Eh… it’s Orvis. Some good stuff at a fair quality to price ratio. Other stuff you are paying for the right to advertise someone’s brand for them on your chest… because??? But that’s another issue. Of Orvis stores I have been in this is certainly one of the larger spaces and therefore has a very good selection. I tend to ‘shop’ online or in the catalog but like to buy face to face, if it is an option. I regularly buy Orvis fly fishing and dog gear and it is nice to have a good brick and mortar selection to touch before you buy. Orvis’ Trout Bum selection is unique but I would not have bought anything sight unseen, as an example. The people working the store are average, well intended, somewhat knowledgable. That is not a bad thing… just know what you are getting. I have come to terms that Orvis is not a fly-shop. It is a retailer that designs and sells some fly fishing stuff… not the same to me. Again, that’s ok… different retailers for different purposes… totally cool with that. They are PETFRIENDLY! That is huge for us as our pack is often with us and we like to socialize them. So even if you are just looking to acclimate your dogs to people and scenes this is a good one. And, by the way, they do sell Tempur-pedic dog beds. Your dogs will appreciate the chance to try before you buy! Our dogs love them(bad news is we have to now spring for a couple more). In summary, Orvis is the best you are going to get unless you have a specialty fly shop, or tack shop that carries some of the same brands such as Barbour. It has simply lost its lustre and cache, in my opinion. So three stars to me is fair… they do what they do well… but I can’t see any reason to give more than they deserve.
