Had dinner here while we waited for our plane and other places had a wait list. Had to wait for 10 mins before anyone came and asked us what we need to start with. We ordered Veggie omelette, fries and wahoo fish burger. The omelette arrived without any veggies, the fish seemed like it was deep fried directly out of the freezer and the lettuce that came with it had gone bad. When we asked about the veggies on the omelette she said«Oh let me check», took the plate and did not return for 5 mins nor given an update even though she walked past our table twice or thrice. We went near the kitchen and asked her to cancel the order. While this was going on they lost close to 10 – 15 customers since none of the staff greeted the folks waiting to be seated, Avoid this place like the plague and go else where.

How can you not got to this place? it has great location and awesome coneys done right! If you go to National Coney during the lunch time shift its easy to get lost in the sauce and the service won’t be as good as the food is. During the midnight/early morning shift(11pm-7am) you will get exceptional service(but they will only serve coneys and fries at this time) and great convo from the guys behind the counter. They also are really nice to the homeless and let them sit in the restaurant and sometimes give them a coney or two so they won’t starve. Pay it a visit if your ever walking down Michigan ave

I was at the Detroit airport with plenty of time to spare. I got there exactly 2 hours early and made it through check in and security in record time. It was 6am, and I was starting to get hungry. I didn’t want to spend too much money. I thought about a sausage biscuit from McDonalds, but of course they don’t have the dollar menu in airports, so everything seemed a little high. Then I found this little diner. They had a breakfast special for only $ 5.99, so I decided it was worth it to have a sit down meal. I chose the breakfast special, which comes with two eggs anyway, choice of bacon, sausage, and ham, hash browns, and toast(white, wheat, or rye). I also got a cup of coffee. It was somewhat better than a typical diner. They serve wings by the pound rather than by the wing. I thought that was odd(maybe that’s just me). My meal was good. I got wheat toast, two eggs over easy, hash browns, and sausage links. Everything was good. It was typical diner food, and typical diner quality. It was a good deal, especially since I was in an airport.

Some need to clean this place! I’m not impressed with anything that they have. The food is ok at best. I can’t say any thing good about National. Sorry Clean your stores

The boyfriend and I hung out here before our last flight. They have beer AND vegetarian chili cheese fries! We were in heaven, these were some of the best chili-cheese fries I’ve ever had! Flavorful bean chili, tangy cheese and crisp, freshly fried fries. A trifecta. National Coney has a much nicer environment than the other restaurants in McNamara terminal. The waitstaff was friendly and didn’t mind us hanging out there after we had finished eating. I live near a National Coney but I don’t think they have the veggie chili cheese fries on their menu, sadly. If so, I know we’d be heading there when the craving hits. Mmm, I’m feeling it now…

Their gyro was good but I had hoped for it to be a bit larger.

If you grew up going to fancy restaurants, you might not think much of National Coney Island. But if you grew up in any big city and you like street food like NY or Chicago, you will like National. I had the Coney Combo. The hot dog was spicy, with natural casings that snap when you bite into it. Fries were good, not great. For an airport it was pleasant surprise to find good hot dogs. The counter girls were nice and friendly, so I had to double check if I was in Detroit.

There are two National Coney Islands in the McNamara(former Northwest… now Delta) Terminal. One is a sit down diner style(they offer takeout service there too) up near gate 46; and the other is a walk up across from gate 25. The sit down has a big menu. The walk up by gate 25 has the more popular favorites all cooked up on the spot. At the counter is a big selection of salads: garden, Greek and Greek with chicken + a bunch of wraps. My breakfast favorite is the Ham & Egger. A sesame toasted bagel with an egg, cheese and ham. Served all day long it is fantastic. Skip the Egg McMuffin down the street at McD and go for the Ham & Egger. The breakfast burrito is another favorite. It is offered on a regular flour tortilla or a low carb(wheat and high fiber) tortilla. I prefer the the low carb. Other than lunch, my 2 favorites are the Greek Salad that comes with a big chunk of fresh Feta; and the Hani Special which is a sandwich of grilled chicken tenderloins topped with Swiss & American cheese on a grilled pita with shredded lettuce & tomato

Dirty on a Monday afternoon(unswept floor, unwiped tables). Pleasant, fast service otherwise. Chicken noodle soup looked canned.

