Winnebago County Division of Animal Services

I was extremely disappointed with the way that I was treated during the adoption process of my pet. After being approved for adoption, I asked one the staff members what the necessary paperwork would be that I would need to provide. They informed me that I needed a modified version of my lease stating that my landlord allows pets, and that I have paid the deposit for pets to my landlord.
When I returned home to gather the paperwork I needed, my room mate (who was in possession of the lease) wasn’t home. So, I called back to Animal Services and they explained that although they had told me I needed the lease that as long as I got a written receipt from my landlord that they would call him to verify the information. When I arrived back at Animal Services, I gave them my paperwork and she took one look at the paperwork and literally threw it at me and told me that it was unacceptable and that I was lying and had forged the receipt. The lady that had told me it was acceptable to bring a receipt also came out and started yelling at me because I had not told her that someone else had informed me to bring my lease. Even though it was her job to know what paperwork for me to bring. I was so shocked that I didn’t know what to say and I left and came back when I found my room mate and got the lease from him.
When I returned AGAIN the same woman who threw my paperwork at me sarcastically congratulated me on finding my lease. At this point I just wanted to get this over with and be as cooperative as possible. When we were done, she told me my dog needed to be neutered and that they would call me between 4 and 5 the next day to let me know when he was ready to be picked up.
The next day came and around 4:30 I thought it was strange that I hadn’t received a call yet so I called them. I explained the woman on the phone that I had been waiting for a call to come get my dog and I was checking to see if he was ready yet. She responded with, «Oh you must have misunderstood we don’t make calls for pick ups and we close at 5.» I told her I was leaving right away and I would be there as soon as possible. It was 4:57 when I pulled up to the facility and I told her I was coming right in to pick him up. She then proceeded to lock the doors on me. Through all of this I remained calm and polite, and was still treated like garbage. I will never adopt from this shelter again. I have never felt so disrespected by a group of people in my entire life. After this I had other friends telling me of similar experiences like mine. I don’t care how hard your job is; you NEVER treat people the way I was treated.
