I was incredibly skeptical of the place to begin with. Since they claim to cook shanghai noodles, I ordered that to go. Nasty. Full of msg and oil. Was cheap and skimpy on the vegetables, barely had free strands of pork. Couldn’t get a basic dish down. Would not recommend.

We came for lunch special. We are illiterate to Chinese, and can on speak canto. We could only read English. On the menu English is under Chinese. We pointed at the English and the waitress only spoke Mandarin. When the receipt came out for our food we told them we wanted the other thing and the waitress kept arguing that we pointed at the wrong thing that it was our fault for pointing at the wrong thing. So we asked someone that spoke canto what happened and he was like she wrote it. she can change it. But she kept saying we pointed at the wrong thing, the manger had to tell her it’s fine to change it. Bad service. She could have told someone that could understand canto to take our order instead. That’s what I do where I work if I can’t speak Mandarin we find an employee that can to communicate with the customer.

I came with my family to dine at this restaurant a few times. I love their rice which fits its name perfectly. The servers were eager to serve and did check on us throughout our meals. However, I need to bring up two issues. The server and the manager were too eager to «sell» their dishes. When we tried to order, they kept telling us «other» dishes. I understand it is all about business. If the customers have their own menu in mind, please learn to back off! We visited the restaurant last month to celebrate a family member’s graduation from the middle school. We ordered steamed fish with ginger and scallion which is our nephew’s favorite. The server brought out a dish with different cooking style. When we questioned our request of steamed fish on the order, the server did not give us a straight answer or an apology! Instead he asked if we would just take the dish as is. Well, we have one less place to go or go less frequently!

Great xiao long bao, juicy, subtle, delicious. Very well made xiao long bao although the focus of the restaurant isn’t so. There are a variety of other foods but to me those are consistent in flavor and nothing special. I would go back here for the xiao long bao but wouldn’t crave much else otherwise. Great spot to try!

They changed their chef and the food was a big disappointment. Everything is salty and oily. I would not recommended to anyone!

This place is not worth the price! It is overpriced with very small portions. We ordered total 5 dishes, 2 tasted insipid, the others were too salty! Not recommend, never come back again!!!

Nice décor with nice looking teapots. Really love Shanghai dumplings so when I heard this I had to come and try. Well it was not as good as I expected. The Shanghai rice cake was cooked too soft for my taste. I like it a bit chewier. Flavor was ok. Definitely not much meat in it. Lots of cabbage. Shanghai dumpling had a lot of juice but the meat did not have the flavor or texture. It was grounded too much. Spicy wonton with meat and veggies was more peanut sauce than spicy.

As a northern Chinese, I was not a big fan Shanghai cuisine, but after I came here twice with a Shanghai friend, I realized that I might just have ordered wrong dishes or went to the wrong places. The pork belly is one of my favorite, tender and soft, melt in your mouth, their soup, either chicken soup or duck soup are very fresh and tasty, definitely a must for soup lovers. Oh and the babao duck just amazed me, we were already full before this arrived(you’d better order in advance, it will take 40 mins to make it), but we managed to finish it because it is so good! This place definitely has changed my stereotype about Shanghai food, a good food journey starts here.

I came here for a quick lunch with my brother. I’m a bit picky when it comes to shanghaiese food as both my parents are from Shanghai and are great cooks. But for the convenience, I’m always on a lookout for good food. I’ve heard some back ground story on the restaurant. It’s suppose to be really big in Shanghai and they are trying to expand here. They’ve brought over a few chefs to train in hope to have it replicate here. Popular dish: Xlb: It was well done as the skin is extremely thin and not mechanically prepped like dintaifeng. It contains a lot of soup and is not as sweet as most places. My top pick: Braised Pork(hong shao rou) known for the way they cook the pork belly where all the oil is cooked out of the skin. The skin melts in your mouth like jello. Their photos definitely look better than the actual dishes. Their lunch prices are fairly cheap even for the meat dishes. The portion is decent but my main concern was the amount of oil they use to cook. I ordered sautéed romaine hearts(known as A-Choy) and I was really disappointed. They didn’t clean the lettuce so I had bits of sand in eat bite. I also ordered the fried beef with mayo. I’ve had it at other places and they are light and tender. Here it was really oily and the beef was really hard to chew. Overall it’s a pretty authentic shanghainese restaurant. Stick with the popular dishes and you’ll be fine.

