Over the few years I’ve lived in Rochester, I’ve volunteered here about 5 or 6 times with varying degrees of satisfaction. Foodlink is a large regional food bank that distributes to over 450 centers with a goal of a hunger free community. Every time you go, you never know what type of work you are going to work. What I’ve enjoyed the most, was sorting food donations bins into the different categories like snacks, pasta and sauces. I’ve also helped get bulk orders palletized and ready for shipment. I love the feeling of giving back, don’t get me wrong. But working in Corporate America, the occasional lack of efficiency and effective use of volunteer time was sometimes frustrating. In the end though, the feeling of helping the less fortunate people of Monroe County and 10 surrounding counties makes the drive home feel great.
