My father-in-law passed away in the middle of the night at the nursing home(in Rockville) and my husband called Pumphrey’s in Rockville at their suggestion so he was duly picked up and transported. My father-in-law has always been adamant about wanting a simple cremation so we thought it would be straightforward when we went by the funeral home during business hours. The funeral home was very stately and the representative was sympathetic and personable and asked us a lot of questions but he was really building up to the sales point — approximately $ 4300 for a cremation and related services(death certificate etc). Ouch!!! We immediately asked if we could get FIL out of there and the answer was yes after paying $ 400(for pickup from the nursing home). We called several other funeral homes and non funeral home affiliated cremation services and found fees vary TREMENDOUSLY for approximately the same services. More than 1 funeral home offered fees in the $ 1500 to $ 2000 range for a similar package offered at Pumphrey’s so my advice is to shop around before the body is picked up — funeral homes are like anything else — sometimes you want to pay more for what you perceive as more service and that’s fine but if you don’t want to let the funeral industry take advantage of your grief then shop around so you can make an informed decision.
