Very well curated but I feel like I should show my bank account balance before I start looking around — then I might at least get a ‘hello.’ There’s a balance between letting someone look around a bit before checking in to see if they need help and ignoring them completely. They’re still finding that balance. Or not.

Black Parrot is one of my all-​time favorite stores. In fact, it’s always worth a trip to Rockland just to see the latest treasures: everything from beautiful purses to chic clothing and shoes and well crafted brushes from Germany. As for some comments about stand-​offish employees, I couldn’t disagree more. I always find the sales satff to be extremely helpful and responsive. Guess what I love most is the understated elegance. Sure wish there was something like it in Cambridge, MA.

Much like Cindy L wrote, I will NEVER go back there due to the incredibly rude customer service. A woman (I think the owner?) made it absolutely clear she had no interest of me being in the store (funny, being it was a Saturday in February during a blizzard). Unfortunately, I also used to frequent their new restaurant Fog (including have a 25 person private dinner there), but now knowing it’s controlled by the same owners, I will never frequent Black Parrot or Fog again. It was literally one of the worst customer experiences I’ve ever had in my life.

Ok, this store is so cost prohibitive I can’t believe it. BUT, when they have sales, they have the most fantastic sales and the finest quality clothes.
the store is very artsy and set up nicely. They even sell soaps, shoes and tea, yes they sell tea. I bought some… expensive. Good tea though.
OH and yeah, they have issues with clothes being hung properly. My thing with that is, hey, you take it down you put it back BUT, when there are little signs that say «please fold clothes» Uh, no, that isn’t my job, that is yours. Unless you pay me, I don’t fold. I put back as neat as I can where I got it, but no folding.

San Francisco, CA
If you told me I’d find a store like this (carrying everything from Lemlem to to Boy by Band of Outsiders to MM6 to Jean Yu) in the middle of Portland, Maine, I would never believe you. Probably the most well-​edited, avant-​garde collection of clothing north of NYC, and the owner is super nice as well. Space is airy but comfortable with unexpected touches like dyed sheep skin rugs scattered across the blonde hardwood floors. Love!

At the urging of my sister, I checked this place out on my last trip to Portland. Absolutely beautiful space. I read on a website that the building used to be an old book repository from the 1800s. There were soaring windows, gorgeous wood floors running the length of the shop and some great offerings both in modern apparel and house wares. Vanessa Bruno and Lutz and Patmos to name a few. It was really a treat to browse in there. If I had not already splurged on about ten other things that day, I would’ve definitely also splurged in there. Sigh. Well, at least I know it’s there for next time.

What a terrific clothes selection! Let me say this: Living in San Francisco for two years, I often found myself empty-​handed in favorite boutiques, thinking, «I’ll just wait until I can get to the Black Parrot.» I’m not quite sure who does the buying, but there is always something new & unique from a recent show or new designer — at a mix of prices (well, a little pricy but worth it…) Many well-​known brands (which I am forgetting right now.) are carried in addition to only-​at-​the-​Black-​Parrot finds. Good for everything from formal dresses, lingerie, ad jewelry to stylish jeans, t-​shirts and sweaters.
