We decided at the last minute to try this place out and were pleasantly surprised. I was recently diagnosed with a gluten allergy, so I was stoked to see so many delicious gluten-free options, including gluten-free buns for their burgers. We had the wings, and they were fabulous, easily some of the best we’ve had. The husband and I both enjoyed our burgers immensely, and the kids were happy with their selections as well. Service is a bit slow, but the food more than makes up for it.

We were in the mood for calamari and salads and we were not disappointed! First, the corn bread and beer bread with honey butter that is brought first are delicious. I could have made a meal of that. But I’m glad I didn’t! The calamari was delicious, and the salads were fresh and flavorful! Servers were wonderful. I wish I lived in Richmond so I could come regularly!

The savory grain is a nice /quaint place and had a great ambiance. The appetizer /grilled, stuffed jalapeño peppers were out of this world. The cocktails were good as well but had to wait forever for them. The main dishes were a bit underwhelming. The quail was nicely cooked but was very small and an overload of the risotto. Low on protein and high on carb. The rockfish was substituted with snapper. The fish was a bit dry, the grapefruit did not mesh well either. Came highly recommend, so harder on the review. Perhaps?

Absolutely delicious! A cool vibe with a unique menu that can cater to meat-lovers to vegans alike. Highly recommend getting the calamari appetizer. It comes with a sunny side up egg, chorizo, jalapeño peppers, shallots, and a marinara sauce that is to die for! I will be back.

Slow service from even seeing the hostess to getting drinks and ordering food. Staff seemed a bit disorganized. Took close to 40 mins to get drinks and place food order. The food(meat lovers omelette) was good but not great. Basically bacon, sausage and cheese wrapped up in a plain omelette. The falafel sandwich was also ok but nothing special. Since we had to wait close to 70 mins from seating to leaving, it wasn’t such a great experience.

While visiting Richmond, my friend and I came here for brunch. The restaurant is quaint with plenty of light, a pretty design, and smaller tables. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. The whole experience was very relaxing! We both had tasty Bloody Mary’s with pickled cucumbers(they usually have pickled green beans, which I wish I could have tried. I assume they were out). The coffee was good too, and came in a glass mug with the milk served in this cute little gravy boat type dish. Lots of really sweet touches here that make it an excellent date, family, or ladies brunch spot. I ordered the three-egg omelette with vegetables, which was the perfect size and enjoyable. The homemade habanero blackberry hot sauce gave it a great kick and extra layer of flavor. The fruit cup was fresh and light, with pieces of orange and grapefruit, though I’m told the type of fruit varies by season. The buttermilk biscuit was delicious, soft, and flaky. That definitely made the meal much heavier though, so it’s plenty of food, regardless of the diner’s appetite and size. Prices were reasonable. I’d come again!

Came here for dinner with a fellow Unilocaler(Rich S.) who had The Savory Grain on his list of places to try. I arrived first and was seated at a table, but was later told that the table was reserved and given to me by accident, so I ended up with two seats at the bar instead. When Rich arrived, we ended up just having our whole meal at the bar since no table opened up, plus, the restaurant got really crowded as time went on with a rush of diners entering. Our bartender/server was friendly and the interior was warm and cozy, albeit a bit dark. I ordered a gnocchi dish, was which not bad, but not amazing either. Prices moderate, with entrees $ 15+. Parking can be a little hard to come by since this is located right on Broad St., but not too difficult. The restaurant is not huge so be prepared for a wait if you come during peak meal times. Solid dinner, but not a very extensive menu and nothing extraordinary.

We went to the Savory Grain last night for the third time and it has not disappointed yet! Service has always been friendly and attentive. The menu has really great options, some unique and some old favorites. And the atmosphere is great … PLUS — Happy Hour! Last night we tried the crab dip and calamari. The calamari was served with an egg on top, and a spicy red tomato sauce at the bottom of the bowl(I am sure there is a more technical term), which was delicious! My husband and I both had the burger which was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. We added sides of the Honey Glazed Brussels Sprouts and the Artichoke and Leek Au Gratin which were both phenomenal. Our friends had the spinach salad and gnocchi which they raved about as well. They have wine on a tap, a great beer selection, and a long list of specialty cocktails. This place has quickly become a favorite and we will be back!