I heard some good reviews of this place but I was disappointed that it was not true. This location used to be the Sunday Café. Plenty of parking with not much wait for a Saturday night. They did a good job with the interior remodeling with the fixtures and decoration. The staff were quick and very friendly. They stopped by to check on us and did constantly refill our tea pot. I overall enjoyed the service and felt they were better than most Chinese restaurants. This place serves Shangheiese food for a very reasonable price. We ordered 7 dishes for $ 65 but portions were normal for the price. All the food just taste salty and the same. I wouldn’t say any dishes was cooked well enough for me to come back for more. would say some places serves café food than here. They will charge $ 1 per rice! I

This place use to be Sunday Bistro but guess they didn’t make it so this restaurant turned into Shanghai cuisine. Mom suggested this place because they are new and said they must be good cause they had a line out the door when they first opened. Maybe it went a little downhill since then because the food was just okay, the portions were pretty small and a tad expensive. Food: Ordered Drunken Chicken — cold and soaked in alcohol served in a round glass. the alcohol flavor was pretty strong so I didn’t like that much and the chicken pieces were more bones than meat. Shanghai rice cake — haven’t had this dish in ages, they made the flavor pretty good but didn’t have that much pork in it. Shredded pork with buns — this was pretty good dish — like peking duck with the buns but instead of duck they used pork. Chili wontons — was not very spicy, this dish is usually super spicy at other restaurants and the wonton skins here are too thick — not recommended if you had it at other places. Xiao Long Bao — not the best I have had… actually the skin was also too thick. The food was okay but the service was really good — the older lady waitress was very nice. I wouldn’t say I won’t come back here but it’s definitely not a preference.

My first time eating at Rice Yummy is one one of the busiest nights for a Chinese restaurant, the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival. My family made reservations early on so we arrived at 5:30 p.m., before the restaurant became super packed. We ordered the large course dinner priced at $ 288. And out of the dozen courses they presented, there wasn’t one I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. The food was really good! I always liked regional Shanghai tastes and food that isn’t oily, bland, or salty. The items with wine had a special kick to it! All the red meats are so damn tasty and the red bean sweet rice ball dessert was a great way to end the night. Service was excellent despite how busy the place was. Definitely will be a frequent customer here at Rice Yummy. :)

Came for lunch and got seated right away. Ordered wonton soup, fish bean sprouts sour soup, rice pot with ham and mustards, chicken wine, and steam dumplings. Overall food taste good and light. Would not order wonton soup again because it was tasteless. Price was reasonable. 5 dishes came out total around $ 47. Plenty of parking because next door to supermarket. Restaurant looks clean inside.

TL;DR: Save your time and money; Rice Yummy needs to join the other failures in the graveyard of the SGV. «Rice Yummy» is a misleading name; it should have been called«Raw Rice» because that’s what we basically had, rice that was undercooked that it took a hard deep swallow to digest it. Mother T. suggested this place because it was nearby and it was a brand new place that took over Sunday Café, which, through the grapevine of the Chinese community, closed down possibly due to lack of business and retreated back to a single branch. Heading in Rice Yummy, the place didn’t seem too bad for a «hole in a wall». Browsing the menu, I was in uncharged territories, as this place looks like it specializes in Shanghaiese cuisine. Ordering wasn’t too horrible, just a small detour of the Cantonese/Mandarin barrier. However, things kind of turned for the worse after that. — As more guests were coming in, one of the waiter yanked away my single sheet menu. Yes, you read correctly, yanked. Not asked if he could have it for another party, not asked if I was done with it because we have a limited amount of them. Just yanked it off my table. — Randomly, I noticed a piece of hair on my mother’s side of the table, and a lot of random flies coming from somewhere; couldn’t be the front door because it remained shut as people came in and out. It got to the point that Mother laughed when some older lady got up and swat one of the flies with the menu. — Also, I kept seeing people from the kitchen coming in and out to the dining area, including people who were just stepping in to start their shift. I would be okay with them coming in and out to grab something, or to talk to a waiter, but they were literally carrying their food and drinks to the dining area, which added to the unpleasant experience. As for the food: — Our sweet and sour pork came out a little TOO quickly. Like maybe a minute after placing the order into the kitchen. With that«speedy» service, the dish itself was pathetic; the piece of pork were over-fried to the point that the meat was dry and tough, the sweet and sour sauce had no «sour» notes to it, and the quantity of the dish was enough for one person to eat as an appetizer instead of an actual family dish. — The sesame noodle dish was probably one of the worse noodle dishes I have ever had. I had imagined that the dish would be a cold noodle dish with some julienne veggies and a strong presence of sesame. Instead, I got a pipping hot bowl of possible instant noodle, with very little vegetables and sauce that was so tasteless, I bet licking the tablecloth would have produced better taste than what I had. The dish was so bad that I couldn’t even finish half of the bowl and I started to notice that the noodles began to clump up. — The fried tofu dish was taking WAY too long; we had asked the waiter if the dish was coming out, and if it was, to put it to-go box, or cancel the order. Got home and ate it, it’s like someone tried to make something out of leftover meats and threw it in the fryer last minute. It’s probably just as bad as yellow mustard soup and baking powder cakes. — The«free rice» that came with our meal was undercooked. Mother T. was polite enough to tell the waiter about it. With that said and the service we received, the only«saving grace» was the last waiter who boxed up our items and gave us our check. He was probably the best and decent service we got from this place.

