We are always on the hunt for a good taco place as my husband thinks he is to eat them on a consistent basis. We went here on a Wednesday as they have $ 1 tacos(chicken, pork and steak only). The first time we sat down with our two little ones who devoured the complimentary chips and salsa. We thought everything was great, except the chicken was a little dry. The next time we visited, we took our order home. They give you plenty of everything to make sure your experience is short of dining in(minus chips). We had all steak tacos and they were delicious. We will be frequenting this place, especially on Wednesdays :)

Came here the other night & must say the other reviews are spot on! Huaraches are the way to go here. I didnt get the chirozo as recommended but instead pastor«the marinated pork.» Wife had the asada huaraches.(Steak). I went there to get carryout. Place was mobbed at 6pm on a Monday. I waited a bit. Disappointed no horchata. Carryout was fairly quick. Cashier was a very pleasant girl. Still amazed at the huaraches which are homemade soft corn tortilla shells. Whats interesting is they are not your standard 6″ or 12″ but a size different. They are an odd size which makes you realize they’re homemade. Food was great! They put onions & limes on the side. I like that cause you can put extra hot sauce on then cut it slightly w/the lime. Not sure but feels authentic. I want to dine in next time. As previous reviewers stated, its cash only. They do have an ATM there in case you forget that. I did also have the quesadillas which were slightly above avg but nothing special. The prices are well below average which is nice if you have a group. Wasnt looking for margaritas and didnt see any. Small parking lot on side but plenty of street parking. I’d give it a 4 ½ of 5 stars. If they had horchata, margaritas, and a better reputation for other menu items it could be a 5 but, definitely working checking out!

Awesome place! make sure you order the chorizo huaraches they are HUGE, and very tasty. The place is small and most of the time you have to wait some time for someone to take your order but is well worth the wait for great Mexican good. Only thing that I didn’t like is that is CASH only but is ok I guess.

Great huaraches. I ordered al pastor with no onions but they still put it on the side which I am thankful for. They were almost like caramelized onions

Great food and service. It’s a small place, so I usually eat and run as there are customers waiting to be seated. Prices are below average b

Just stopped in tonight in our way to Indiana. This place was legit. Very much a hole in the wall. Tacos taste like the real street tacos you can get in Mexico. Only warning is it is CASHONLY.

First if all, it’s in a hilarious neighborhood. If you feel confident strolling through downtown Rockdale at night without being strapped, I applaud you. Once you get past that it’s all gravy. The food is cheap and relatively fresh, but their homemade salsas are shwag. It’s cash only, which means one of two things. They are a money laundering operation, or they’re a bunch of rebellious hipsters. I’m hoping it’s the latter. The hours of operation are frustrating, I’ve been left out in the cold more than a few times with this place. Despite all of the pitfalls associated with this place, it’s easily the best mexican place in a 10 mile radius.

Not a bad place, was really busy so that’s always a good sign. Pastor was a little dry and not to par but the rest of my party enjoyed the steak tacos. They serve 3 different hot sauces with the chips, all were decent. Wed is dollar tacos.

No horchata?! Rockdale is like a quiet movie set for something set in a deserted, wild west town. Rockdale is just south of Joliet and might as well be a part of Joliet. I discovered Rockdale when I had to pick up a package from the UPS facility. Curiosity led me to searching for restaurants in Rockdale, and that’s how I found El Comal. As I already mentioned, they don’t have horchata. What the FF? They do have a variety of Jarritos sodas though, so I got the pineapple. My husband and I had lunch here on Memorial Day, I was surprised how busy this spot was on a Monday afternoon. While we were eating, lots of people would come and go, and at one point, all of the tables were full. The food is good. I had 2 tacos: one steak, chicken, and pork. All three were equally good, served on soft corn tortillas with the customary cilantro and onion. Chips and salsa are complimentary, and there are 3 salsas to choose from. We also ordered the guacamole, which was served in a styrofoam bowl. The food is good, authentic, and great for a casual lunch or dinner. Prices are great too, I think the tacos were only $ 1.25 each. Cash only! If you live in Plainfield, drive the few extra miles to El Comal, because I still stand by the fact that there is no truly good Mexican food in Plainfield, especially tacos.

