I love Peachey’s and try to stop here whenever I’m in Parke County. It’s an Amish-run grocery store and a perfect place for so many things that it’s hard to know where to begin! Maybe I should just list some of the staples that I pick up when I’m there: Herbs and Spices. Just about anything I’ve ever heard of, and much more — usually in solid or ground form. Also includes spice mixtures for everything from barbecue to bean soup. Flour. Again, you name it and they’ve got it. Bread flour, cake flour, corn, coconut, rice, rye, spelt, and semolina. They’ve got gluten-free flour, and they’ve got gluten(you know, just plain gluten, which, if you’re not allergic, is a great addition to nearly any bread mix). Basically, this is a place for all your baking needs, whether your making it from a mix or from scratch. Plus, lots of other basics like sugar and salt. Cheese and Meat. Yes, don’t forget the refrigerated room in the back. Do-It-Yourself(DIY) supplies. Cheese cloth, beef jerky seasoning, pickling spices, saltpeter, etc. If you’re making homemade cheese, corned beef, or cold cuts, they’ve got it. In fact, I haven’t looked yet, but the whole reason I’m thinking about Peachey’s now is that I need to get the tools necessary to tap my maple trees to make syrup, and Peachey’s is where I’ll start. Granola, candy, beans, nuts, chip mixes, pretzels … everything from dried fruit to dried wasabi peas. The best beef, chicken, and vegetable bouillon I’ve ever had — and yes, I suspect it’s made by them or someone they know, from local animals that probably live better lives than the ones who end up on the shelves of Kroger or Marsh. Pasta. You know, egg or wheat, any size, shape, or color. Unique sodas and soft drinks. From root beer to birch beer … basically, any kind of «beer» that you can drink while driving. And believe it or not, that’s just the beginning. I think it’s fair to say that Peachey’s has everything except a telephone. Maybe that’s a reason to just check it out for yourself.
