I’d really like to be able to give them more stars, but I just can’t. The food just wasn’t that good. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with cheese and sausage on toast and a side of bacon. The bacon was the most crispy I’ve ever seen, too crispy. The sausage patties on the sandwich were just gross. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? I’d like to be able to give them a second chance, but I feel like there’s other places I should try first. The staff was friendly enough. I arrived at 7:45am on a Sunday and there were a few people sitting at the table top area. By the time I left at 8:15am, families with young children had arrived and the seating was almost full. They played motown music and old classics which I enjoyed.

The City Dîner is a busy spot and boasts strong rapport with local regulars. The menu is basic diner. The interior is bright and cherry. The bathrooms tolerable. The food is generally good but prepared items like the sausage gravy may be heavily salted. An order of fried herring kippers consisted on heavily salted bone, skin, and batter. Could have been better.

I give this place 2 stars because the food was good and was prepared by two very friendly Latin folks. The server however was not very pleasant. My friend and I asked for sweet tea and the server said they had run out. When my friend asked politely whether they were going to make anymore, the server very abruptly said no, because it was a holiday(Christmas Eve). She poured half of sweet tea and into both our glasses. My friend said she shouldn’t charge us for that. The woman said«well now that you said that I will charge you for two». I almost walked out at that point, my friend asked me to stay. As I said, the bad experience was improved by the delicious meal, though I must observe that the cashier and server treated the short order cooks as servants may be because the cooks were Latino and their English wasn’t as good.

Terrible customer service. Was waiting in line on a busy morning because of the Christmas parade. We were waiting about 30 mins after being told 10 to 15 mins originally, no big deal, that happens. We had our two children with us who were getting antsy so my wife walked next door to Arbys to get some fries or something for the kids to snack on while waiting. Of course that is when our table became ready. I was on the phone with her and told her our table was ready and to come back. The hostess heard me and said since we werent all in the building that instant that our table went to the next group, and just skipped over us. Wouldnt wait the literally 15 seconds it would take for her to walk next door! I explained this to the server and she rudely said everyone else after me is waiting too so that is that, and then walked away. I understand being busy but this was just unacceptable, especially since we never were told about these strict jail like restrictions. There are too many other restaurants nearby to deal with this nonsense. Very disappointing.

My go-to breakfast spot. Best biscuits and gravy in town, coffee cup never goes empty, the ladies that work there acknowledge everyone that walks through the door and you can tell they love their job and their customers. If you’re looking for a good, fairly cheap and quick breakfast, this is the spot!

I can’t imagine a diner being any better. One of those places that beckons you to return. It’s a hot spot on West Broad Street in Richmond, and for good reason. The food is prepared fast, friendly and deliciously. Oh, the coffee was superb too. A diner menu offers lots, so I can only review what I ate, but I eyeballed others dishes and they get the up too. My meal was corned beef hash, two eggs over easy with home fries(pleasantly added with onions) and two big pieces of rye toast. More than enough to fill the belly. Three types of hot sauces are available as well. I arrived on a Sunday just before 9 am and got a seat no problem. By 9:30 am they were taking names for the next available table. Worth the wait, no doubt. Open for lunch too, so I’ll have to graze those offerings down the line. For now I’ll be back for breakfast with others to share the experience of great, home style diner food.

Delicious food! Loved the union station Benedicts. Best I’ve had to date. Great atmosphere and music. The blues and SRV were playing.

The meat lovers omelet(only meats were sausage, ham, & bacon) was wonderful. And hash browns on the side are just hard to beat. I’ve had this combo twice. Excellent both times. On December 4 I arrived near closing time(2.30 pm) and ordered the Meat Lover’s Omelette and Triple Decker Club Sandwich to go. At home, it was my first time trying the Club, and it was wonderful. The Omelette sat on my kitchen counter until the next day, and with a little nuking, it was very, very good.

Pretty good food, and service. I got the western omelette, it was perfectly portioned and fresh. The biscuits that came with it were really yummy :) I wish my boyfriends bacon was crispier but it was good nonetheless. I would return for sure.