They have ok tacos– one step up in authenticity from the«burrito» chains. The huaraches are what you want to get! $ 1 Taco Wednesdays, and well, you get your moneys worth.

I stopped in here today for a few quick tacos, and overall the food was good. It wasn’t the best I have ever had, not even the best in the area. It was just good. I will not be returning however because of the amount of dirt on the walls and ceilings. If there is this much dust and grime right in Plain sight above my head, makes me wonder how much of it is not in my sight. I had high hopes for this place, but I refuse to eat anywhere where I have to check my food for dust bunnies

I know my mexican food, so when I go somewhere the bar is set pretty high. This place met and exceeded my expectations! Great service, everyone was so courteous and I ate more than I should have! There’s 2 things to do in Joliet, go race at Autobahn Country Club and eat good food at El Comal! Orale!

I have heard good things about El Comal for quite some time and finally got to try it today. I was very happy with the restaurant for the most part. El Comal is located in Rockdale, IL on a street that is famous for being in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bars on one street(or something like that). So the neighborhood is somewhat sketchy, but if you can past that it is definitely worth a stop. It was slammed at noon when we arrived, not an open table in the place. Quite a mix of blue and white collar workers which tells me that this place is not a secret to those in the know in Joliet. I managed to read a few reviews while standing in line and kept seeing comments about the huaraches. Now I’ve eaten at a hundred different Mexican places and one thing that I thought was odd is that every place has pretty much the same selections on thier menu. How the hell have I never heard of a huaraches??? I ordered the Tripas Huaraches and a Mixed Huaraches(steak, pork and chorizo). I give them both a solid A. The best explanation I can give you is a really long soft taco that isn’t rolled up and the taco shell is home made and unlike any taco I’ve ever had. Now, the salsa and the beans and rice leave a lot to be desired. Had some of the sides been adequate I would have definitely given EL Comal a five star review! Give it a shot, you wont be dissapointed!

I have had the privilege of finding this hidden gem about 4 years ago when I worked nearby. Carlos and his staff have truly created a masterpiece. It does not matter what you order because everything is Amazing! The quality of ingredients is second to none. What sets Tacos El Comal apart from the competition is their hueraches, which is hardly found in authentic Mexican cuisine. What makes the huerache unique is that it is larger than a taco and has a sweet, corn/flour hybrid fluffy tortilla. furthermore, Tacos El Comal is one of a kind because of the salsa. The salsa has flavor that I have never tasted at any other authentic Mexican restaurant ever!!! Particularly The red salsa has a smoky flavor great with steak. Carlos, the owner Is a very friendly and is always working alongside his coworkers, and interacting with customers. Carlos takes pride in getting to know his customers and community. Do not be surprised if you are the only individual there that speaks english, which I think is a good thing because you know it’s authentic. Another key feature is that it’s super cheap. For 6 bucks a big guy like me can get full and still have quality. My wife and now live an hour away and still make trips to come here. Bottom line: if you are looking for quality food and casual dining with a good culture and sense of community than this is the place for you. If you are a Pepes type of person looking for happy hour than this is not your place. OHANDBRINGCASH, NOCARDSACCEPTED!!!

Not a lot of lunch options here in j-town, so we decided on Mexican for a change and hit up this little gem in Rockdale. This looks like your typical hole in the wall, no frills, CASHONLY taqueria but oh my, it is sooo not run of the mill!!! The specialty here are the huaraches, which is pretty much a long, HUGE taco. But what sets this place apart from the others? FRESHTORTILLAS!!! They make it from scratch!!! You can’t find that ANYWHERE!!! I ordered a steak(asada) hurache and a gordita with chicharron guisado(stewed pork skins in a very spicy sauce) All delicious and very cheap!!! My husband had al pastor and lengua and he was quite pleased with his choices. Spanish and English are spoken here for all my non-bilingual friends. I was being nosey and looked at other peoples plates at I saw some delicious looking omelettes with their fresh tortillas on the side and some very good looking burritos. Can’t wait to go back!
