*So I’m being threatened by someone that I assume is the owner claiming that a lawyer is looking at my review and it is unfounded because the health department didn’t contact them about the food poisoning. I’m not sure about anyone else, but when I get food poisoning from a resturant I typically simply stop eating there and possibly provide an appropriate review. I have never contacted the health department about food poisoning.* Be afraid, be very afraid. So I have been here for breakfast a few times in the past and based on those experiences I try to avoid this resturant. Maybe its the run down interior or the poor looking sanitation of their buffet or maybe its that they serve bacon which has become so burnt and crispy no that it’s hard enough to break your teeth… no seriously I broke a tooth on their bacon, but this is not a restaurant i have ever wanted to try for lunch. Yet earlier this afternoon I decided to throw caution to the wind as they say and meet a friend at Troy’s barbeque for a quick lunch. When I first walked through the door, at just after noon, someone from 30 feet away yelled across the nearly empty restaurant that I was to grab a seat in any one of the many empty tables. Soon after I sat down the waitress arrived and asked if I was having the buffet and then proceeds to list off the habdfull of items on said buffet. Thinking that seemed like a good idea I took the pleasant waitress up on her suggestion and ordered the buffet while my friend ordered a barbeque sandwich. The buffet was said to consist if country fried steak, fried chicken breasts(I thought), green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, some desert, and a salad bar. After getting a look at the actual buffet and food items I had serious second thoughts about my choice to not order from the menu. But I stuck with it and decided to grab a plate and make the best of it. I went to the country fried steak which was clearly not homemade. There were four to six sad small uniformly shaped pieces of steak of which I took two and poured a little of their brown gravy over the meat. The fried chicken breasts I had expected were not to be found and instead there were two… yes two… fried chicken wings. Those wings clearly had been there for some time and so they would remain there for some more time. The mashed potatoes also looked to be out for sometime and did not make the cut to the big leagues that was my lunch plate. Finally there was the green bean casserole which looked like any green bean casserole that had been sitting out for an hour and half, but I have been to enough thanksgivings and putlucks to know that it takes along time for canned mushroom soup mixed with canned green beans to go bad and opted for a small scoop. This left the salad bar and the cup to maybe cup and half of lettuce, yet I managed to put together a passable little salad on the same small plate as the two tiny pieces of steak and delicate scoop of green beans and all with room to spare. Now its time to try this less than appetizing plate of food. I started with the least offensive item… the salad… will edit more after dinner… never got back editing because food poisoning set in. Avoid! Avoid at all costs.

Excellent service. As a Californian, I am not used to super nice people. Great place for a group. Several options so you can find something for everyone. We came for breakfast and nobody left hungry.

I visited here on 7÷27÷2015 while visiting from California. It is a large place. The counter people were very nice. I had the pulled beef. It was delicious and moist. The sauce was also very good. I also had a small side salad. It was inexpensive(under $ 11.00). The portion size was good as well. I would certainly recommend this place for large gatherings and I will visit again on my next trip.

Ended up at Troy’s BBQ after an hour &15 min drive to Rome, Georgia. The beau works in Rome, so after picking him up from work on a Saturday am we stopped into Troy’s as they were the only thing open for breakfast around 9am in this small rural town. Super friendly staff !! The owner and wait staff were very attentive and pleasant, which made us feel welcomed! The décor inside has a vintage touch. Old memorabilia and picture frames from the original store front were on display. The food was a classic southern breakfast. We opted for the breakfast buffet($ 10) which had something for everyone. All you can eat breakfast and inclusive drinks?! Who does that anymore! My favorite were the flaky butter biscuits and the bacon! The bacon have me a nice pork rind feel which i prefer. Although I don’t plan to be in this area often, I would come back every time I was. They also self proclaimed to have the best smoked meat in town. So Troys might offer an even better lunch experience! Simple food done right!

For openers, if you believe the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials — then this isn’t it. But then if you found Troy’s Bar BQ by accident(which we did) or after reading this, then you’re in for some good barbecue — or, as they put it, Bar B Q. The place has a long history in Rome and the Wessons have been smoking and seating at this location now for six years. Located in a strip mall, Troy’s is one of those all three meals a day places that probably tries to be all things to too many people when barbecue is really what they do well. Very well as a matter of fact. And from the Brown Shoe Gourmet’s perspective, Troy’s is one of the very few barbecue joints we’ve discovered where the sides are as good as the ‘cue. But first, let’s talk about three of the Big Four. Their smoked chicken tops the list as their best of best. Full flavor(read: you can taste the rich smoke flavor) and yet the meat is very moist. Hard to do but they do. The ribs at Troy’s are smoked using a homemade rub that, combined with full smoke saturation(hickory and oak), makes them better than just really good. They err by leaving the membrane on which can make chewing an occasional challenge — and they came to the table over heated which means they likely cooked some more while waiting to be ordered. Troy’s pulled pork came(in generous serving) moist delicious and full flavored. Sorry no one at the table ordered their beef. They have a couple sauces, one a thick molasses type, the other a red vinegar based — neither objectionable or exceptional, both likely store bought. They were out of their hand cut fries late in the day, but the reaction to the sides selected at our table ran from exceptional(finely diced not-too-sweet slaw as well as the mac & cheese) to very, very good(baked beans with chunks of pork) to just really good(turnip greens and green beans) to fair to middlin’ Brunswick Stew which is one of those things where everyone has their preferences; Troy’s Brunswick was basically pureed pork with a few corn nib-lets and not a heckuva lot of flavor. Then there’s the dessert which we were gently nudged to trying by a very attentive server: homemade pecan pie with a generous dollop of ice cream. Even better than she described. Troy’s, like most good barbecue places, is family run. He makes sure the rub’s right and the meat’s moist, she makes sure the customers are greeted with the small town warmth that is Rome, Georgia and served with generous helpings. The place itself has metal signs on the walls of products of years ago, a few pictures showing Troy’s heritage and spotlessly clean. Parking is not an issue Truth be told, wish Unilocal allowed 4.5 Stars because that would be this rating. What keeps them from five? Troy’s needs to make sure it’s warming oven doesn’t cook the food yet again, peel that thick membrane off the ribs they’d just started serving the week we invaded, think about creating a couple sauces as good as their rub and maybe do something to make their stew stand out a bit.
The bottom line is that Rome isn’t one of those places you typically pass through going somewhere else, but if you ever there, find Troy’s and enjoy some very good barbecue(check out the Brown Shoe Gourmet’s reviews other barbecue across the country) and a wide selection of sides every bit as good as the ‘cue. Don’t know about their pancakes or French toast at breakfast etc., I’ll leave that to others, but for someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue, Troy’s was quite a find.
