I have been going to Dr. Malkemus for about 9 years, or so. I chose him, after moving back into the area, because my previous dentist office did not offer conscious sedation and he was also planning to retire. I have always had issues with my teeth, and for that reason a dentist is lucky to have me– I’ve had to shell out a lot of money. On that score, I did initially compare Dr. Malkemus with a couple of other dentists in the area, price wise. He was neither the least or most expensive. More importantly, the extensive work that I needed was performed with care and to my satisfaction. It is all holding up perfectly. This includes repair/replace broken caps and repair of sunken old metal fillings, a root canal, preparation and aftercare for 3 implants required(no permanent teeth after loss of primary teeth). I was steered clear of having the fourth one done since the primary tooth is holding strong and problem free. I actually credit Laura, the dental hygienist with my(still new to me) continued and current dental health. She did everything she could think of(rinses, flosses, dental irrigating device, etc.) to get me up to snuff with at-home care. For cleanings, we used various methods to make me comfortable(to say that I was scared is an understatement): sedative, numbing agents, plastic planer… These days, I need none of that. It’s been a long road, but I’m finally the person who leaves a routine cleaning and check up with a good report for a good 6 years + now. Because of this, I hardly ever see Dr. Malkemus anymore, and it’s very brief when I do. This office, and everyone in it, has truly been good to me. They are kind, concerned, helpful and respectful and they never give up on me, even though they have to attempt to contact me time and again to come in for my checkup and cleaning twice a year. Old habits and fears die hard!

After newly moving to the area in the early 90’s, I went to Dr. Malkemus for an exam and teeth cleaning. He advised me to replace my one crown and 7 fillings for new ones. The estimate was for thousands of dollars. Wanting a second opinion, I went back to my old dentist, even though he was 60 miles away, to ask his opinion. He said my dental work was in good shape and do not need to be removed unless they cause a problem. It is now 25 years later, and 6 of my old fillings are still going strong. Only one had to be replaced with a crown a few years ago. It turns out Dr. Malkemus was wrong. I shudder to think that I would have paid thousands of dollars, not to mention hours in his dentist chair, unnecessarily. And I shudder to think I would have lined his pocket with thousands of dollars at my and my insurance company’s expense. It would NOT have benefitted me in the least, but it would have benefitted Dr. Malkemus immensely. Unless he has changed his ethics over the years, you can see where his priorities are. Run away as fast as you can! My only regret is that I did not Unilocal this years ago.
