I had a very negative experience at Tangent’s. My friends and I purchased a Groupon for classes and we were very excited to go. We called ahead, reserved spots in the class, and donned our booty shorts. We were all set. As we were told to do, we came into the studio 15 minutes before class only to find the owner closing up. Since it was a Friday night and there was no one else who had reserved spots in the class, she decided to go ahead and cancel. Apparently our small group wasn’t important enough to override the plans she had made for later that night. Why she would make plans during a time that she was offering a class astounds me, but she did it nonetheless. Thankfully we were refunded our money via Groupon, but I would definitely never go back. I have had a lot of fun at the Aerial Arts of Rochester classes, though. Check out my review on their page!

I have been wanting to try this for a while and finally bought a Groupon I saw. I bought ten classes for $ 39, which is a really great deal. Unfortunately, life started to get in the way and I could not start my classes as soon as I wanted and I was approaching the expiration date of my Groupon. So I lit a fire under my butt and got everything going. At first, I tried to call Tangent’s to get information, but no one answered my call so I went to the website and filled out the info section and got a call back within an hour. I explained that I had 10 classes but not 10 weeks and asked if I could do the intro class twice a week to finish it off and asked about clothing and shoes for the class. I was told that it was okay if my Groupon expired before I finished because there was a good chance I would not want to come more than one time a week until my body got used to it(This is very true). I was also told heels are not required and the best way to go is bare foot. Also I have been wearing very short yoga shorts I got from Aerie and a tank top for classes which I have been very happy with. For those struggling to get to the class, her directions are correct so maybe you did not comprehend properly. Go to village gate park in the back and go in through the B entrance. Walk in and look for a door to your right that will lead to a set of stairs. The Tangent’s sign is on the door. Once you are up the stairs you are at Tangent’s… No issues. Once you make it there, there is a set of green double doors you can enter to get into Tangent’s. It is all one room though so when you enter, you are in a class area — Be courteous to others still taking their class. There are chairs you can sit on to wait for your class as well as lockers in the back of the room if you want or need them. Once you are in the class area, you will sign in or fill out a form if you have never been there and you can get started on your class. This is a very difficult workout. You are using all of your muscles to do some fun and crazy things. The only thing I have to say is take it seriously. If you really want to do this but feel you will giggle a lot if you are with a friend, don’t go with a friend. Everyone else is there for a work out so keep it that way. The class is fun and you learn a good amount of moves and the instructor will go over them more than once and help you throughout. She will also give you tips on how to correct things you are doing wrong. It really is a great class to learn something fun and workout at the same time. The next day after your class, especially your first, you are going to want to crawl under a rock for a bit. I was super sore throughout my neck, back, arms, core, and legs. This class is seriously a workout of your whole body. I also found that I had bruises on my thighs, legs and the tops of my feet. I am sure the more classes I do, the easier it will be and the less bruises I will get. Overall, I am very happy and will probably stay after I finish my ten classes especially since it is such a great work out for my whole body.

Village Gate is a really rad space – I used to live right down the street from there when I was in ROC full-time – and it’s businesses like this one that have helped to revitalize the area while keeping it local, quirky, and creative. And Tangent’s is certainly all those things, in addition to being a hard core athletic experience. It can be hard to find things within Village Gate, so if you’re new to the area, arrive early – the center can be a little quiet and doesn’t have a lot of signs on the inside. Tangent’s is on the second floor, which doesn’t get as much pedestrian traffic. I am keeping my fingers crossed that more and more cool things appear in this area. Pole aerobics is not for everyone – and you may end up with bruises in some pretty unusual places at first – but this studio makes it easy for you to try it for yourself to see if it’s right for you. You can join an intro class at any time, and you can even host a party there for you and your friends, which I totally recommend. One of my most athletic friends was really surprised by her first pole class – she did really well but was stunned by how much pole aerobics engages your core. Just a warning that you may not feel sexy right away, but that will come in time!(I have not tried any of their sexier classes, such as art of lap dance… but they sound intriguing!) I do wish the website were a bit more clear with to schedule – it’s a bit buried after you read the owner’s bio. It’d be nice to have schedule on its own page, so that it could be easily viewed or printed. But don’t let that deter you – the instructors at Tangent’s are total experts in pole arts, and they’re also discreet and incredibly helpful to newcomers.

I haven’t even made it to a class. :(I’ve been dying to try this place but contacting the owner or anyone that works here? Is pretty impossible. I’ve got a really crazy hectic schedule, so anyone that has loads of time — maybe can hunt and be persistent. I just don’t have that kind of time or energy. Couldn’t find this place to save my life the first time i went. I finally found it. But now can’t get in touch with the owner for a time that our schedules match up. So sad — looked like a really fun class and i’ve purchased like 6 groupons lol — oh but the owner did tell me that i can no longer use them. Profit overcomes customer experience?
