This place carries mainly Chinese products. I saw little Japanese and Korean goods. Very reasonable and staff are friendly.

Hikari Foods and Grocery is a small, cramped Asian store. They have a limited selection of Asian ingredients, which can be a little pricey. What are you going to do when you live in a town like Rochester where the Asian population is only a little over 3% though? Produce is left out in boxes, so, unless you go on Tuesday when they get their weekly shipment, the fruits and veggies aren’t the freshest you can find in the area. The types of produce sold isn’t consistent year round. For example, they sold bananas during fall, but the last month or so they stopped having them available. I’ve never bought the meats here before because I’m not sure the sanitation; meats are left in basin tubs filled with ice. The buns near the cashier are too sweet and don’t have enough filling. The grocery store also sells household items like chopsticks and slippers. The staff is nice and helpful. They recognize regulars and sometimes have given me additional discounts. I know they speak English, Vietnamese and Mandarin. They might know Korean too, but I’m unsure. Overall, Service-7/10 Atmosphere-6/10(typical small Asian grocery store) Food-5/10(Not sure of sanitation and be sure to check expiration on shelf items.)

Hikari is where I go for Asian ingredients. Why? It’s cheap and they always have for what I’m looking. You’ll NEVER buy anything from the international aisle of Wegmans once you start shopping here because of the price difference and selection. The most important thing to know is that deliveries are made twice a week — Tuesdays and Fridays, I think. So, if you’re in the know, you’ll come on those days or the next day so you can get the freshest produce. In the warmer months, this includes seafood such as flounder, fresh(not frozen) shrimp, shellfish, etc. It also includes baked goods such as Chinese pastries, cookies, and cakes. I’ve scoped out a few of the other Asian groceries in town and Hikari is my favorite because, while cramped, it is well organized, is the cheapest, and has fresh stuff.

Hikari is an Asian grocery store with a variety of Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian products. Hikari is quite small and seriously cramped, and product packs the shelves from ground to ceiling. The aisles are tight and the lights are dim. Few labels are in English but the staff is very friendly and eager to help. There are some fresh fruits and vegetables in the front of the store along with large bags of rice. Freezers line the store, and there is one fish tank which was disappointingly empty. The majority of the store was devoted to raw ingredients rather than ready to eat selections. I felt that the store was organized in a logical manner with ingredients arranged by country of origin. Hikari is a cost effective alternative to Wegman’s and the selection is beyond all comparison. Hikari is a must visit for the avid amateur chef.