The food here was ‘okay’. The pancakes they gave me were like rubber, but they were tasty. The BIGGEST problem with this place, is that there are HUGE flies… EVERYWHERE and on everything. It’s so absolutely gross.

Oh my word! The open faced turkey was amazing! They browned the turkey… which they roasted themselves. The portions size was HUGE! next time I will share a plate. Very friendly staff!

Exploring Richmond waiting our 4 hour bus layover and the reviews here looked good Told us to seat ourselves, waitstaff was very nice, food came out quick Nothing OMG but the food was very good and the atmosphere was cool Seemed as only one server for the whole place but she did pretty well considering. I’d stop by if ever in Richmond again

City Diner is a 5-star greasy spoon dinner! The service is great! The biscuits delicious! They keep the coffee flowing! I honestly can’t ask for a better breakfast joint. The price is a bargain.

I have passed this place a million times before deciding to have brunch here. I loved the small diner setting… the wait staff were so cheerful and pleasant, the wait time for the food was short, the food was great and they have Pepsi products(my fav) I will definitely be back! Oh and the food was reasonable priced with good sized portions. I left happy and full! The place was nice and clean as well…

It’s been a while since I had gone here we headed to city diner on a busy Sunday morning. The wait was no bad as everyone working moved fast to get the food out and tables turned quickly without making guest feel rushed. This was my lady’s first time here she enjoyed her over easy eggs and perfectly crisp bacon OJ was pulpy which we love. I ordered the Joseph and it was great with added cheddar cheese the pancakes stayed nice and warm as I enjoyed the bright perfectly cooked eggs. The best part was Erin out waitress she could be the best server in RVA and if you want to see how a pro operates go see her. Erin was extremely upbeat charming and attentive even with a line out the doors. The music was pumped up loud in a good way and we loved the grooves. Go for the food tell Erin what’s up !!!

These guys know what they’re doing. Generous portions, good prices, friendly and efficient staff and, most important, the best breakfast food in town(biscuits are homemade). If you’re looking for the perfect breakfast diner for your weekend routine, you just found it.

I have never had a bad plate of food here. Hungover brunches, breakfast before work or some lunch, this place hits the spot. Glad they accept credit cards now.

We found this place while in looking for a gas station in Richmond. We drove by at the exact moment our bellies told us we were hungry. The menu covers all of the expected diner repertoire, and it covers them well. The place even comes with the stereotypical waitresses calling everybody«Hun» while slinging coffee pots and pitchers of water. My wife ordered a plate of pancakes and eggs with bacon and home fries. All of it cooked perfectly. I ordered biscuits and gravy with two sunny side up eggs on top. My all time favorite breakfast. Some call it «Poor Do» and some call it «Biscuits and sawmill.» I just call it freaking delicious! The biscuits were pillowy soft and the gravy was fresh and delicious, with just a hint of sage lurking in the background. The runny egg yolks just gilded the Lilly. I loved it. My doctor will probably yell at me the next time I have an appointment but one has to make allowances for sheer pleasure once in a while. We plan on coming back here often.

Typical greasy spoon food, excellent service and prices. A group of runners came here very hungry and left very satisfied. Despite a full restaurant, our coffee mugs and water glasses stayed full and our orders came out exactly as requested and quickly. It’s your typical diner style food, which is difficult to mess up. I enjoyed the home fries in particular since they were extra generous with the sauteed onions in them. Beware that the«short stack» of pancakes might be short, but it’s pretty darn wide. Caught us by surprise. Of note is the breakfast special during the week– for $ 4.50 you get 2 eggs, meat, a side, and choice of bread. Now that’s a deal!

This is one of those character filled diner like places with good breakfast food. The prices are manageable, and the food reminds you of good, but not great, home cooked breakfast fare. That is not to put the food down, just to say if you don’t feel like cooking and you’re an average cook, you should stop by. Upon entering at about 2pm the place was packed. Once again, the food is good. Apparently there is a nice discount breakfast offered before 9am. I wasn’t even close but would definitely try to catch it if I was lived around Richmond.