They’re a new business that opened, so I guess they have room for improvement. Honestly, I feel like this place is more so a 2-star than a 3-star restaurant, but since they are new, and I understand how hard it is to run a new business, I will just be a bit nice here and round up to a 3. Service is okay. Since it was pretty empty when I came(close to closing) the workers had a lot of free time to just chat with us. As for food, none of it was good. Shrimp was tiny, the noodles were way too crunchy, the sauce was bad, the xiao long bao dunplings were whatevers… Overall, didn’t really enjoy the food. They need to do a lot of improvement if they want to keep up with the other Asian restaurants in the area.

Its interesting. The service was all right, but the food especially the deep fried seaweed fish, had a very weird smell. Its obvious it wasn’t fresh. What saved my experience was their XLBs. Aside from that, meh.

We came here because we wanted to try a new place. Keep in mind that this is NOT a café in my opinion. We started off with 3 people and we ordered stir fried green beans, sweet and sour spare ribs, and soup along with chrysanthemum iced tea and lemon iced tea. The tea were all right. Then our sweet and sour spare ribs came out and i was shocked at the portion size. It was so little that it was so pitiful to look at. As Zoolander would say«What is this? A plate for Ants!!!» It was not even hot. So we waited for our string beans. Then 3 more of our friends came. They ordered a whole fish.(It was good) The fish came out before our string beans and soup! We waited forever for our string beans! The soup came and it was okay. We then had to ask about our string beans. We waited and FINALLY it came out. This place wasn’t even busy! And still service was slow. This place is not worth the price! It is overpriced with small portions. The only upside was that the waiters were nice and were doing their job. Overall, never coming back here. This place really need to start stepping up its game.

I know this restaurant is fairly new(they apparently opened 5 weeks ago), and they appear to be struggling hard, so I will try to be as gentle as I can here. First, I would like to praise the level of service here. The wait staff were unfailingly polite, as well as attentive about clearing our table of dirty dishes and refilling my tea. I also greatly appreciated that the bill was not brought to our table before we requested it. Admittedly, all this may have been motivated by the(apparent) owners lounging at the corner table near ours, but the fact remains that there was no deficiency in customer service at Rice Yummy during my visit. Also, the interior of the restaurant was conspicuously clean, and parking was not difficult to obtain. Menu prices seemed pretty affordable, overall. Where I must voice some concern is the palatability of the food, as it left something to be desired. The Fried Squid was apparently overcooked, as it was excessively chewy, and disappointing in texture. The Shanghainese Pork Mini Buns were thankfully better — not the best I’ve ever had, but still more competently executed than the squid was. The Chrysanthemum Tea was light and not very sweet, but still refreshing — and reasonably priced at a mere 99 cents(also, refills are apparently free). Also of concern is that the majority of the menu really did not seem very appetizing at all, to be honest. I wish the restaurant well, and I think they have the potential to improve their standing, if they can produce better looking\tasting dishes than what they currently offer. If that doesn’t happen … well, Phở Pasteur is still right down the strip mall.

Rice Yummy is unsatisfying and expensive, a disappointing replacement for the Sunday restaurant that used to be here. We ordered four dishes and two drinks. Most items on the menu were between $ 8 – 12. The pictures were very tantalizing and the menu was pretty, but there was a glaring disclaimer on every page: «Actual food may vary from picture.» And it was NOT kidding. The $ 12 braised fish turned out to be about 8 small charred pieces on a tiny unappetizing plate. We were pretty shocked. We didn’t start eating it yet because we waited for the rice to arrive, but when it didn’t, we decided to ask the waitress for it. That’s when we found out each bowl of rice was going to cost an additional $ 1 each. The fish itself was dry and hard. Definitely don’t recommend. The next dish that arrived was the fried bean curds, which again was presented on a small plate with barely any pieces. It looked decent to eat, but tasting it was a different experience – the curds broke apart and felt more mushy than necessary. Not tasty. Next was the stir fried squid. Presentation-wise, it looked the best. It’s too bad that the squid was tough and chewy(a sign that it was cooked for far too long). Finally was the chow mein. We didn’t expect much, and we were right. The noodles were hard and there was no meat at all. Well, actually, we just couldn’t spot it. The meat came in thin strips that just sat at the bottom of the oily-greasy plate. Seriously? And the iced lemon tea? I actually thought I was drinking water. Our first time here is our last. I truly hope that this new restaurant finds a way to turn itself around and QUICK before the boards are put up.
