Seneca Park is my go-to park when I want to get in a run or hike. It’s located nearby, and is quite beautiful despite the less than glamorous reputation the park has. The park is one designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, and so by its nature is well planned and inviting. The pond is filled with ducks and geese, and many people like to come and watch or feed them. The road within the park makes for a good running path. It’s open, and you can see what is going on around you but with considerably less traffic than other roads. The hiking trail is my favorite. Part of the Genesee Riverway Trail passes through the park, and you can take the trail out of the park and on to well worn trails that lead up to the old railroad bed path. From the park itself you can hike your way up to Rattlesnake Point and beyond on the east side of the river. In Autumn, the lack of leaves actually makes for the best hiking in my opinion. The views of the river and opposite bank are greatly improved, and there is a significantly smaller quantity of insects. There have been times where I have been a little nervous about visiting the park alone. Actually, I don’t like to hike through here alone despite the fact that there are neighborhoods and houses backing up to the trail. The main park around the pond is not typically a problem, but there have been incidents. There is now a booth at the entrance to the park. I’ve seen a guard there occasionally, but not always. I’m not sure of the purpose either. Perhaps it’s to keep an eye on who is coming in and out and for what purpose. I like this park, and I come here regularly. Sometimes I think it is such a shame that other people can ruin your experience or use of a place. But with continued used and patrons who are vigilant we can enjoy the beauty of this land we have so close to home.

It is one of the most beautiful and refreshing parks I have ever been to. The park extends along the Genesee River and for the most part overlooks the river. There are many trails in the park, some of which lead down right to the river. Apart from the river, there is also a lake in the middle of the park(Trout lake) which is full of waterfowl including a beautiful swan! The scenery is just worth a million dollars! Miles and miles of beauty to walk through, bike and enjoy. There are also several pavilions in the park which would make a perfect location for an outdoor party. It is just the perfect combination of meadows and trees which makes it look like an oasis of serenity amidst the hustle and bustle of the city! Just like a piece of heaven! There is something about this park that makes it one of my favorites in Rochester.

If you keep driving down the road that the zoo is on there are trails that lead you right down to the river, you are close enough to the zoo that you can hear and see the lions and elephants. There are grills, shelters, pavilions and playgrounds. Great place to cross country ski in the winter too.