We went here with a VERY large group of people this Tuesday to celebrate some birthdays. There is a large area to the left of the entrance that we were able to take over. At 1st we had two rows of tables, but due to some last minute cancellations we were able to set the tables in a T-shape so we could all talk to each other. I started(and finished) with a glass of prosecco. Since we got there right at 7pm, they honored the HH price for my 1st glass — which was nice! Our party straggled in over the next 15 minutes or so. We had two servers who did a GREAT job of keeping people’s drink orders straight while we were still standing and mingling. I ordered the meatloaf and DH had lamb two ways. 1st of all, again our servers were GREAT with not only remembering everyone’s names, but making sure they all got the correct dinner and all within 5 minutes or less of the first set on entrees hitting the table. My meatloaf was the winner. The ketchup glaze was slightly spicy which gave it an entirely different dimension. I was a little disappointed in the mac and cheese that came with it. It was bland in comparison to the meatloaf. The beans were also just OK. DH loved his lamb, but he did wish he had ordered the meatloaf. When our servers brought the checks, they let everyone know that they had already added the gratuity, but we could add to it or take it off completely. I very much appreciated that they told us this vs. leaving us to discover on our own. All in all, we had a great time and we had AMAZING service for what a large(and somewhat boisterous group) we were.

Had the meatloaf sandwich and it was excellent. Comes out just like a burger with lettuce and tomorrow and their own sauce. Fries were fresh cut. Nice spot, small and will definitely try them for dinner. Check their hours though before you head out. They open 4pm-2am some nights. Open for lunch on others.

Dinner at Savory Grain was a hit with my theater group. We got there at 5 for an early dinner after a Saturday matinée, so on-street parking was easy, we were quickly greeted and seated. It was happy hour, so a wine pour for $ 4 was a hit too. The seating area had music and a muted TV, but it was quiet enough that we could comfortably sit and talk. The menu has plenty of vegetarian options for the one in our group. We loved the selection of sides, enough that all of us got soup for an appetizer and a selection of 3 sides for an entrée. The menu does not say it but sides are $ 4 and you can do 3 sides for $ 10, perfect for ladies wanting to eat a little lighter than a full entrée. The server offered a bread selection for the table, with a rich and semi-sweet beer bread and mini corn muffins, with soft butter on the side. I appreciate butter delivered at spreading temperature not so hard it breaks the muffin! I opted for the pork and apple chowder, it was very hearty with lots of carrots and potatoes too. The others were also happy with the squash bisque, minus the panchetta for the vegetarian.(The menu does list it as «Vegetarian Option» but it is in tiny brown print on a mottled card stock, very hard to see in muted restaurant lighting.) The sides — selections of glazed roasted brussel sprouts, wilted lettuce with a surprising kick of heat, gouda corn grits with a very smooth texture, cheddar mac and cheese, and an artichoke au gratin were all fantastic and very filling, although one person’s au gratin could have been cooked a little more, the veggies were a little on the crunchy side. All in all, a great stop with unique savory sides and comfortable atmosphere!

The Savory Grain is another great example of good Fan restaurants. I had calamari which sadly did not last long on my plate. I then had to endure the savory burger which again did not last long on my plate. As others have said, the cocktails/drinks are done right here and with the type of food they are serving I’m just glad I was able to get in and have a seat for a try. Staff, atmosphere, and the enjoyment of the other guest is all readily apparent. Score 1 for the Savory Grain.

Lunch for 7…6 adults and one child. Two of us had the fish & chips, one had the cheeseburger, one the chicken salad, another the Green fried BLT sandwich. I was told it was really good. My wife had two appetizers. A small salad and the onion rings were tasty… I got to try one. Outcome, my fish and chips were terrific. I also ordered a side of the Mac&Cheese…quite good. They use a white cheese. As always excellent service. We were not rushed and had an enjoyable lunch. The fish was outstanding and I had a slice of cheddar cheese added. All in all it was another terrific meal. We scored the large table in the back. That made it nice.

Ok, Savory Grain! You get a well deserved upgrade. I still very much enjoy the décor and service, but this time the food was so much better. First of all, the homemade bread that comes out before your meal is bananas. I completely devoured it and so did my bf. This time, I wasn’t all that hungry, so I decided to go with a soup and salad. I ordered the wedge salad and clam chowder. Both were amazing! The clam chowder was unlike any other clam chowder I’ve ever eaten. I wouldn’t even call it a chowder. It was more like a broth consistency rather than the creamy kind I’m used to. It was delicious! I tore it up. Then, I started working on the salad. Some bites were a little bitter, but it was an excellent wedge salad. My boyfriend got a fried chicken dish with grits and veggies. He said it was the most well-cooked chicken he’s ever had. I can vouch and definitely confirm that it was juicy and crunchy– just as it should be! The grits were phenomenal as were the veggies. Bravo! This is now in our regular rotation.

Broad Street itself is not exactly the most attractive spot in the world, so stepping from it to the inside of the Savory Grain is like day and night! Chic and classy, with great food, great table set up, and a live duet playing in the corner while we ate brunch! My only critique is wishing they had kept their menu more up to date. I had seen pumpkin pancakes as an option online, only to walk in so excited to try them and realizing they were a seasonal dish, with blueberry pancakes in their place. My Benedict meal certainly made up for it, but I am now very much looking forward to going back in the fall.
