Granite Hall was the highlight of summer vacations growing up. It seems like we went to the wharf for lobster every night and would inevitably end up driving home on Rt. 32 with a scoop of Gifford’s or a $ 1 bag of candy. As a kid, this was my favorite place in Maine, and when I turned 14 it was my first job! I worked at Granite Hall for 8 summers and can honestly say that the people who own and run the place are the nicest in the world. Round Pond/Pemaquid is DEFINITELY worth a day trip if you’re planning a vacation in Midcoast Maine. An easy trip from Boothbay/Damariscotta/Waldoboro. I would suggest a morning at Pemaquid lighthouse, checking out all the galleries, museum, and scenic views there. Then take Route 32 to Round Pond, driving slow to check out the lupins and more beautiful views. When you get to Round Pond, head down to the wharf for an outdoor lunch of lobster(BYOB, but you can get drinks at King Ro) — or Anchor Inn if you’re feeling fancy. Head up to Granite Hall and some neighboring shops(hours change depending on the season) for some dessert and shopping!

Stopped by with the whole family on our recent trip to Maine and it was as great as always! Great selection of «penny» candy and a ton of unique gifts. I’ve never partaken in the ice cream, but it seems to draw a big crowd in the evenings. I just love the old-time, small town feel of Round Pond and the Granite Hall Store! A must stop if you’re nearby!

Come for the penny candy but don’t forget to check out the handmade soaps, cards and kitchen stuff in the back — this is a GREAT store. If you have a cat, consider picking up one of Dr. Pussum’s catnip satchels, the cats I know go CRAZY for this stuff and the designs are really cute. Upstairs they have lots of antiques, books, blankets, hats and other handmade items, this is the perfect store to visit if you’re in town and want to take something back home to remember your trip by, or if you’re just hoping to satisfy your sweet tooth. The ice cream is pretty darn good too — I just can’t recommend a visit to Granite Hall Store enough, it’s the cherry on the top of the sundae that is the Maine coast.

This place is great. They’ve got candy for pennys, including gum that is a penny a piece. I remember back when I’d go out with friends and collect bottles on the shore and then return them at King Row and take the money to Granite Hall to get candy. This is the best Penny Candy store on earth and they also have ice-cream from Gifford’s that isn’t half bad. I love this place and can’t think of any reason not to love it, if you’re a kid, or just a kid at heart go in there and get some candy. They also have some great local and old-timey toys for sale and even sell certain candies by the pound.