While in Detroit for the Michigan game I stayed at the Westin in the terminal, and imagine my jubilation when I learned that I could have a coney dog while there. I love authentic coney dogs. Going here was a highlight and the dog was yummmmmmmy. Outstanding service there, too, as the staff is incredibly friendly. I’ll be back in December for one night at the airport and will have dinner at NCI. :)

I hit up the National Coney Island Express in the Detroit Airport during an hour and a half layover and lemme tell you, it hit the spot! I was soo hungry and nothing looked good until I called my boyfriend to ask him where to go. He is a connoisseur of the food in Detroit’s airport after growing up in Michigan and told me to get the gyro and fries. After a long night of Live Band Karaōke in Chicago, this meal could not have been more perfect. Delicious spiced pita bread, good gyro meat and plentiful tomatoes and red onion slices. The taziki sauce wasn’t the best I have had and the fries were a little bland, but with a little salt and pepper, I was in hangover heaven. The meal cost about $ 8.50 which isn’t ridiculous for airport food. If I am ever going through the A terminal again in Detroit, I will be back National Coney Island Express…

This is probably the best place to stop for a local eating experience at Detroit Metro. Lunched here on a recent trip. Table service was fast and very friendly. The Coney dog was your basic chili dog with onions and mustard, and it was really good. The Coney burger was really interesting: ground beef, almost like taco meat, served in a hot dog bun and then treated like the Coney dog(chili, mustard, onions). Really good and really different from anything I’ve ever seen on a menu anywhere. I also had a hot fudge sundae, which is made with local ice cream and local hot fudge. Both were really good. The hot«fudge» was more like a brown sugar or caramel sauce, as it didn’t have a strong cocoa aspect, but it was awesome.

The bestest place to eat at Metro Airport. This is a great taste of Detroit and it’s always my last stop before I fly out — a final tasty goodbye, if you will. Someone asked what makes the coney sauce creamy. To that I would offer the following answers: 1. Questions like this are obviously bad to ask. 2. Not all coney sauce is this consistency — close, but not the same. 3. Fat. Yes, that’s right. National uses a lot of fat in their sauce, which gives it a distinctly decadent texture. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying. Fact is, this is one of the best coneys in the universe. This particular location loses a star only because of the jacked-up airport pricing, but that should not deter you from eating here.

You may not know this… but in upstate NY, hot dogs in this style are referred to, by some, as «Michigans». So, I figured, while in the state, I would have to try and experience as many of these tube steaks as I could reasonably digest. What luck to run into this establishment on my brief layovers. I tried both the regular coney and the coney special. And I tried both the express location as well as counter service on the non-hotel side of terminal A. I got the regular coney from the express, and ate it standing up. The special from the counter, and ate it sitting down. But now I realize the best option is to get the regular coney at the sit down location. These are solid dogs. Detroit style chili, naturally. Although I am still trying to figure out what makes Detroit chili so creamy. The bun at the sit down was steamed better. But perhaps my to-go dog was under-steamed as a courtesy. And the«special» which I thought would be Flint style chili was just disappointing. Really, I’d suggest hopping a flight to Grand Rapids and take a cab to Grand Coney. Sacrilege, I know. Nobody flies from Detroit to Grand Rapids. Or, so I’ve been told.

I’m on a layover in Detroit, my flight has just been delayed, and I’m hungry. Why go to a McDonald’s when I can go to a National Coney Island? Frankly(pun intended) I’ve no idea how«national» this chain of fast food places is, but hey, it’s a new place to eat. I ordered a Coney Island hot dog($ 3) which came with chili, mustard, and onions standard. For another dollar, they would have turned it into a heart-stopping meal by adding cheese and bacon on top.(I opted not to.) My cheery server brought out my pseudo-sammich moments after I asked for it — that’s fast food! I scarfed it down with the help of a large Vernors*. The Coney Island was good, but didn’t distinguish itself from any other hot dog. If trimmings alone make a Coney, steer clear from one unless you like chili on your dog, and a slightly soggy bun, as it’s a messy eat. * What’s Vernors? Imagine a stronger, darker ginger ale — Mirror Universe soda, if you will). It’s hard to get on the east coast, so I had to indulge.

Have you ever been stuck in an airport with nowhere to eat(i mean nowhere you could possibly want to eat). Well if you are lucky enough to be traveling through Detroit International Airport(in the NWA Terminal) you will find National Coney Island and the best hotdog and chili-cheese fries you will ever find in an airport(or possibly otherwise). It is the best possible food you could ask for if you have a half an hour to wait before traveling from one side of the country to the other.
