I love Highlander BBQ! It’s the prefect little BBQ place! It is family owned/ran by the sweetest couple that always make you feel like family. My children really enjoy the decorations and history on the walls! We drive 30 minutes just to eat there every couple weeks. I nearly always get the pulled pork with slaw & fries. The pulled pork is perfect with a mixture of spicy vinegar & sweet bbq sauce. I also love that it is very affordable. Great people, prices & food!

Highlander Barbeque is awesome. Their pulled pork is the best I have ever had, and the ribs are melt-in-your-mouth good. They were perfectly cooked. The owners are local folks who have been making great barbeque for more than 20 years. I stop here every time I come through Roan Mountain.

Good stuff. Authentic bbq in new log building on the main drag(19). Large menu and good prices.

First time customer and probably last time. Most over cooked ribs I’ve ever tried. I’ve had jerky that was more tender. They were over cook by a few hours. Not tender at all. The highlander sauce was pretty good. Not impressed at all half rack lunch special was 10 $ with fries and drink… Maybe it was an off day but what a waste.

Excellent, I decided to try a smoked chicken wrap. The Chicken wrap was big and delicious. You could order the wrap several different ways. My husband had a BBQ platter and that too was wonderful. I will definitely be going back there

Try being a business owner neighbor and that’s when you’ll see just what a bully the owner is truly. Not sure why he feels compelled to be so aggressive — business seems good(the only one in this town so that’s not difficult) I pray every day for him. His wife is a doll but he seems to have anger issues beyond comprehension. Always wish great things for Highlander — no need to be so angry and inconsiderate, this behavior is rediculous and cowardly on his part.

We visited Highlander BBQ based on the reviews and the full parking lot. We enjoyed our pulled pork plates that came with yummy and fresh tasting baked beans, cole slaw and rolls. We enjoyed our meal and tried to go back again the next evening, but arrived around 7:30 and they were sold out and the restaurant was closed. So, be sure to arrive early!

I am from California and have relatives that live in Newland North Carolina; I also lived in North Carolina for a short time and have been to the old location before Darrell relocated this Restraunt down the Road just past the Tenn line. I recenently visited my Family a few weeks ago and could not stop thinking about going back for some good old Southern BBQ! The new location is quite larger than the old and seats more people as soon as we entered we were greeted with a warm welcome! The menu is still the same; I ordered the Pork Sparibs that were just taken off the smoker! They were amazing the secret to making this a wonderful meal is to slather your ribs with the«Spicy Viniger» they are amazing! I also ordered a side of Fried Pickle spears which were to die for and also the Chicken Wings also very tasty! Needless to say I could not finish my entire meal so Darrell the owner offered me togo containers for what I had left and also a container for the«Spicy Viniger» sauce! The staff here was so accomadating and friendly; I must say that what was also very impressive is to see Darrell the owner/Rib Smoker walk around to tables and make sure everthing was just wright just a very nice person! I was kinda sad that they ran out of the Grey T-Shirts that they sold but Darrell assured me that he was ordering more! So if you happen to be in the area stop by and have some good olé Southern BBQ! You cant beat the price the service and of course great food; I will Deff be back on my next visit! Also It would be great if they bottled and sold the«Spicy Viniger» suace I would of brought some back to Calif with me!

We are from Florida and were spending the winter in Roan Mountain. Highlander BBQ kept us happy and well-fed. I loved getting the Highlander Fries with half chicken/half pork and smothering them with buffalo sauce and spicy vinegar! We definitely miss this place. The staff was always nice and the food always came out fast and delicious!

My husband’s favorite food is BBQ, much to my dismay, because most places don’t offer non-pork eaters good options and it’s either bland, greasy or both. Highlander offered both a great pulled pork platter with slaw and absolutely deliciously seasoned beans(very unusual) as well as a chicken platter that suited me perfectly. The chicken was moist and tender, but still smokey which is hard to do without drying it out. The mild sauce had a little kick to it and I actually liked that better than the sweet sauce, to my surprise. The place also has things like spicy onion petals(pulled apart bloomin onion), corn dogs, sandwiches, etc. and a pretty big diner/BBQ menu. But we definitely enjoyed the food and the staff was very friendly and helpful to me, even though clearly we were visitors. There is no outdoor dining, but plenty of seats inside. I would give it 4.5 stars for the money and would definitely go back every time we’re up there.

Decent food, poor business practices. We pulled into the parking lot at 7:35pm, got out of the car and started towards the door and a big heavy set guy(cook ?) comes out grabs a sign and goes in and locks the door and turns off the neon OPEN sign. How rude can you get ? We walked up to the door and looked in and the few workers that were in there just stood around and looked the other way. Not a good way to treat good customers. We’ve eaten there before and like their BBQ, but strange hours of operation and rude employees. We won’t bother going back. Head down the road to the Whiteway Grill instead where the food is good and the service is MUCH better…
