I’ve rarely purchased anything at Plato’s, I paid for more than a few books(and road trips) in college with cash from selling my clothes at Plato’s. Sadly, everything that is so great about Plato’s — super-friendly sales staff, easy-to-understand buy-back policy, relatively speedy service — goes south at New Uses. On the several trips I’ve made to the store, the gruff sales staff has only taken one or two of the items I’ve offered them. I can’t figure out what they accept. Oh, and the whole process takes FOREVER. It’s nothing to spend an hour or more waiting for an associate to look at the items you’re trying to sell. Once I became so frustrated that I prematurely took my stuff and donated it to Goodwill. Maybe that’s for the best anyway. I’m sure this system works for some people, but I just can’t make sense of it.

The best way to describe New Uses is, «It’s like someone went to all the garage sales for you and did all the hard work». However true that might be, it doesn’t make for a very good slogan. New Uses is a great place for college students moving out of the dorms, newlyweds on a budget, or for those looking to change up their style at home but without spending a lot of dough. Dinnerware sets, glass sets, and silverware sets allow you to switch up some color in your dining. You can find some pretty fashionable designs, most likely last seasons favorites. I’ve never seen couches or armchairs here, but I have found really nice dining room sets as well as stools, end tables, and desks. I once saw a mod dining room table with 4 chairs, but it was well out of my price range and I wept inside. The really good stuff goes fast, so if something catches your eye, buy it on the spot. If you wait there’s a chance it’ll be gone next time you stop by. «A Fun Place to Shop» is the the slogan that New Uses decided to stick with, and it’s as true as the one that I came up with.
