I hired Amir and his team for a major (year long) renovation of my home in Berkeley. It was a very large project involving just about every trade there is – plumbing, electrical, radiant heat, house moving and lifting, framing, tile, drywall, etc etc. Amir was a wonderful partner throughout this process. He listened carefully to our goals and concerns, and it was always reassuring to hear him say, «don’t worry about that — I’m going to take care of it.» Because that’s just what he’d do.
Along the way we did what everyone does — change their minds. Amir handles these zigs and zags beautifully — he knows when an idea has become real and when we’re just kicking it around. I especially like his level of personal engagement in the work: some contractors will do exactly what they’re told, even if it’s a bad idea. Not Amir — he has opinions (that tend to be correct) but he’s diplomatic and considerate at the same time.
I had actually used Amir’s services on a much smaller project several years ago and was pleased to see that his crew has some of the same guys. This is a good sign, in my book, because it means the workers are happy in their jobs, and happy workers do their best work. The guys were always polite, considerate about noise, and did their best to keep a clean job site. They also worked well with the neighbors, defusing some potential problems early on – an important skill.
We couldn’t be more pleased with the work that Amir and his team did. No one (that I could afford) knows everything, and I really appreciate the way Amir would tap into his extensive professional network to come up with solutions for some problems. I much prefer that approach to that of a «seen-​it-​all, know-​it-​all» guy.
Other things I had the pleasure of observing over the year were: Amir’s skill in managing the «edges» between trades — just what a GC is for. He established a great working relationship with the architects and engineers — something one can’t take for granted. And he worked well with the city inspectors too, using them as a resource for problem solving.
Finally, a word about Amir’s subcontractors. It became obvious pretty early on that Amir was working from a «no bozos» playbook. Everybody he engaged on our project was polite, professional, and helped us achieve our goals. Pulling together that kind of talent is itself a talent, and we’re forever grateful.
