Hennepin County Library – Augsburg Park Library

I love a good library as much as the next guy. But today I noticed an alarming issue that is beginning to over take the location. Pre teens are hanging out more than ever with no adult supervision. They come for the free internet service and hang out for hours.
If you go to the Augsburg location, arrive early enough to get access to the quiet room. Especially on a Saturday.
I did not and there were kids at the computers playing online games while talking loudly at one another. One child began to punch the computer screen causing it to fall over.
Naturally it was (to them) the funniest thing in the world causing them to shriek and giggle with I contained joy. Their noise travelled throughout the library. I was annoyed and said something directly to them. They ignored me of course and continued on.
The library staff sat at the desk ignoring the behavior. So too did the security guard on duty…
Next time I will go to Southdale.

This is one of my local libraries that I go to 2−3x/month.
It’s quite small, BUT it holds boundless charm. In the last year, they gave the interior a bit of a facelift which included updating their check-​out technology.
While the library is almost always quiet, there is a provided glass-​enclosed «Quiet Room» to study in. There’s a kid’s area, a fairly impressive magazine section (considering how small the library is to begin with), and a fair selection of book topics, of course.
Unlike the other libraries, since this location’s interior facelift, they want books returned outside through the book drop at all times. Only slightly inconvenient if you don’t know that ahead of time. Staff is helpful and nice whenever you have questions.
By using the library book transfer option, you have access to ALL of the books that the Hennepin County Library system has to offer. Depending on the popularity of the book, you can get your hands on a title any where from a week to MONTHS (& months and months). It’s a great system especially for those bookworms who are avoiding clutter and accumulation in their own homes!

My local library… easy access, I can request books online, stop in and pick them up. Great spot.

It might be because of the weather — it’s foggy, misty outside — and so it gives the park around the library a feeling of mystery and eeriness. But it also gives the library a lot of character and a sense of calmness, if you really focus and meditate on your surroundings outside the library.
I’m here @ 5pm on a Wednesday evening and the library is pretty loud. There are kids from school all over. The younger ones are either playing on the computer or being tutored. The older ones are quietly studying. But all in all the talking from every which way can be the opposite of the quiet you’re seeking when you go to a library. This library has a quiet study room though with about 15 seats, it’s surrounded by glass.
Another charm of this library is that there is a fireplace in the middle of it. It’s not cold enough to turn it on but if it were on, it’d be really quite the draw. Other than that, the library is pretty small. The people here are very diverse and dare I say an eclectic mix of people. This library is on the older side — computers are huge, tan, from the 80’s, that type of tech. Again, it has its charms, but if you’re looking for a modern library, besides free wifi, you’re probably going to be left wanting here.
